John Scott, DOM and Lorena Monda, DOM G OLDEN FLOWER C H I N E S E H E R B S Our History Golden Flower Chinese Herbs was founded in 1990 by John Scott, DOM and Lorena Monda, DOM. With experience in a variety of healing modalities, John, a graduate of the acupuncture program at the Santa Fe College of Natural Medicine, began his practice of Oriental Medicine in He was one of the first acupuncturists to practice in Austin, Texas. Lorena brought a background in psychology to her practice of Oriental Medicine. A graduate of Southwest Acupuncture College in 1984, Lorena joined John in Austin in 1987, after practicing successfully for three years in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Chase Wind, Penetrate Bone was the first formula ever offered by Golden Flower Chinese Herbs. Since 1990, Golden Flower has expanded its line from five formulas to over one-hundred-twenty, including formulas created by well-respected practitioners like Andrew Ellis, Jake Paul Fratkin, and Cindy Micleu. Golden Flower s optimally-extracted formulas offer practitioners potent, high-quality, patent remedies that are free of impurities, and appropriate for a wide variety of symptom patterns. In the fall of 2000, we expanded our selection by offering topical products from Spring Wind Herb Company and concentrated Chinese herbal granules from Kaiser Pharmaceutical Company, Ltd. (KP). The most recent additions to our catalog include products from Golden Sunshine, Healthy & Natural by Sun Ten, Acutonics, Super Salve, Floracopeia, Stiper, and Alchemica Botanica.

KPC is a family-founded business like ours, offering superior quality, pharmaceutical-grade herbal products. The company is one of the most respected producers of concentrated Chinese herbs in the world, operating an award-winning, state-of-the art, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) facility in Tainan, Taiwan. Modern scientific processing methods and rigorous quality control set KPC Herbs apart from all other sources of Chinese herbs. We genuinely enjoy working with KPC, whose integrity and professionalism resonate with our commitment to good business relationships. Spring Wind topicals include a line of ointments, creams, salves, and liniments for external use with a variety of clinical applications. Each product has been used for generations by practitioners of Chinese herbology in Taiwan, People s Republic of China, and Hong Kong. Spring Wind topicals are made in the United States from carefully selected ingredients. Years ago, there was virtually no testing done on Chinese herbs and patent medicines. In 1989, I took a popular imported patent remedy for neck pain and realized that the effects I experienced were quite different than expected. We sent the pills to a lab for analysis and discovered that they contained Diazepam (Valium). It occurred to us that we needed greater accountability if we were to responsibly prescribe to our patients. We created Golden Flower Chinese Herbs to provide safe and effective herbs in a form easy for patients to take. ~ Lorena Monda, DOM Floracopeia Essential Oils provide the highest quality essential oils and aromatic treasures created by a network of distillers and producers who follow the principles of ecological agriculture and agro-forestry. Their artisan quality oils are a wonderful way to include this level of plant medicine into your practice. We are honored to be one of their few distributors! Needles and Acupuncture Supplies In 1994, we began carrying high-quality acupuncture needles and supplies to provide our customers with a one-stop shopping experience. Our catalog features TDP lamps and electro-acupuncture devices, sound healing forks, moxibustion products, cupping supplies, books, charts, and other tools of the trade. We also offer high-quality herbal washes by Yin Care, and herbal patches and skin care products by Golden Sunshine and Super Salve. Our selection of acupuncture needles includes Seirin, Tai-Chi, TeWa, and DBC. Golden Flower Chinese Herbs stocks everything a well-equipped Oriental Medical clinic needs!

