1 Benefits of Using Incense for Rituals Incense has been used for many centuries in most cultures and religions for a range of purposes but mainly for healing and sacred rituals. The burning of woods, herbs, spices and plants not only give off a beautiful scent but also heighten the senses which in turn help the body, mind and soul. In ancient times these were considered to be gifts from the Gods so were used in daily practises and rituals. The burning of these all had different purposes and special blends were made to fit specifically to their needs; cleaning, purifying and preparing temples, homes and themselves to name a few. Today the burning of incense is still widely used due to its benefits. Not only is it a magical and powerful tool but it is also very practical.
2 Incense Uses and Benefits From ancient times to present day the uses of incense have always been beneficial to all involved. The most common uses and benefits include: Smudging, meditation, spells Cleansing and purifying rituals To raise energy or to change the energy of a space including when cleansing and purifying To aid meditation as it helps to clarify, focus and calm as well as elevating a meditative state Can be used to represent the elements of fire, earth and air Aids astral projection and promotes lucid dreaming Connections with deities (using incense linking to the specific deity helps to connect with the deity) Creates a relaxed and peaceful ambiance Encourages people to release emotions, to unwind and to connect deeper on a spiritual level Can be used in rituals for bringing good luck, wealth, love, abundance and good health The Benefits of using incense is primarily to set the tone for the ritual. For the participant(s) it enables the body, mind and soul to connect and opens and prepares for the spiritual practises as well as everyday life. As well as the above benefits it also has been proven to increase concentration, motivation and creativity. Incense also lowers the heart rate and sooth anxious feelings thus leading to less tension and relieving depression.
3 Types of Incense Incense can come in different forms and although they are all very effective some forms will be more practical depending on what the ritual is e.g. an incense stick may be appropriate for meditation whereas a smudge stick is more appropriate for cleansing and purifying. Types of incense include: Natural incenses made up of natural dried wood, resin or herb pieces Granular resin which is burnt on hot charcoal Compounded incense include incenses sticks (or joss sticks), incense cones etc. they are made up of natural wood, resins and herbs with the addition of natural essential oils Popular Incenses used in Rituals The term ritual can refer to any practise completed either individually or as part of a collective group and can include simple daily rituals such as prayer and meditation or more complex rituals such as smudging, anointing and cleansing. Different incenses will have a different effect too, so it is important to keep this in mind when choosing an incense for a specific purpose. Frankincense Frankincense has been used for centuries and can be found having links to ancient Egyptian times. Its beneficial uses throughout the ages have included being used for washing, hygiene purposes such as mouthwash, natural repellent against mosquitos and protecting clothing by placing the items over the smoke of burning Frankincense. Today many cultures burn Frankincense for rituals as it has many benefits as well as having a very beautiful, sweet aroma.
4 Frankincense comes from the Boswellia trees which are slashed and bleed out. It hardens into a resin of Frankincense. It has been used for centuries and is considered to be a Holy incense. It is very popular for worship and spiritual work. Benefits of Using Frankincense Inhaling burning Frankincense enhances calm, relaxing and peaceful feelings Promotes positive thinking and dispels negativity Cleanses and opens the mind to greater intuition (which also connects us to divinity) Frankincense in its purest form (resin) is best to use as it is more effective. Myrrh Myrrh is very similar to Frankincense in terms of its uses and history. Myrrh was used to anoint bodies and was classed as an important incense for spiritual work. Both Myrrh and Frankincense have been used for healing purposes throughout the ages. It comes from the same family of trees as Frankincense called the Commiphora Myrrha. Both Frankincense and Myrrh are mentioned in the Bible and were just as important in ancient Egyptian times. Benefits of Using Myrrh Purifies the area and used to raise the vibration so is very useful when meditating Very peaceful but it is often burnt with other resins such as Frankincense Used to bless objects and sacred areas Enhances spirituality and meditation Helps to expand wisdom Brings comfort and helps with the grieving process
5 Sage The herb sage is the most common and ancient incense used to smudge a person or a space as it has magical cleansing and purifying qualities. It also has medicinal and healing benefits when burnt. White sage is considered to be very sacred and has been used for centuries for its qualities, especially for protection. Native Americans began the tradition of using sage to ward off evil spirits. White sage was a popular herb used in traditional ceremonies and rituals as it was believed to bring blessings of good health, prosperity and protection. Benefits of Using Sage Healing properties the name sage comes from the word salvia which means to heal Increase spiritual awareness Gives wisdom and protection Clears negativity and other energies from daily activities Purifies the object (such as crystals), person or space when used in the smudging ritual Enhances intuition Sandalwood Sandalwood is an ancient wood used over centuries due to its calming affects. Not only does it calm the mind but also helps to open the third eye. Many ancient magical tools have been made from sandalwood too such as staffs. The Sandal tree is called Santalum Album and when matured, it reaches up to 15 metres. The ancient Egyptians used it in medicine and rituals. In Buddhist traditions it is still classed as one of their sacred incenses still used today. Sandalwood was believed to help depression and anxiety. Many religions and cultures believed Sandalwood to promote peace, spiritual practise and found it to be grounding. It was used to comfort those dealing with death of a loved one as well as believing it helped with spirits to move on. It has a woody yet sweet aroma. Sandalwood oil is slightly more expensive but incense sticks work just as effectively.
