2 Recovery College NHFT offers educational lessons and workshops. All courses are recovery based and focus on different aspects of mental and neurodevelopmental health. They aim to help individuals who have experienced mental and neurodevelopmental health challenges to live the life they want to lead. Each course is written and delivered by both experts by experience and practitioners. We want students to benefit from the knowledge and experience of someone who has faced the challenges of mental ill health and someone with professional expertise on the topic.
3 COURSES HOPE CONTROL OPPORTUNITY Courses can be attended by people who use NHFT mental and neurodevelopmental health services, their support network of friends, families, carers and NHFT staff. All courses are free to attend. This prospectus will provide a summary of courses available for 2018/19. Additional courses may be found on the NHFT Recovery College webpage. 4 RECOVERY AN INTRODUCTION This course will help to identify what recovery means to you, as well as explore the established definitions of recovery, including the principles of hope, control and opportunity. The course includes discussion of the lived experience of personal recovery from experts by experience as well as short videos to inspire new thoughts on personal goals. ARTISTIC PRACTICES AND MINDFULNESS The aim of this course is for you to explore how applying mindful techniques to our creative activities can calm our minds. You will learn how some famous artists linked their creativity to their recovery of mental illness, using their art to express emotions that cannot be spoken or written down. The course will include a brief introduction to artistic techniques and mediums such as pens, pencils and charcoal, and show you how they could be used in your own exploration of creativity. Level of participation: No artistic experience is needed for this course, everyone is welcome. You will have an opportunity to use mediums to explore your own creativity.
5 COLLABORATIVE CARE PLANNING The aim of this course is to encourage practitioners, service users, carers and family members to work together to coproduce care plans which share control over planning care and treatment and ensure shared hope for future recovery as well as opportunity to develop the recovery pathway. This course enables service users, carers and staff to understand the value of working together and feel skilled in using the My Story CPA form as a tool for building coproduced care. COMEDY IN RECOVERY The aim of this course is for you to discover how the art of making each other laugh can improve confidence, selfesteem, teamwork and, in turn aid recovery. Each week includes a variety of improvisation games, discussion and celebration of some of our favourite comics, the biology of laughter, and formulas for writing jokes. Level of participation: This course is very interactive. You will be expected to participate in activities, games and discussion with the trainers and the group. DRUGS AND ALCOHOL EFFECTS, MENTAL HEALTH AND SELF-MANAGEMENT The aim of this course is to give you an understanding of how drugs and alcohol affect the brain and body. During the course we will look at why people might want to use alcohol and drugs and the effects on both people s mental and physical health.
6 EMPLOYMENT CV WORKSHOP The aim of this training is to provide you with support to gain a clear understanding on how to create a CV and covering letter appropriate to your skills, experience and sector of employment you wish to enter. Course content will include: What a CV is What information should and should not go on a CV The different types of CVs chronological, skills-based, etc Different examples of CVs to compare and contrast quality and formats Potential challenges when writing a CV and how to overcome these How to begin compiling a CV for yourself What a covering letter is and their uses. Level of participation: You will have activities to complete in pairs and may be asked to share with the trainers and group your employment goals. There will also be a student handbook with excercises in for you to work through.
7 EMPLOYMENT JOB GOALS AND SKILLS This course is ideal for you if you are considering paid employment, but are not sure what kind of jobs you would like to apply for. Course content will include: Aspirations and areas of interest Skills and strengths The type of environment you would like to work in The types of industries and job roles that might be suited to you. Towards the end of the session you will have the opportunity to spend time with one of the facilitators to discuss your next steps. Level of participation: You will be expected to participate in activities in small groups and may be asked to share with the trainers and group your employment goals. HOW TO BECOME INVOLVED WITH NHFT This course will explore everything you need to know about volunteering and involvement and what opportunities are available at Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT). We will examine the possibilities and establish how volunteering and involvement can empower people and aid in their recovery. The course is aimed at people who are thinking about taking up opportunities to be involved with the Trust.
8 INSPIRING HOPE AROUND THE AUTISM SPECTRUM This course is aimed at those with experience of autism either personally, as a carer or family member or as a healthcare professional. It will give you an insight into autism and how you can still achieve your goals - autism does not have to hold you back. With an example where independence gave hope, control and opportunity, the aim of this course is to inspire you to find your own path in life. Course content will include: Identify what changes you would like to make in your own life Plan what changes can be made using a strengths approach Begin action planning to make the change real. Level of participation: Students will be given the chance for discussion and to share information and experiences with the trainers and the rest of the group, but this is optional. INTRODUCTION TO MINDFULNESS This course offers an introduction to mindfulness to aid relapse prevention. We will clarify what mindfulness is, outline the potential benefits and guide you through brief exercises. Guided mindfulness meditations will be around ten minutes in duration; you may sit quietly if you do not wish to participate in a particular meditation for any reason. This course is not suitable for those who are currently suffering with acute symptoms of post-traumatic stress.
