Lion Harold was a member of the Apollo Area Club for over 35 years and had served the club in many capacities over those years, including President 5 times. In 2015 Lion Harold was honored with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for service in Lionism. Lion Harold was always willing to volunteer to do anything for the good of the club and his community. In the past few years, Lion Harold chaired and helped on many committees. He was our eyeglass chair and would do the intake of clients for eyeglasses for the club, he also organized the blood clinic twice a year, and even did the road cleanup (one year by himself). The club held a memorial service for Lion Harold on Sunday October 23 rd at Curran s. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones. Lion Harold will surely be missed. 2 Page 2 White Cane Day The Lion Fountain Update We are still taking orders for bricks for the fountain. If you can think of someone who would like to have a brick for a loved one or just to commemorate something or someone, please have them get a copy of the form. Christmas Train Raffle On October 7 th, we held two White Cane Day events. At Held s Shop n Save we collected almost $300 and at the Apollo-Ridge football game we collected a little over $200. The Apollo Area Lions Club would like to thank all who donated to our sight fund. This year we are raffling off a Lionel Pennsylvania Keystone Special Train Set and as a Bonus the winner will get a Pittsburgh Trolley. As in the past, the tickets are $2.00 each and the winner will be chosen on December 21 st from the Lions can pick up their tickets from PDG Tom or at the Hoagie Shop. Membership News All Lions should be recruiting for new members. We need to keep our numbers growing so we can do more for our communities. Pick up a membership application and try to get someone to come to a project or a meeting to see what we are all about. Our job is to serve our community and our world, so that should be the approach. Find people who want to make their community better. Veterans Dinner Plans are continuing for the November 13 th Veterans dinner. We are looking forward to honoring many veterans from the Apollo Area.

3 Page 3 The Fall Rally The Apollo Area Lions were well represented at the Fall Rally. We had eleven members of our club in attendance. Everyone had a great time and it was a pleasure to see many fellow Lions from District 14N. We have a Spring Rally to look forward to in April. This will be held at Camp Kon-O-Kwee. If you have never been there it is a beautiful place to meet. We need to keep our streak alive of being well represented at rallys. Apple Dumpling Sale We are again selling apple dumplings as a fundraiser. Lion Marge Kaminski is chairman. Sheets were passed out at the October 24 th meeting. If you did not get a sheet, see Lion Marge. All orders must be returned to Lion marge at the November 14 th meeting. The apple dumplings will be delivered on November 21 st. They can be picked up at the Hoagie Shop that day. As in the past the price is only $3.50 each. They will make a great dessert for Thanksgiving. They freeze well, so order extras for those cold winter nights. Heat one up and eat it at your convenience. Mmmm, Mmmm, Good! Installation of New Members Lion John Kautz and PDG Toland held an installation service for three new members on October 10 th. We used the display which was originally made by Lion Howard Fulton. Since it was in disrepair, PDG Toland took some time and money and refurbished it with new paint and new signs. This service was used extensively throughout the area for installing new members. Clubs would call and have Lion Fulton and Lion Kautz travel to these clubs to perform the service. It was very well received. We are now able to offer that service again. The new Lions who were installed were Lion Leigh Anne Wenckowski sponsored by her mother Lion Sue Wenckowski, Lion Joe Ott sponsored by Lion Jessi Casella, and Lion Cindy Boehke sponsored by PDG Tom Toland.

