A Perfect Partnership Inter Valley members and Claremont residents Sonja Stump (age 68) and Bob Fagg (age 70) have been married for 39 years, and dated for seven years before that. We wanted to make sure it would be a good one, Sonja jokes. The couple was introduced by Bob s mother. My mom knew that she was an outstanding lady, he says. She makes me look way better than I actually am in real life, and isn t that what a good spouse is? Someone who builds you up, he says with his trademark grin. Partners in Crime Sonja is a professional photogra pher and owner of Sonja Stump Photography for 42 years, located in Claremont s Village for the past 39 years. Bob works with her in the studio. He would say he drives the getaway car, Sonja jokes. He does a Filled backpacks ready to donate variety of things, but his real love is interacting with all their clients. It s one of his favorite things in life. Sonja says, It s like the guy doesn t know a stranger. I love to talk to people and have engagement with community members, agrees Bob. When friends tease Sonja good-naturedly about the amount of time she and Bob spend together, Sonja replies with obvious affection, We re best friends. A Calling to Give Back The couple is passionate about volunteering and giving back to the community. Sonja attributes this to their faith. Part of my calling is to be a positive force in the world, she says. Volunteering is a way to do that, a way to give back. They both volunteer with the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center Auxiliary. With prompting from Sonja, Bob modestly admits that he has been named Volunteer of the Year by the Hospital and has received the President s Award. We both feel strongly about giving back in whatever way we can, he says. As part of the organization, Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, Sonja donates her photography services to take hospital memory photos of grieving families that have lost newborns. The loss is a very emotional experience for everyone involved. God gives me the strength to get through it, she says. She also volunteers on the board for Anthesis (formerly Pomona Valley Workshop), a program that places mentally disabled adults in jobs. 2

Anthesis (formerly Pomona Valley Workshop), a program that places mentally disabled adults in jobs FIND A KIWANIS CLUB NEAR YOU Get involved! Volunteer your time and talents. Service is at the heart of every Kiwanis International club, no matter where in the world it s located. Kiwanis members stage nearly 150,000 service projects, devote more than 6 million hours of service and raise nearly $100 million every year for communities, families and projects. Contact a local Kiwanis club in your area. locator.kiwanis.org Anthesis is another organization that Sonja feels very passionately about. They love being able to do something worthwhile, she says. We all need to feel needed. In the past, Sonja also served on the Board of Directors for the Claremont chapter of the Red Cross, for the Claremont Community Foundation, and for Claremont Heritage, and was President of the Claremont Chamber of Commerce. Bob is a member of the Claremont Kiwanis Club, which raises money to give back to the community. He has been involved with the club for 27 years now. Twenty-seven years of fun, he says with a grin. In addition to fund raising, the Kiwanis Club also sponsors the Read Me program, which organizes readings and book giveaways for underprivileged children. The two of them are also involved with the non-profit organization, Shoes That Fit, which provides shoes for children in need. The organization supplies them with empty backpacks, each containing a child s name, shoe size and a list of suggested school supplies. Along with the other Claremont businesses, Sonja and Bob display the empty backpacks at their photography studio and encourage their clients to take and fill the backpacks and then bring them back for donation. It s such a fun thing to do, Sonja says. It s really neat to see how excited the kids are. (continued on page 4) 3