9 KEEPING WELL AT WORK If you would like to explore strategies to support your wellbeing in the workplace and minimise the impact of your mental health on your work either now or in the future, this course may be for you. Course content will include: Self-reflection on what being well in work looks like and personal strengths Understanding strategies and how official procedures can be supportively utilised Starting a wellbeing in work plan to help you feel more confident to be able to flourish in the work place. By the end of the session, you will have partly completed your wellbeing in work plan and know where to go for further advice and guidance. Level of participation: You will have opportunities to participate in small group activities and share your thoughts with the group if you wish. You will be given a workplace wellbeing pack to take away.
10 LIVING WITH EMOTIONS This course is aimed at anyone interested in emotions and how to live with them. Most of us expect to live a happy, fulfilled and meaningful life, and when this does not happen we can feel confused, disorientated and unhappy. The course is taught through a mixture of lived experience and theory, with an emphasis on practical steps that can be taken to increase emotional resilience in life, whatever may arrive. We would invite participants to bring a willing and curious mind. Given the experiential nature of the course it is important that those attending have a degree of insight and self-sufficiency in order to be able to utilise the group environment to its full potential. MEN SUICIDE REDUCTION This course is ideal for men, their families, carers and clinicians to learn about the importance of warning signs, knowing the questions to ask, how to listen and access effective support to reduce the likelihood of suicide. Facilitators will refer to their lived experience and why they are passionate and motivated about men s suicide reduction. Information will be provided and discussions will be facilitated to increase participants understanding of a really difficult subject that needs to be talked about. Links to materials will be provided and recommended materials, e.g. books, apps.
11 MY MEDICATION AND MY RECOVERY The aim of this course is to improve basic understanding of mental health and the role of medication in the process of recovery. This is a one day course, comprised of three modules, to help you develop understanding around mental health and medication used to treat mental health conditions. In the first module we will help you develop a basic understanding of different types of mental illnesses. The second module focuses on medication; why medication is required, how different medications work and potential side effects. The last module will help you develop understanding of adapting a holistic approach towards recovery and the limitations of medication.
12 PERSONALITY DISORDER AWARENESS LEVEL TRAINING FOCUSING ON EMOTIONALLY UNSTABLE PERSONALITY DISORDER (EUPD) This is a one day awareness level course about Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder. The overall aim of this training is to help you understand what personality disorder is and how it impacts on those living with the diagnosis and those caring for someone with EUPD. It is hoped the training will reduce some of the stigma and misunderstanding surrounding this diagnosis. The course aims to be interactive and uses different methods of learning throughout the day to support learning for all. RECOVERY AND WELL-BEING IN EARLY DEMENTIA This course will enable you to gain more understanding of the impact of ageing, cognitive impairment and dementia on the body and brain. You will have the opportunity to share your experiences of your journey of dementia and using it positively to improve your well-being and develop recovery focused advance care planning. The course will highlight the impact of the diagnosis on the loved ones and will provide them with the meaningful information about the available support. Recommendations to support services and opportunities for further training will be made.
13 SMOKING REDUCTION TECHNIQUES FOR BETTER PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH If you are interested in stopping smoking or supporting others to do so, this course may be for you. The course gives you a clear understanding of how nicotine affects the brain and body, and how by stopping, overall health is improved. You will learn about the impact of smoking on mental health as well as relationships between smoking and mental health. SPIRITUALITY AND YOUR MENTAL HEALTH This course is for those who want to explore what spirituality is, how mental illness and spirituality are linked and how spirituality can be used in recovery from mental ill health. Many people consider spirituality to be about religion however there are many ways of being spiritual and spirituality can positively support wellbeing.
14 STORYTELLING AND RECOVERY This course explores the historical and cultural significance of storytelling. It aims to explore storytelling as a therapeutic process and uses experts by experience and by profession to share their reflections on this process. Consideration is given to the impact of storytelling on the way we view the world around us, our understanding of other people and of ourselves. This aims to make you feel empowered to reflect on your own stories and perhaps to consider how you might use these stories to further your recovery. Level of participation: This course does not invite you to share your stories with one another although group discussion of the topics presented is encouraged. WHAT IS CO-PRODUCTION? This course aims to provide a basic understanding of co-production and its benefits, provide space to consider how co-production can be implemented and the benefits and challenges of this. This course provides opportunity to try co-production tasks and consider the assets we all bring to a situation and action plan for future co-production activity.
