Many of the resources can also be used in small groups or for individual study to help create caring congregations. This guide was prepared for Mental Health Month. Addiction Alcohol Domestic Violence Drugs Forgiveness Video Resources DVD68 Shadow Voices: Finding Hope in Mental Illness Persons from all across the U.S. with mental illness tell their stories, plus experts and advocates in the field add perspectives and insights. In addition to the original 58 minute program as shown on television, the DVD includes 2 hours of extra material. DVD87 Creating Caring Congregations Three people share their stories of living with mental illness. The video outlines a 5 step plan for communities of faith. Local churches, by adopting this plan, can begin to develop programs to meet the needs of people who have mental illness as well as their families. DVD136 The Power of Forgiveness Every human being gets hurt in ways both big and small, and in turn we sometimes inflict hurt on others. There comes a time when we face the difficult choice to forgive others and to forgive ourselves. But forgiveness can seem impossible, even undesirable. The Power of Forgiveness presents four studies that open our minds and our hearts to a new understanding of forgiveness so we can embrace forgiveness as a key to a wholesome and free life. 4 sessions: The Origins of Forgiveness, What is Forgiveness? Why Do We Need to Forgive?, How is Forgiveness Possible? Guidelines are included. DVD162 Addiction: Why Can't They Just Stop? A documentary produced by HBO aimed at helping Americans understand addiction as a treatable brain disease. Through personal stories, it paints a picture of the complexity of the struggle. Includes an additional 5 hours of supplemental information. Comes with leader guidelines and fact sheet. The video is split into nine segments. DVD286 Mental Illness and Families of Faith Subtitled: How Congregations Can Respond. Video presentations of various issues are now available on

3 one DVD. Includes the following titles: Introduction, Coming Out of the Dark; Mental Illnesses in Different Age Groups; Mental Illnesses and Families of Faith; Understanding Depression; Overcoming Stigma; Addiction and Depression; Anxiety, Overcoming the Fear; Teenage Depression & Suicide; Eating Disorders: Wasting Away; Creating Caring Congregations. DVD326 Domestic Violence: What Churches Can Do This one hour program for use in Christian education offers basic information on domestic violence, as well as concrete ideas about how congregations can become involved in prevention and can offer a safe space for battered women. Utilizing a 20 minute video (an edited version of Broken Vows) the program provides worship materials, background information, discussion questions, and practical steps congregations can take to become involved in preventing domestic violence. Includes a 24 page study guide and a package of awareness brochures. KIT113 Celebrate Recovery A Program for Implementing a Christ Centered Recovery Ministry in Your Church. Alcoholism Divorce Sexual Abuse Codependency Domestic Violence Drug Addiction Sexual Addiction Food Addiction Gambling Addiction and many more. There is a way the church can help the hurting move beyond their wounds to experience the healing and forgiveness of Christ. Since 1991, more than 200,000 people have participated in the Celebrate Recovery programs offered at more than 3,500 churches, prisons, and rescue missions. Drawn from the Beatitudes, Celebrate Recovery helps people resolve painful problems in the context of the church as a whole. Newly updated, the kit includes: 20 minute DVD introductory guide for leaders, leader's guide, an example of each of the four participant's guides, CD ROM with 25 lessons, CD ROM with sermon transcripts and reproducible promotional materials, 5 volume audio CD sermon series. Resources that begin with VC are on VHS tape and require a VCR. VC595 Just Listen Living with Medical Choices Health care decisions and how they are made. Its purpose is to raise awareness of the new complex issues in medical decision making that each one of us will have to face. Discussion guidelines are included. VC597 Broken Vows: Religious Perspectives on Domestic Violence This program presents the stories of six formerly battered women. It shows concrete ideas about how religious institutions can work to end domestic violence. Two part documentary of 37 minutes and 29 minutes. VC598 Hear Their Cries: Religious Response to Child Abuse This is a documentary on the role of clergy and lay leaders in preventing, recognizing and effectively responding to situations of child abuse. The program is intended for the training of clergy and lay leaders. It is recommended that this program be used by a skilled facilitator.