A perfect partnership continued To top it all off, they even volunteer at polling stations during elections. As people of faith, Bob says, we need to be out there doing good things in our community. A Sense of Community We ve always been engaged in whatever group we ve been in, says Bob. They were involved in Parent Faculty Association when their two daughters, Rachel and Gretchen, were still in school. And they are involved in their church. The couple also volunteers on the 4th of July Committee for the city of Claremont, a group of Claremont residents that help organize and plan the city s Independence Day celebration. There s something about our town. Sonja says. We have a lot of citizen involvement. It s one of the things that makes Claremont a special place to live and raise a family. As business owners, they are also a part of the Claremont Village Marketing Group, an association of the merchants in downtown Claremont. The Group sponsors many fun activities that includes a downtown Halloween trick or treat. One of the town s trademark events is their Annual Wine Walk. In their down time, the couple enjoys spending time and going to movies together, and Sonja is an avid reader, particularly historical fiction. Bob also enjoys walking, sometimes walking as many as 8 miles each day. Bob has lost 68 pounds so far! He is a regular sight on the streets of Claremont wearing his trademark straw hat. I m known in my community for my big straw hat, he laughs. People will recognize my hat before they even see my face. The secret to their amazing partnership is likely their strong friendship. You can hear the affection in their voices when they speak of and to each other. There s always challenges, Bob begins. But we always have fun, Sonja finishes with a lighthearted laugh. SHOES THAT FIT ORGANIZATION What began in Claremont, California as the vision of one person, has turned into the largest national organization of its kind. Shoes That Fit tackles one of the most visible signs of poverty in America by giving children in need new athletic shoes to attend school with dignity and joy, prepared to learn, play and thrive. Today, 1.7 million pairs of new shoes and other necessities have been raised and distributed and we re not done. Most importantly, we help kids improve their self-esteem and participation at school by eliminating one of poverty s most visible and debilitating marks. 5 Managing a Mold Allergy The higher than normal rainfall we ve received and the constant tropical storms in recent months has increased our humidity which means more mold. Mold spores (tiny particles of mold) can cause mold allergy symptoms, including: Runny nose Eye irritation Sneezing Nasal congestion Throat irritation Coughing and wheezing If you have asthma, mold can trigger your symptoms. Reduce Your Mold Exposure Take simple steps to limit your mold exposure so you can avoid annoying mold allergy symptoms. Be careful when doing yard work. Mold spores are likely to be lurking in damp spots in your yard, so wear a dust mask when you re gardening, mow ing the lawn, or doing other work in the yard. Clean your surfaces. If you see mold on your bathroom tile or tub, or any other hard surfaces in your home, clean it and pay attention to that area in the future so the mold doesn t come back. Keep your air dry. By running your air conditioning or using a dehumidifier, you can reduce the moisture in the air in your home, which makes it harder for mold to grow. Bathrooms are especially prone to dampness, so keeping your bathroom window open or running the fan can help. Filter your air. Replace your air conditioning filters with a HEPA filter that is designed to trap tiny particles, including mold spores. Keep moisture away from your house. If rainwater or water from sprinklers tends to settle around the foundation of your house, look into landscaping options to ensure that water drains away from your house as quickly as possible. Get help if needed. If you spot mold on your drywall or ceiling, you might want to consider professional mold removal services. If your air conditioning unit is older, have your maintenance person inspect it to make sure there isn t mold growing inside. Treat Your Allergy Symptoms If you do find yourself experiencing allergy symptoms, whether from mold exposure or pollen: You might find relief from an over-the-counter anti-histamine. Talk to your doctor if it s an ongoing problem. MOLD REMOVAL CLEANING TIPS An easy way to clean mold on a hard surface is with undiluted white distilled vinegar; spray it, let it sit for an hour, then wipe the area clean with water. Or, you could use a bleach solution, a store-bought household cleaner, or regular soap and water. You might want to wear a dust mask while cleaning to avoid breathing in mold spores. 5

Learn to Prevent or Delay Diabetes with 6 Half of all adults over 65 now have prediabetes, and if you re one of them, that means you re at a higher risk for developing diabetes, which is linked with complications including blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, and amputations. The good news is it s possible to reverse prediabetes but only if you change your lifestyle, starting now! An easy way to start is coming to Inter Valley Health Plan s I m In Control! program, a prediabetes class that meets once a week for a total of 16 sessions. Participants in I m In Control! have: Lost weight and learned to reduce portions without feeling deprived Improved their blood sugar control, in some cases reversing pre-diabetes Learned about the best exercises and habits for reducing diabetes risk The classes are held at Inter Valley s Medicare Information & Vitality Centers. Classes are now forming at the Victorville, Riverside, Claremont and Pomona locations. For more information, call Sylvia Rosales, LVN, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, , ext 448. Life-Changing Experiences Member Robin Ring thought her lifestyle was healthy she was on a healthy meal plan and staying active with tennis, weight lifting, and aerobics. So, she was surprised when her doctor told her she had pre-diabetes. After the initial shock, she knew she wanted to take action. So, she enrolled in the I m in Control pre-diabetes class, and later joined a circuit training exercise class. Robin Ring