Quality and Integrity Golden Flower Chinese Herbs offers an exceptional line of Chinese herbal formulas created by clinicians and manufactured with superior ingredients. We produced the first Golden Flower formula after we sent a popular patent remedy to a lab for testing and found that the formula had been adulterated with a powerful Western drug not listed on the label. As practitioners, we became concerned that we could not account for the herbs we prescribed to our patients if we did not know what was in them. We knew that other clinicians shared our interest in impeccably produced herbal formulas, and we wanted to make such formulas readily available to licensed professionals. In 1990, we created our company to meet a rising need for high quality, reasonably priced formulas without the impurities, adulterants, or questionable ingredients found in some herbal products. Purity We are committed to providing clinicians with products of uncompromising quality and purity. Golden Flower formulas use the highest quality raw materials. They are selected for freshness and verified to ensure that the correct genus, species, and part of the plant are used. We ensure that your patients are getting safe, correct, and effective herb formulas by employing advanced techniques in herb selection, identification, and processing. All of our formulas are tested for pesticide residues, microbial activity, and heavy metals. Our products exceed current international GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards. Under current regulations, companies are not required to list the percentage of each ingredient in their labeling. At Golden Flower, we feel that practitioners have the right to know exactly what they are prescribing to their patients. Therefore, we list our precise formulation percentages. Affordability At a time when insurance coverage and disposable income are more limited than ever, we endeavor to provide reasonably priced, high quality, herbal products to make Chinese herbal medicine available to as many patients as possible. Ease of Use Our optimally-concentrated formulations have been designed to be easily pulverized. By offering easy-to-take products, we hope to improve patient compliance with practitioner instructions, and aid your efforts to be as effective a practitioner as possible. Golden Flower Chinese Herbs

Our Commitment to You Adaptive Formulation As diseases evolve, so must our strategies to treat them. Many of our products are classical Chinese prescriptions. Others are versions of traditional preparations adapted to better serve the needs of modern, Western patients. In some cases, we have created new formulas based on traditional strategies to address modern complaints. New formulations go through a period of clinical testing in prototype before they are made available to you. Some of our formulas have been developed in response to practitioner needs and feedback. We always welcome your questions, comments, and suggestions. Your insights and case studies help us serve you and your patients better. Resources and Education We seek to expand the use of Chinese herbs by providing clear and useful information to practitioners. We offer real-time, professional consultations via telephone by licensed Doctors of Oriental Medicine during our regular business hours. Additionally, we host a variety of professional education seminars to benefit clinicians of varying skill levels and backgrounds. On our website you will find information about our seminars, educational videos, back issues of our newsletters, published papers on topics of interest, and monographs on many of our formulas. Advocacy and Community Support We believe it is important to help raise public awareness about the benefits of Oriental Medicine through advocacy and community support. We help you to help your patients reach their health goals, not only by offering superior products, but also the resources to effectively use them. Golden Flower supports future practitioners of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AOM) by providing student scholarships to numerous schools of Oriental Medicine. We support AOM professional associations and schools across the US. We are involved in many programs and organizations that work for the growth of our profession. Our founder, John Scott, DOM, has been an active member for years in the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM) and the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA). These organizations help to bring a practical and positive outcome to the development of regulations that affect access to Chinese herbs. We support herbal research and advocacy through our membership and activity in the American Botanical Council and the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia. Golden Flower donates to disaster relief efforts around the world and gives aid to a number of charitable causes.

Potency Golden Flower Chinese Herbs is convinced that the optimal extraction process used to create our products results in the most potent extraction available in the world today. It is not known which constituents of the herbs in a given formula result in a specific classical action. For example, we do not know precisely what constituent compound it is in bupleurum (chai hu) that releases the shaoyang level. In most cases, it is believed to be a synergy among various constituents in the plant part that result in its classical function. Because of the impossibility of scientific verification for TCM actions in any herbal formula, every manufacturer must settle for certain indicators of potency. The main test utilized in the industry is called High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), which can quantify the presence of pre-determined pharmacological constituents (active ingredients) in the final product. By substantiating the presence of active ingredients, HPLC is the primary scientific measure a manufacturer has to measure the quality of its extraction method. HPLC evaluation is used to create the standard for the broadest range possible of active constituent compounds available in our optimal extract process. Cost and Medicinal Value The potency of a formula is one indicator of medicinal value. To determine value, one must also consider quality and safety. Our primary motivation for founding Golden Flower Chinese Herbs was our concern for our family and our patients due to some of the undisclosed ingredients that were found in some products made by overseas suppliers. Due to market conditions and factors such as climate and weather, the cost of Chinese herbs has increased dramatically. We have found that the cost of laboratory testing has steadily increased too. Especially as the kinds of testing have broadened over the years. There has been a growing, justifiable concern about products exported from the People s Republic of China. You can benefit from the wisdom of Chinese herbal medicine safely and with confidence, without having to worry about questionable production practices. You already know that Golden Flower Chinese Herbs are of the highest quality, optimally-extracted, and safe. Appearance & Freshness You may notice that the appearance of our tablets may vary slightly from batch to batch. This is due to natural variations in color, texture, and aroma among our source herbs. Herbs vary from season to season and year to year like any other plant crop. Our buyers always endeavor to get us the very best herbs available for our formulas. Each bottle has a lot number for tracking purposes. To insure freshness, we try to keep our lot sizes small, and make each formula approximately once a year. The shelf life of our tablets is five years. Once a bottle is open, minimize its exposure to moisture, heat, and light to preserve its potency, and always store formulas in a cool, dry place.

