1 Business Name November 2018 Coastal Centre,1635 South Ridgewood Avenue, Suite 107, South Daytona, FL Office (386) FAX: (386) Volusia County NEWSLETTER not NEWSPAPER Serving Districts: 8, 19, 20, 21, 32 Website: aadaytona.org A.A. s Responsibility Statement I AM responsible. When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of A.A. to always be there. And for that: I am responsible. Heard It Through the Grapevine Editor s Pick Gratitude For Meditation - From working Step Eleven myself and listening to the experiences of others, I have learned that the ten preceding Steps must be worked before the meditation in Step Eleven can be done with any measure of success. For instance, we should review each day, good and bad (Tenth Step) and make spot check inventories for moments of emotional tension. After this work is accomplished, meditation can be done-although consistent effort on our part is required. Immediately upon awakening, I kneel down and pray for sobriety in the coming day and for GOD s mercy and grace. Then, I say the Third Step Prayer (Big Book page 63). In repeating the Seventh Step Prayer (Big Book, page 76), I add my own character defects, and I also say the Serenity Prayer and a few of our AA slogans. Now I am ready to meditate. I select a spot as possible. Sitting in a comfortable, straight-backed chair with my arms resting on its arms, my feet flat on the floor, and my eyes closed, I begin to repeat to myself over and over again a phrase or a word such as GOD is love, truth, or Thy will be done. After a while, my mind becomes bored with this repetition, and my thoughts wander to activities planned for the day or what I did yesterday or fears, or resentments I may have at the time. I watch these thoughts, so to speak, and eventually get tired of them and automatically return to the phrase or word I had been repeating in the beginning. I say automatically now; however, this habit was developed only after repeated practice and effort, a day at a time. I continue the repetition of the word or phrase to myself. I become bored again and my mind wanders again, and so the process goes. I try to meditate effortlessly. I try to relax. If I itch, I scratch where it itches. If my position in the chair becomes uncomfortable, I change it. If noise occurs, I accept it calmly and continue my meditation. Whether, in my opinion, I am meditating well or not, I continue. My willingness to try to seek GOD s will and gain more sanity is the most important thing. Heard It Through the Grapevine- Gratitude For Meditation (Con t page 4.) 4 Heard It Through The Grapevine-Front Story page (Con t) (Con t Front page-heard it Through the Grapevine- Gratitude for Meditation I continue to practice Step Eleven throughout the day. I often repeat the Third and Seventh Step Prayers silently or out loud, to myself or on the phone and in person with other AA s who do this kind of work. I talk to GOD. I practice his presence in my life, trying to improve conscious contact with him. When walking to and from work and at other times during the day, I may repeat the words Thy will be done for every four steps I take one word for one step. This is a convenient discipline and provides another opportunity for conscious contact with my Higher power. The result of all this Eleventh Step work is a greater willingness to accept life for what it is. To deal with reality instead of rationalizing the way I want it to be. Periods of serenity occur more often and so do thoughts of others. Overwhelming self-concern is reduced. The feeling that things will work out as long as I stay sober becomes stronger. The thought that GOD s will really is the answer for my life comes to mind more frequently. As the Twelve and Twelve says (page 105), Perhaps one of the greatest rewards of meditation and prayer is the sense of belonging that comes to us. We no longer live in a hostile world. Thank You. 5 Steps and Traditions, Concepts of the month Step 11 Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with GOD as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. Tradition 11 Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, films and the internet. Concept 11 the trustees should always have the best possible committees, corporate service directors, executives, staffs, and consultants. Composition, qualifications, induction procedures, and rights and duties will always be matters of serious concern. ANNIVERSARIES are to be ed to editor or turned into office by the 15th of every month. If your name does not appear with your home group, then you have more than one home group. Whichever home group comes in first is what gets published. 1 home group only people. Members are only suppose to have 1 home group according to Central office in New York. Have to limit it down for space reasons for other people and other groups when giving a listing. Thank You. 5 Volusia County Intergroup

7 From the Archives... Reprinted from Hi n Dry November 2016 In the Archives room we have a copy of the menu from the Annual AA Dinner celebrating Bill s 24th anniversary in November 1958 at the Hotel Astor in New York City. The dinner was sponsored by the Intergroup Association of New York. This menu was donated by Frank P. of Deltona and is usually part of the Archives exhibit at Intergroup functions. In the General Service publication, October/November 1994 of Box 459 there is an article about the origins of the gratitude dinner. In AA - November is Gratitude Month, The General Service Board started giving gratitude dinners in the 1940 s to express gratitude for our individual sobriety. The reason November was chosen as gratitude month is the connection to Thanksgiving Day as well as Bill W. s sobriety date. (For some time Bill W. thought he got sober in November but It was later calculated that his sobriety date was actually December 11th.) The first Gratitude Dinner was held in Daytona Beach at the Indigo Lakes Golf Club on November 19th It was sponsored by District 8 and the price was $9.00. In 1984 the dinner was at the Daytona Inn on beachside and the price had risen to $ Patsy R. decided that was too much money for a newly sober AA to spend and we will have our own Gratitude Dinner in New Smyrna. The 1st Gratitude Dinner in District 20 was on November 16, 1985 at the Coronado Recreation Hall. There were 250 guest and tickets were $3.00. Each group donated a cooked turkey and stuffing was donated by the Beachside group. Patsy R. donated the vegetables (green beans with bacon), another group contributed cranberry sauce and Alanon provided the desserts. Cindy P. was in charge of the kitchen and the mashed potatoes and gravy. Decorations were live plants in little pots grown by Ruth Ann W. and Carolyn C. A happy face seal on one of the plastic silverware packets on each table signified who took the decorations home. In 1994 the location in New Smyrna was changed to the Epiphany Church in Port Orange because a larger facility was required. Capacity was 300 and the ticket price was still $3.00. In 2007 the location was changed to the First Baptist Church in New Smyrna because the Epiphany church could no longer accommodate our group. Tickets were now $ The next year the dinner moved to the Brannon Center. When construction started on the new Brannon Center in 2014, the dinner moved back to the Baptist Church. This year it will be at Sacred Heart Church and tickets are still $ Groups that can, donate 2 turkeys and the vegetables and fixins are catered. The Gratitude Dinner history in New Smyrna is from the District 20 Archives donated to the Intergroup Archives by David and Rosemary L. The first Gratitude Dinner in District 19 was held at St. Peter s Catholic Church in Deland in 1987and attendees were asked to bring a dessert. The following year it was a dinner dance and tickets were $5.00. It moved to the First Baptist Church in Deland for a year in 1992 and then back to St. Peters in The tickets were $6.00. In 2001 Our Lady of the Lakes in Deltona was the location and the price was now up to $8.00. This year it will be at Sacred Heart Church and tickets are still $ Located at : 998 Father Donlon Drive (off US1) New Smyrna Beach. Bring a dessert to share.
