2 INTRODUCTION A B O U T A Y U R V E D A Ayurveda is a science; a philosophy use to maintain the health and equilibrium of body functions Cause of health and ill health, symptoms and signs of healthy person and disease, medicine to overcome the health problems related to the human being have been described in Ayurveda Usage of plant materials, minerals, animal products in pharmaceutical preparation are prominent in Ayurveda system 2

9 OBJECTIVE To Screening and exploring the use of spices as an ingredient in Ayurveda pharmaceuticals To evaluate their therapeutic value 9
10 MATERIALS AND METHODS Sri Lankan Ayurveda pharmacopeia volume 1 part 1, part 2, part 3 were summarized during the study The formulas of different types of Ayurveda pharmaceuticals such as Arishta & Asava (medicated wine), Kwatha ( decoctions), Thaila ( medicated oil), Kalka ( semi-solid preparations), Choorna (powder) were analyzed to study the majority use of spices in Ayurveda system The results were tabulated and graphically presented 10

27 CONCLUSION Ginger was the widely use spice in the Ayurveda formulae given in pharmacopeia Modaka and Bashma are the Ayurvedic pharmaceuticals that are having highest no. of spices in their formulae Results revealed that the need of experimental research to develop value added products using the Sri Lankan spices These studies will use full to expand export market of spices and get more foreign exchange by exporting new innovative value added herbal medicinal product of Sri Lankan spices 27
