1 SOS Health Foundation Annual Report FY13

2 Lynda Cunningham SOS Health Foundation General Manager This year has been yet another amazing adventure as the SOS Health Foundation Board, staff and volunteers contributed to an enormously pleasing result. Our effectiveness grows as we continue with purpose to fulfill our vision to improve the health of disadvantaged people within Australia. members provided valuable input into the development of a plan and proposal for a full physiotherapy practice to be established on Palm Island. This was presented to the Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council in June, was unanimously accepted, and space, which is a rare commodity, has been allocated by the Council. A name change to SOS Health Foundation, the release of our three year Strategic Plan and the commencement of a website redevelopment have been key developments that will better reflect the work we do to all our stakeholders. There have been many highlights in the past 12 months. Health Outreach Mission Nhulunbuy (Gove) Establishing and maintaining an ongoing physiotherapy program in North East Arnhem Land in partnership with a local health agency, Laynha Health (part of Laynhapuy Homelands Aboriginal Corporation) based in Yirrkala. Visiting remote Homeland communities ranging from Yolngu people, volunteer physios have added enormous value to Laynha Health s medical teams. These Homelands have not had physiotherapy services available to them for many years. Since the program commenced in November 2012, the physio is often the busiest member of the medical team during visits to these remote communities. Physios are also adding further value by providing in service training for the Laynha staff around the services they can provide to ensure better utilisation of their expertise. Health Outreach Mission Palm Island Volunteers have provided much needed support for the local indigenous community by providing physio and practical help at various facilities including Ferdy s Drug & Alcohol Rehab Centre, Child and Family Services and Sandy Boyd Aged Care Hostel. Of particular note, the aged care residents have had full assessments and individual treatment plans developed for the very first time. This and the establishment of ongoing training for Health Workers at Sandy Boyd has already had an impact on staff confidence and ability as well as the care the residents are receiving. SOS Health Foundation Physiotherapy Practice Palm Island Although Health Outreach Missions have been somewhat effective, recent visits have highlighted the need for a more permanent service. Fundraising initiatives Led by the SOS State Representatives in South Australia and Victoria, two new fundraising events were coordinated and executed by volunteers in the respective states. Walk4Significance (SA) a 15km walk held in April which raised over $1,800. Thanks to Jodie Downes of Back In Motion Campbelltown, who worked tirelessly to pull this event together. Even the rain on the day didn t dampen the spirits of Back In Motion staff, family and friends who walked on the day to support health programs for the disadvantaged. SOS Winter Gala (VIC) held in the delightful Wonderland Spiegeltent in Melbourne. Through sponsorship and an auction, around $20,000 was raised on the night. The event was a credit to Ian Tran (Back In Motion Braybrook Practice ), and a team of volunteers who put in many hours of work to put on this fabulous night of celebration, fun and excitement with lots of wow moments as we raised awareness and funds to support SOS initiatives. What s next at SOS Health Foundation The next year is looking great as we continue to build momentum and add two bold new initiatives, both to be launched in the second half of SOS Health Foundation Physiotherapy Pro Bono Clinic Melbourne CBD (partnering with Salvation Army Melbourne Project 614). This program will be staffed by volunteer physios and commenced early August, SOS Health Foundation Physiotherapy Practice Palm Island. This practice will be staffed by a fulltime physiotherapist and a local administration assistant. Renovations and fit out will begin later this year. SOS Health Foundation Report Over several months we have been setting the ground work to determine the type of service most needed within the community to ensure we assist in Bridging the Gap in Health Outcomes on Palm Island in the long term. Meetings with existing service providers and community Annual Report FY13 Back In Motion 41

3 Thank you Back In Motion We acknowledge the generosity and support of the Back In Motion Health Group both financially and in volunteering. Without you we would not have been able to achieve such amazing results. We look forward to continuing partnering with Back In Motion into the future. Our Board Jason Smith, Executive Chairman Peter Bain, Matthew Burns, Nikki Capp, Paulina Smith, State Representatives Ian Tran, Back In Motion Braybrook (VIC) Helen Swift, Back In Motion Mermaid Waters (QLD) Jodie Downes, Back In Motion Campbelltown (SA) FY13 in a nutshell Work 4 Significance: $74,000 General Donations: $43,000 Back In Motion Health Group Donations: $58,000 Total Income: $ 175,000 Founder contribution for Admin costs: $87, Number of Health Outreach Missions: 8 Number of Volunteers: 63 Testimonials I (Lynda) was approached by a local as our team walked across a paddock to our next activity while on an outreach mission on Palm Island. I saw your physios teaching strapping to the footy players at training last night. We need that for my club, for all of our sports. Our mob doesn t have these opportunities, someone to teach the right way. Our players get injured and can t play, and can t work.. When are you coming back? Palm Island Men s Rugby League Coach Management, carers and residents are eternally grateful for your time, effort, expertise, empathy and professionalism you bestowed on us. Thank you again From us all at Sandy Boyd on Palm Island. Prior to this trip, I questioned how effective we could be and just how much help we could offer, but as I set myself up in the small consult room (in the Homeland community of Dhalinybuy) I was very surprised how effective this visit would be. I was learning so much about the local indigenous, and I also learned a lot about myself as a person and that I should try and give back to the community more and not just money! Kane Burrow and Physiotherapist, Back In Motion Bentleigh Number of Volunteer hours: 2, A two hour journey on our first day saw us travelling from Yirrkala into Arnhem Land, the home of the Yolngu. In a small community of around 40 to 50 people we set up a clinic on the verandah of the two room school. Here, outdoors in the over 30 o heat, people came to see the doctor, the nurse and, on this day, me, the physiotherapist. Looking at the surrounds, I felt as far from Melbourne as ever, yet each person I met made me feel welcome and at home as the Yulngu invited me into their community, into their homes and into their lives.
