HEALING FOR US, BY US: ASIAN PACIFIC ISLANDER SEXUAL ASSAULT SURVIVORS RECLAIMING HEALING Presenters: Jong-Ling Wu Wanda Pathomrit
PRESENTATION OBJECTIVES: Understand the unique context for Asian Pacific Islander (API) immigrant survivors of sexual assault (SA). Understand the importance of partnership when trying to serve API communities. Re-envision healing by thinking outside traditional modalities of healing and providing a culturally grounded response to API immigrant SA survivors. Ex: Thai Community Development Center ( Thai CDC) Massage Work Healing group project.
Understand the unique context for API immigrant survivors of sexual assault
Understand the importance of partnership when trying to serve API communities
SEXUAL ASSAULT COLLABORATIVE (SAC) Center for the Pacific Asian Family (CPAF) partners with 5 other API agencies to provide the following initiatives for Domestic Violence (DV) and Sexual Assault (SA) survivors: Prevention and education outreach workshops Over-the-phone counseling services Build a network of community advocates Create in-language support programs for survivors Building capacity to serve survivors directly

CREATING A SAFE SPACE CPAF Anonymity/distance from community policing Safe space to constigmafront cultural Direct Case Management/Counseling services Community Org Trust/Rapport Navigating local current language of the space and time and generation Access for hard to reach survivors

CULTURALLY RELEVANT SERVICES IN COMMUNITY (CONT.) Provide safety during the current political climate: Maintaining safe access to services for vulnerable populations Enhance outreach via ethnic print and online media, word of mouth In-language TV, radio, social media: Facebook, LINE, Kakao, WeChat

HOW DID WE GET HERE? ThaiCDC s existing relationship with Thai-speaking massage parlor employees and parlor owners; knowledge of Thai Town ThaiCDC & UCLA joint community research and survey: what would be helpful for you? CPAF in-house knowledge and relationship with potential guest instructors ThaiCDC recruiting participants and providing interpretation
HIGHLIGHTS OF RESEARCH FOR OUR MASSAGE SUPPORT GROUP The media and law enforcement mainly focus on the negative aspects of massage parlors, such as human trafficking and prostitution investigations; these perceptions are often heavily racialized. These raids and shutdowns of several massage parlors often result in criminalizing and further stigmatizing the women.
HIGHLIGHTS OF RESEARCH FOR OUR MASSAGE SUPPORT GROUP Massage parlor workers may be vulnerable to issues ranging from immigration, unfair labor practices, and sexual harassment. Masseuse work is often the only available employment for Asian immigrant women who face barriers to the formal economy: low English fluency, undocumented status, limited housing options, and remittance commitments [sending money back home to family].