Our Free Program AN EARLY WARNING: Nine out of ten people with pre-diabetes don t know that they have it! Are you one of them? Find out now if you have pre-diabetes so you can know if you should be taking steps to protect your health. Ask your doctor if you can get an A1C test (a very quick and simple blood test), to check the amount of sugar in your blood. The American Diabetes Association classifies an A1C result of under 5.7% as normal; 5.7 and above as pre-diabetes; and 6.5 and above as diabetes. Ring raves about how her life has changed in a little over a year: she s dropped 15 pounds, improved her strength and balance, and can even do some of her old gymnastics moves. Best of all, she no longer has pre-diabetes. Robin has also been blown away by the experiences of a friend who had been struggling with many health problems, was very out of shape, and was deeply depressed. After joining the program, her friend lost 22 pounds, no longer needs her oxygen tank, and is blazing through circuit training. She loves her new life. Robin gets choked up when she reflects on these journeys. This is a life-changing program, she says. Have You Finished all of Your Annual Vaccines, Screenings and Exams for 2017? Start the New Year off with good health! It is important to be an active participant in your own health and wellness. As we get older we run the risk for developing common conditions such as high blood pressure and heart disease, diabetes and cancer. One of best ways to avoid these conditions is annual screenings that at the very least detect the early development of these conditions. As we age, the immune system can get weakened so annual vaccinations, such as the flu shot, are a must. With so many different strands of flu viruses entering the country each year the best thing is to be proactive and get the flu shot. Make an appointment with your doctor to review your annual screenings, vaccines and exams you might be missing. Before your visit concludes, ask questions and schedule any follow up appointments as necessary. 7

Feel Better: With Management of Congestive Heart Failure (HF) is a progressive and chronic disease but, with proper treatment and lifestyle changes, you can continue to live a vital and rewarding life. Heart failure can be managed when you take a very active role in managing your condition. With the right health care team in place, the right combination of medications and the right changes in lifestyle, many of today s patients with heart failure can enjoy healthier, happier and longer lives than ever before. It is important to keep in mind that your medications play an important role in the treatment of heart failure. Research shows that HF medications can stabilize the function of your heart, slow down the progression of heart failure and even improve heart function. It is important to understand that these medications take time to go into effect and so you might not notice a difference right away. As with any health improvement, the outcome depends a great deal on what you can do regularly. Here are some areas where you can make a difference in your health and how you feel! Get informed. Develop a good understanding of your condition and be certain that you know exactly what you need to do to take proper care of yourself at home. Ask your health care provider and members of your health care team specific questions. Your health care team s goals are to help you understand your condition and support you in planning for future care and responsibilities. Stay active. If you are able, and only on the advice of your health care provider, you should plan to exercise. Try to have a routine of set times during the day for exercise. Research has shown that exercise may decrease symptoms and improve your quality of life. Understand your prescriptions and treatment plan. Know the type, amount and frequency of your medication. Do not stop or change a medication unless your physician directs you to. Stop using tobacco yes, even vaping and cut back on drinking alcohol to a minimum. Sodium restriction. The recommended amount of sodium for HF patients is 2,000 milligrams daily. Avoid adding table salt or sea salt to food or cooking only one teaspoon of salt has 2,300 milligrams of sodium more than the daily allowance. Try using spice, fresh or dried herbs to add flavor to your food, or try a salt substitute. Have Questions about Prescription Coverage? Visit us online for the most up-to-date list of covered medications at ivhp.com/ PrescriptionDrugSearch, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Or call our Pharmacy Contact Center at , Monday through Friday. 11 Congestive Heart Failure (HF) Record your weight every day. If your weight increases by more than two pounds in 24 hours or increases by three to four pounds in two days, this could be a sign that your doctor may need to adjust your medications. Speak up. Follow your health care provider s HF management plan and communi cate. Speak up if you have any questions or changes in your condition. If you experience discomfort or an unusual symptom, contact your health care provider. Keep your scheduled appointments with your health care provider. Your health care provider wants to help you do as well as possible but needs to be informed how you are doing to provide quality care. To learn more about what HF is, the symptoms and how to manage the symptoms visit the American Heart Association s website at heart.org/heartorg/conditions.
