Siddha medicine is one of the traditional system. It has been widely used in India particularly in Tamilnadu. It is one of the ancient system of medicines. This system includes medical therapy by using herbal mineral preparations and also the traditional procedures. This system needs research and evaluation. Diseases are classified into 4448 in siddha system of medicine. All over the world majority of the people now fall the victims for kidney stone problems. There is no specific medical treatment available for this problem. This paper deals with an attempt to newer modes of therapy to be made by using some of the herbals mentioned in siddha system of medicine which are available locally and however add significance to the cost of therapy. The present study reveals the positive role of siddha medicine in the treatment of renal and ureteric stones. Introduction During the last decade, use of traditional medicine has expanded globally and has gained popularity. It has only continued to be used for primary health of the poor in developing countries; conventional medicine is predominant in the national health care system (Murugesa, 1988; Mudaliar, 1936). Siddha medicine is one of the traditional system. It has been widely used in India particularly in Tamilnadu. It is one of the ancient system of medicines. This system includes medical therapy by using herbal mineral preparations and also the traditional procedures. This system needs research and evaluation. Diseases are classified into 4448 in siddha system of medicine. Renal diseases are one of the challenging problems of all medical system. Renal stone disease is one of the renal diseases. It is very painful and needs expensive medical or surgical treatment. The causes and the treatment for renal stone are not definite. This study will try to treat the renal stone disease using herbal preparations inexpensive (WHO, 2000; Somasundaram, 1997). *Corresponding author. address: dr.balasankar1969@gmail.com Background All over the world majority of the people now fall the victims for kidney stone problems. The aim of the present study is to assess the outcome of patients with renal stones treated by herbals. Methods All renal colic patients, who are USG proven to have renal stone disease had been treated with newer siddha protocol - valmilagu (Piper cubeba Linn, Family Piperaceae) powder 300mgs b.d dose with 350 ml of tender coconut. 200 mg o.d to be continued & Patham picin (Terminalia catapa 50mg/kg o.d for 5-7 Days as per the evidence of Siddha meteria medica. The patients who underwent Siddha Protocol and who had completed the outpatient treatment are met for follow up for at least one to sixty days at Balaji Scientific Siddha Clinic, Tirunelveli. 5 The patients were categorized into three groups based on their outcome namely, those of i). Stone free (treated group); ii). Residual stone (on treatment) and iii). Underwent URS (Surgical). The states of haematuria, renal function as well as complication of newer siddha therapy were noted. Results Patients had ureteric stone. The mean follow-up was for days. The median follow up of 7 days. Maximum 60 days. Minimum 24hrs. 41 patients satisfying all criteria were included in the study. 21 Had ureteric stone. The mean age was The male and female ratio is 33:8. All ureteric stone patients received newer protocol of siddha medicine Piper cubeba valmilagu with tender coconut & Patham picin 50mg/kgb/w.Pt achieved complete ureteric stone free. 19/21.No complications of therapy were noted during the course of study. 2 patients were advised for URS. The Urologist found that the urethra was compressed by the iliac vein below the stone. So on similar pathological conditions our siddha protocol may not be advisable. 27 Renal stone patients are under other protocol herbal preparation under another study. Conclusion The siddha treatment protocol is effective in renal stone problem especially urinary stones. In our series of 21 patients, 19 achieved stone free status i.e., 90.47%. (While 2 patients underwent ureteroscopy. size of the stone was 1cm, 7mm and 6mm) who being well tolerated and ensuring good compliance. The siddha protocol makes economy the corner stone of treatment of renal stone disease in our socio-economic status. In addition, the study also shows renal stone affect male more than female. Renal stone patients are in need of other protocol of siddha medicine.