4 VC601 Wings Like a Dove: Healing for the Abused Christian Woman This video provides guidance to Christian women experiencing abuse and for the clergy and others who work with victims of domestic abuse. VC1251 The Journey Toward Wholeness Six minute sessions: Introduction, The Language of God: Creating Space, The Whole Truth: Articulating, The Heart of Transformation: Forgiving, Weaving the Whole: Integrating and Letting Go, Living the Empowered Life. Book and leader's guide are included. Joining Ken Bakken, physician, pastor and public health scientist, are Drs. Herbert Benson and Martin Marty. VC1279 Beyond the News: Sexual Abuse True stories of survivors and perpetrators told by actors. Psychotherapist and author Carolyn Heggen shares new perspectives on working with the issue. VC1495 When Your Parent Needs You: A Guide to Positive Growth When Caring for Aging Parents This video focuses on the positive aspects possible through the experience of caregiving. Comes with a resource booklet for reference. Examples are shown from real people living through this time of life. VC1638 Warning Signs: How to Help Someone Who Is Suicidal This video covers topics such as: understanding depression and its connection with suicide, recognizing sings that a friend or loved one is suicidal, the groups most at risk for suicide, and the do's and don'ts for helping a person in crisis. Comes with small guide with information for suicide prevention. VC1695 Bullying, What Every Adult Needs to Know Bullying has serious consequences for both the victims and the bullies. This video helps the viewer understand what bullying is, and how adults can help the young people in their lives, when bullying is a problem. Includes a resource booklet. VC2017 Revival of Hope: A Church Guide for Community Action on Drug Concerns This study can be done in one or several sessions. Includes "Making a Difference" booklet, video viewer's and leader's guide, and two resource pamphlets. Produced by the Pan Methodist Coalition. Books BK57 I Was Sick and You Visited Me: Guide to Visitation Ministry A booklet to be used as a guide for visitation ministries, giving short and helpful advice on what to do under a variety of situations when visiting in faith to those in need. BK166 Learning to Re design Your Future After Crisis Has Struck: Small Group Experience Guide for facilitators of small groups dealing in recovery. BK223 Ministry with Older Persons: A Guide for Clergy and Congregations Descriptive chapters on the myths of aging, counseling, ethical issues, and ministry ideas. An example of

5 a survey assessing needs of older members of the congregation and a "Dying Person's Bill of Rights" are included in the appendix. BK329 Building a Ministry for Homebound and Nursing Home Residents A practical guide for individuals and local church groups that are beginning the process of implementing a visitation program. Issues facing the aging, suggestions for worship in this setting, grief guidance and volunteer training are all covered in this little book. BK727 Christian Caregiving: A Way of Life Dr. Kenneth Haugk, pastor, clinical psychologist, and founder of Stephen Ministries, blends the best of the social sciences with a distinctively Christian approach to caring and relating to provide a valuable guide for nonprofessional caregivers. This book describes the theology and practice of Christian caregiving and has been a Christian bestseller since its release in Used in Stephen Minister training. Youth Video Resources Resources that begin with VC are on VHS tape and require a VCR. VC288 Edge TV 10: Suicide Suicide, Making a Difference, Artist Profile: Margaret Becker, Nathan: The Rest of the Story, Get Real, Music Video: "Keep My Mind".

6 VC304 Edge TV 3: Addictive Behavior Addictive Behavior, Report on Missionaries in Zaire, Bryan Duncan, Former Soviet students experience a Christian Camp, Addiction. VC938 Sexual Harassment 101: Girls/Boys This two part program addresses the issue of sexual harassment as it is happening in schools in spite of policies that prohibit it. Building self esteem and prevention skills are highlighted. Also included is a discussion by boys and girls about the problem and its effects. VC971 Sunburst: Teens and Alcohol Jennifer's drinking party cause serious problems. This video teaches that people say and do things after they have been drinking that they would never do otherwise. Trust and friendships can be broken when the wrong decision about drinking is made. VC1672 A Cry For Help: How to Help a Friend Developed for youth this video covers topics such as: understanding depression and its connection with suicide, recognizing verbal, behavioral and situational signs that show a friend is suicidal, intervention skills, and do's and don'ts when reaching out. VC1696 Stop Bullying! Standing Up for Yourself and Others Many young people feel helpless in situations where they are being bullied. Mark Brown explains what bullying is and what to do if it is happening to you or to someone else. "Doing the Right Thing" isn t always easy, but being quiet only makes thing worse. Youth Books BK173 Youth Search: Small Group Resources for Older Youth A small group series for youth that is issue based. Each booklet covers a separate subject. Included in this series: Startup: Preparing to Lead the group; Conflict, Death, Knowing Jesus, Growing Spiritually, Confronting Fear, After High School, Body Image, Stress & Time, Parent Talk, Relationships, Having Fun. Can be checked out as a whole series or individually by request. BK699 Burst: Bullies & Mean Girls Leader's Guide BURST: Bullies and Mean Girls addresses issues all too familiar to today's youth. From the girls who use gossip to the boys who use physical threats (and vice versa), bullying is as rampant as ever. More information out there via social networking, texting, and even sexting means today's teens are vulnerable in new dangerous ways. This resource will be a short term study on the relationships that use power to define roles in negative ways so that youth group participants will be able to identify, avoid, and heal from harmful situations while learning more about God's love for them and hopes for their lives. 6 sessions. 7 BK700 Body Image: God's Way vs. The World's Way The United Methodist Youth of the Alabama West Florida Conference wrote this series of eight lessons on body image for use in youth ministry. Each lesson contains a scripture focus, activity, devotion, discussion questions, and a challenge. These lessons are also available for download at: 1_WBCPCZ7T.pdf.
