2 HEALTH AT THE HEART OF OUR CONCERNS Health plays a vital role in a country s economic and social development. As a socially responsible company, building the future together means taking care of the health of our co-workers, their families and local communities. Health is, more than ever, at the heart of our concerns. For almost 15 years, we have made health one of the pillars of our social policy by leading initiatives to combat AIDS and malaria. Today, non-communicable diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases, pose a new challenge for human health, particularly in Africa, where growth, which often brings urbanisation and sedentary lifestyles, goes hand- in-hand with less healthy ways of life. These diseases are primarily due to behavioural risk factors. Raising public awareness is therefore crucial, as is being able to benefit from early detection. To strengthen this awareness, we must act collectively, by engaging our stakeholders, by building partnerships and by actively contributing to public health policies. 3 A GLOBAL EMERGENCY FOR PUBLIC HEALTH Deaths percentage by non-communicable diseases categories 13% 27% 3% Source OMS, January 2015 Certain factors, such as ageing, rapid and unplanned urbanisation, and the globalisation of unhealthy lifestyles contribute to the increase in NCDs. 57% Cardiovascular diseases Cancers Chronic respiratory diseases Diabetes Africa has the highest prevalence of hypertension. It affects 46% of adults aged over 25. CVDs are the second leading cause of death in Africa, after malaria, but before AIDS. Africa 2030 By 2030, CVDs will be the leading cause of death in Africa. At least 80% of premature deaths from cardiovascular diseases (heart disease and strokes) could be prevented by reducing the four shared risk factors: Unhealthy diet Sedentary lifestyle/insufficient physical activity Misuse of alcohol Smoking The WHO report warns of the need to step up actions to combat the growing threat of cardiovascular diseases by preventing their associated risk factors, and by promoting healthy lifestyles. 4 CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES IN NIGERIA In Nigeria, non-communicable diseases are responsible for 24% of deaths.out of the 4 major Non Communicable diseases, Cardiovascular diseases alone account for a significant percentage of 7% of these deaths. According to professor Ngozi Ajuluchukwu, Professor of Medicine and Cardiologist in LUTH Infectious diseases like malaria and HIV-AIDS have an immediacy and urgency with easily noticeable consequences. The menace of cardiovascular diseases on the other hand could be hidden and silent for decades and explode with disastrous complications such as heart attack or heart failure the first three risk factors of cardiovascular diseases are: 1. Elevated blood pressure 2. Hypertension & 3. Elevated blood cholesterol and enlarged heart. Meanwhile, hypertension is the most prevalent risk factor causing approximately nine (9) million deaths annually and more than 50% of heart failures She further opined that Nigeria's case is further worsened by the role of NEPA and traffic jams that have kept people cooling off in drinking joints long after hours therefore contributing to toxic risk factor profile. 5 CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES IN NIGERIA Risk factors for these diseases in Nigeria include: Pathologies such as: Hypertension Diabetes, affects % of the Nigerian population Risk factors related to lifestyle, such as: Alcohol Non-balanced Daily use of tobacco Being overweight Insufficient physical activity Cardiologist and vice president, World Heart Federation, and President, Nigerian Heart Foundation, Dr. Kingsley Akinroye,...despite the increased awareness on hypertension, prevalence of the disease has continued to rise unabated Prevalence among Nigerians is between 25% - 40% depending on the area of location. Location here indicates whether it is an urban or rural environment; stress level, lifestyle peculiar to such location etc. By contributing to the awareness-raising and prevention in populations about major risk factors (hypertension, alcohol, unhealthy diet, overweight, smoking, insufficient physical inactivity), we can help reduce cardiovascular disease risks in the Nigerian population.