4 Page 4 Zone Meeting Zone Chairpersons Gaylene Toland and PDG Evan Punchard held a Zone meeting at the Apollo #3 Fire Hall on October 24 th. Many items were discussed including the International Convention as well as the State Convention. All members were invited to the Cabinet meeting in Butler on November 12 th. Lion Gaylene discussed the Spot Cameras and the new information we can get from them. There were only four clubs from Armstrong County represented at this meeting. Upcoming Projects and Events Dinner with the Fire Department on November 6 th. This will be from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm. The Veterans Dinner will be held on November 13 th at the #3 Fire Hall. It will begin at 4:00 pm. Meeting dates this month are November 14 th and November 28 th. Train raffle tickets are available. See PDG Tom Toland to get yours to sell. The train set this year is a Pennsylvania Keystone Special. There is a bonus of a Pittsburgh Trolley car. Tickets are $2 each and the raffle goes off on December 21 st. The Lions International Convention will be held from June 30 th to July 4 th in Chicago. The District will be sponsoring a bus to the convention. Rooms in the PA Hotel will run $156 per night. This is a great opportunity to see an International Convention and to celebrate 100 years of Lionism. Registration Fee through January 13, 2017 is US$130 From January 14 through March 31, 2017 the regular registration fee is US$180, April 1, 2017 through onsite registration, the fee is US$200. If you want to become a member of the largest service organization in the world, see any Lion member and ask him or her how easy it is. Do you like helping others? Are you community minded? 5 Page 5 District 14-N Li l Ivy Jug Project Do you know why and how the Li l Ivy Jug project got started? In the fall of 1973, District 14-N Governor, Melvin W. Dutch Blair, was making his club visitation to the Baden Lions Club. In his speech to the club, DG Blair urged the Baden Lions, like he did the other clubs, to make an additional donation to eye research. DG Dutch felt that the only way we were going to find cures for the various types of blindness was through research. After the meeting, DG Blair, Baden s King Lion Clement Marmagin IV and several interested Lions were brainstorming ways in which District 14-N could raise additional monies for the Pennsylvania Lions Sight Conservation and Eye Research Foundation (PLSC&ERF). After a vigorous exchange of ideas, it was decided that the Lions and Lioness Clubs of District 14-N would pass a jug around at each of their meetings for Lions and Lioness to deposit their spare change. In naming this new project, DG Dutch and the Baden Lions injected a little humor into the process. They decided on the Ivy portion because of their King Lion s moniker, IV. They came up with the word Li l because King Lion Marmagin was a large man. Hence, the Li l Ivy Jug program was born. Over the past 43 years, District 14-N has raised nearly $100,000 for the Pennsylvania Lions Sight Conservation and Eye Research Foundation. That figure is above and beyond the monies raised through the District 14-N Projects for the PLSC&ERF. How Can Clubs Participate? Initially, all clubs in District 14-N participated in the Li l Ivy Project. As of last year we had less than 50% of our Lions and Lioness clubs participating. If your club is not participating, it should be. How can a club become involved in this worthwhile project? It s easy!! First, at the beginning of each Lions year, the incoming King Lion should appoint a Li l Ivy Jug Committee consisting of a chairman and several members. This committee is responsible for bringing the Li l Ivy Jug to each meeting and seeing that it is passed around to each member. Participation is voluntary. After the jug has made its rounds, a member of the committee should count the money and turn it over to the club treasurer. The Li l Ivy Jug does not have to be fancy. Many clubs use a coffee can with a slot cut into its plastic lid or a plastic milk jug with a slot cut in the top. It is suggested that something be placed on the outside of the jug explaining that the proceeds go to eye research. How To Report Funds District 14-N asks that each club treasurer issue two checks a year to cover the donations its members made to the Li l Ivy Jug Project. Checks should be made payable to District 14-N with the words Li l Ivy Jug written on the memo line. Checks should be mailed in the months of November and May to the District-N Cabinet Secretary: Michael G. 6 Page 6 Individual Leo and Lions Club Member Awards Leos of the Year Award - A multiple district council of governors or single district (that is not part of a multiple district) may nominate one high achieving Leo each year for this medallion and certificate award. Applications must be submitted by April 1. Congratulations to all the current award recipients! 100% Leo Club President Award - A Leo club president who meets specific requirements during his/her year in office may be awarded this certificate by the Leo club advisor with the approval of the sponsoring Lions club president. Award criteria categories include leadership development, membership extension, administration and Leo club activities. Certificates are sent to sponsoring Lions club presidents in April. Leo October Membership Growth Award - Leo club advisors may present this award to any Leo who recruits three or more new members during the month of October. To obtain this award, Leo club advisors must submit the nomination form by November 15. Congratulations to all current award recipients! Leo Award of Honor - Leos may choose to nominate a Leo member for this award to recognize outstanding accomplishments during the year. The lapel medal can be purchased from Club Supplies. Leo Completion of Service Certificate - This certificate recognizes a Leo's service to the club and community. Leo Advisors are encouraged to present the certificate to Leos graduating out of the program. Former Leos who choose to become Lions should also submit the Leo to Lion Certification form to waive the entrance fee, receive a discount on dues, and have their Leo years of service added to their Lion record. Continue making an impact and Become a Lion today. Leo Club Advisor Outstanding Service Award - The sponsoring Lions club president may present this award to Leo club advisors who meet specific requirements and demonstrate outstanding service in guiding and developing their Leo clubs. Certificates are sent to sponsoring Lions club presidents in February. Leo Club Motto Leadership Develop skills as a project organizer, time manager and team leader.