The Truth About Concentration Ratios and Our Optimally-Extracted Formulas There is much confusion as to how concentration ratios are expressed and what they mean. First, let us discuss the common understanding and its shortcomings. Some manufacturers use a source-herb to finishedproduct ratio. For example, if 5 kg of herbs are used to make 1 kg of herb concentrate that would be considered a 5:1 concentrate. On first assessment, one would think that the higher the ratio the more potent the concentrate. However, an examination of the process used to concentrate herbs reveals that creating an effective concentrate relies on many more factors than just the amount of herbs placed in the extraction vat. In fact, there is an optimal amount of herbs in a given amount of water to get the best extract. If more than that is used it can result in a lower potency. The reason for this is that when herbs are decocted, certain ingredients are released quickly and others are released slowly. The timing of these releases are dependent on factors such as temperature, the nature of the solute (all water, part alcohol, etc.), and the herb being processed. For example, an herb that contains a large amount of starchy material (generally, material from between cells--intercellular) will release it into solution before most of the other constituents. This starchy material is very sticky and can block-up or seal-in the herb material that remains, thus making it more difficult for the intracellular (inside the cells) ingredients to enter into solution. If a smaller amount of herb is used, this obstruction will be minimized, hence a larger variety of ingredients can enter into solution. Also, if the ingredients that are quickly released into solution fill the available space in the solute (the liquid used for extraction), this supersaturates the solution leaving little room for the more slowly released ingredients. From this we can conclude that there is an ideal ratio of water-to-herb used to get a well-balanced and effective extract. Exceeding that amount of herbs may give a very high extraction ratio but a very poor extraction. Furthermore, the process, including cooking temperature, volume of solute, cooking time, and so on, can have a marked effect on the way certain ingredients are released into solution. Manipulation of these factors along with the optimum herb-to-solute ratio can lead to an herb extract that is unmatched. So, in fact a 3:1 ratio can produce a better extract than a 10:1 ratio. The optimum ratio is the one that derives the best mix of ingredients in the largest quantity possible. Our manufacturer is dedicated to producing the most effective extract possible with the technology that is currently available. They manipulate all the extraction factors and then measure for extraction effectiveness using HPLC detection for known ingredients. The process is tweaked until the best procedure and herb to solute ratio is ascertained and that becomes the SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for that product. Because each product has a different optimal herb extraction ratio, and because herb extraction ratios are inherently misleading, we simply refer to our products as optimally-extracted.

Quality Assurance and Manufacturing Procedures Beginning with the most advanced protocol for herb identification, the following is a description of the fivestep process guaranteeing that you and your patients receive the highest quality herbal tablets available. 1 Herb Selection and Identification The aristolochic acid controversy of the 1990s highlighted the need for accurate herb identification, and is a major concern for herbalists and manufacturers alike. Many aristolochic acid-related problems could have been avoided if the herbs in question had been properly identified before formulation. Our manufacturer instituted a sophisticated herb identification process in This identification protocol is constantly upgraded, and an on-staff botanist at the manufacturing site helps control quality and accuracy. KPC has obtained assurances from their suppliers that all of the raw materials (herbs) are free of genetically modified substances. Additionally, our in-house heavy metal standards are substantially stricter than the international standards. Some of the features of this industry-leading procedure include: Macroscopic inspection by experts to weed out commonly substituted herbs. Microscopic examination to ascertain species authenticity. TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography), a method of verifying herb species by checking the chemical fingerprint unique to each. Extraction Machine 2 Extraction After herbs have been properly identified, they are thoroughly cleaned and prepared for processing. They are picked through, washed, and agitated according to specific protocols for each herb. Once foreign materials have been meticulously removed, ingredients are assembled and cooked together in a vat called a rotary extractor. A continuous rotary motion thoroughly mixes the decotion liquid with strict control of the extraction temperature and timing. This unique extractor includes an essential oil retrieval system for which our manufacturer holds the patent. This retrieval system enables the vat to capture and preserve volatile oils, which are reintroduced later in the granulation phase. The oil retrieval system has been recently improved to preserve a greater quantity of volatile oils. When you open a bottle of Golden Flower herbs, you can easily perceive the freshness and strength of herbs prepared via this method.

