1 Latin Language course The main aim of the Latin language course is to form the fundamentals of terminological competence of health professionals capable of using medical terms of Greek and Latin origin both in English and Latin spelling while studying clinical disciplines as well as in practice and their research work. General learning outcomes Upon completion of this course, the students are supposed to know: the basics of Latin grammar sufficient for the usage of medical terms of Greek and Latin origin; grammatical and lexical word-building elements of anatomical, pharmaceutical and clinical terminology; characteristic features of terms used in anatomical, pharmaceutical and clinical terminology; at least Latin words and 120 combining forms; to be able to: pronounce and stress Latin words and word combinations correctly; understand and translate without a dictionary both from Latin into English and from English into Latin anatomical, pharmaceutical and clinical terms; use Latin grammar to the extent necessary to understand and build up medical terms as well as for prescription-writing; apply the received knowledge in practical setting. The Latin Language course content and structure The Latin language course is a two-semester course traditionally divided into three basic modules representing the main branches of present-day medical terminology: anatomical, pharmaceutical and clinical modules. Anatomical terminology medical professionals in the field of Latin anatomical terminology.

2 pronounce and stress anatomical terms correctly; know the elements of Latin grammar sufficient to understand and translate anatomical terms; know about words of basic anatomical terminology; be able to translate anatomical terms without a dictionary both from Latin into English and from English into Latin; understand the meaning and structure of English anatomical terms originated in Latin. Pharmaceutical terminology medical professionals in the field of Latin pharmaceutical terminology. know the basic concepts used in prescription-writing (pharmaceutical starting material, pharmaceutical drug, pharmaceutical dosage forms, etc.); know about words of basic pharmaceutical terminology including the names of pharmaceutical drugs, medicinal plants, pharmaceutical dosage forms and additional vocabulary; know the means of term formation used in pharmaceutical terminology; know about 50 basic common stems (structural components of pharmaceutical terminology with the standard spelling and common definition); know the structure and the basics of prescription; be able to translate the Latin part of prescription from English into Latin. Clinical terminology medical professionals in the field of Latin clinical terminology. know the means of term formation used in clinical terminology; know about 200 combining forms of Greek and Latin origin; be able to define clinical terms derived from Greek and Latin combining forms; be able to build up terms of a given meaning using combining forms of Greek origin.
