WHAT IS MENDED HEARTS? Mended Hearts is a United Statesbased charity which functions as a support group for individuals suffering from heart disease. It was founded in 1952 by cardiac surgery pioneer Dwight Harken. Dr. Dwight Harken was the first surgeon in history to repeatedly perform successful heart surgery. Dwight Harken asked four post-surgery heart patients to get together to give encouragement and support to each other and prospective patients. It was there that these patients spoke of their "mended hearts". Mended Hearts offers a program for the families of children born with congenital heart defects known as Mended Little Hearts. en.wikipedia.org

Assistant to the Visiting Coordinator Help Tim Crane with arranging the Mended Hearts Visiting schedule to visit patients pre- or post- surgery at Cape Cod Hospital. Assist in preparing reports for inclusion in the Newsletter. Please read Tim s report on page 3. All of these positions just take TIME and not very much of it at all. This will be the only newsletter MAILED to those on our mailing list. This and all other newsletters will be available via ONLY!! 40 0 Total Visits for April 1 to July-40 Total Visits since inception of the Program April through July was fairly normal for visiting in the several cardiac wards on the 3rd floor at Cape Cod Hospital. We continued to postpone visiting the Hyannis and Falmouth rehab units due to my ongoing recovery from strokes in February and March, along with a mitral valve repair in late June. We ll try to re-start those sessions in upcoming weeks. Visiting pre and post surgery and procedure cardiac patients in the hospital, as well as those patients in the Cape Cod Healthcare Cardiac Rehab facilities, is a wonderful way to give back by offering hope and encouragement to both hospitalized and recovering patients and caregivers Visitors must be Mended Hearts members in good standing, qualified as Cape Cod Hospital Volunteers, complete our Mended Hearts Training Program and either have had some form of heart surgery or procedure, or be heart surgery or procedure patient caregivers. Our visiting of patients generally takes place at 1 P.M. on Thursdays. A normal visiting tour takes an hour or so. If you are at all interested in becoming a Mended Hearts Visitor, or learning more about the visiting program, please let me know. It s great to be alive and helping others!