3 Evaporation Once extraction is complete, a valve is opened in the rotary extractor and the decoction flows directly into a state-of-the-art, low-temperature, vacuum evaporationconcentration system. This low-temperature system prevents damage to potency caused by exposing herbs to high temperatures. Herb Preparation 4 Granulation and Tableting From the concentration chambers the herbs, now in the form of a viscous liquid, are piped into a flow coater. Still in a closed system, there is a 0% chance of crosscontamination as the flow coater (granulator) sprays the concentrate onto minute particles of base material and dries them to create concentrated granules. In the case of our formulas, the base material consists of powdered herbs from the ingredients of the formulas themselves. The granules are later precisely measured and pressed into smooth tablets for easy swallowing. Because of the makeup of the granules, a maximum of 2.5% of extra material is added to make a tablet. This is far less than most other herb tablets, which often contain up to 25% of flow-promoting and binding materials. This means more herbs in each Golden Flower Chinese Herbs tablet. 5 Laboratory Testing We send samples from each formula batch to a laboratory for a series of tests verifying potency and safety. These tests include: Microbial testing, to screen for E. coli, salmonella, and various bio-contaminants such as molds and yeasts. HPLC (High Pressure Liquid Chromatography), to measure potency by confirming the presence of active ingredients. ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry), is the future of non-organic (heavy metal) testing. ICP-MS is composed of an UPLC (pump), ICP (burner), and MS (detector). It is used to detect heavy metals. It breaks molecules into individual elements before they go into the MS detector. Other systems in use today are sensitive to subparts per million (ppm), but the ICP-MS can detect elements in the subparts per billion (ppb) range, and some elements in the subparts per trillion (ppt) range. ICP-MS technology is by far the most precise and sensitive available for heavy metal testing. Samples from every lot of our tablets are tested for heavy metals by ICP-MS. Granulation Machine

MS/MS is used to detect marker compounds, pesticides and other toxic chemicals. MS/MS is composed of an UPLC (pump) and MS/MS (detector). GC (Gas Chromatography), to ensure safety by checking for the presence of over 200 potentially harmful substances such as pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. The issue of pesticide contamination has always been a great concern to us. Pesticide residues may be found when pesticides are used to safeguard from crop failures, which in turn protects the farmer s main source of livelihood. It is also known that passive/indirect contamination from air, water, and soil can also result in detectable levels of pesticide residue in herbs. A Word From Our Manufacturer, KP As the number one herbal products exporter in Taiwan and an internationally recognized company, KP understands that our reputation as a company resides in the safety of our products. For this reason, we take great seriousness in insuring the compliance of our products to the standards of various international regulating bodies. We achieve this by establishing a system of pesticide monitoring, via consistent screening of incoming raw material through the use of advanced instruments and equipment such as ICP-MS, GC-MS/MS, and LC-MS/ MS at two in-house ISO certified laboratories. As a result, only the cleanest herbal materials available are accepted into our inventory for production. Futhermore, pesticide levels are monitored continuously throughout the production cycle. Based on the data collected from our test results, we are able to ascertain that the majority of Chinese herbs present no risk of contamination; this allows us to focus our efforts on select groups of herbs that are known to be of higher risk. Concentration Machine Due to the differences in various international regulations set by governments of individual countries or regions, there is no single solution that can cover all bases. Therefore, we conform to multiple regulating bodies and sources, such as USP, BP and EP, PRCP, and ROCP standards. For pesticide regulation, we allocate our in-house resources to adapt to the European Pharmacopeia (EP), which is comprised of the most comprehensive and stringent pesticide regulations currently available. Finally, our finished products are regularly tested by third-party independent laboratories to ensure consistent and trustworthy results. With this system in place, we are able to make certain that the quality and safety of our products is uncompromised. For over 30 years, I have been involved in efforts to bring legal status and increased recognition to the field of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. As we come more and more into the public eye, the importance of integrity and purity in manufacturing Chinese herbal products cannot be stressed enough. At Golden Flower, we are committed to making AOM a well-respected and readily available resource over the years to come. ~ John Scott, DOM
