WELCOME It amazes me how many adults attribute part of their success to youth centres, sports clubs and arts programmes, with positive adults who supported and believed in them which helped them become rounded, engaged and motivated. OnSide Youth Zones believes all young people deserve somewhere safe and inspiring to go in their leisure time, our priority being those young people living in some of our most deprived communities who are most at risk of being excluded, becoming disaffected and getting left behind. Our ambition is to create 100 Youth Zones across the country over the next generation to give hundreds of thousands of young people somewhere safe and inspiring to go, to have fun, forge diverse friendships and get support for the things that matter in their lives. Already we can evidence that the OnSide approach works not only in terms of the impact on the lives and prospects for young people plus the wider societal benefits in the communities we operate, but also the robustness of the funding model with its combination of private philanthropy, public funding, young people and the community. The Director of Fundraising appointment is fundamental to our business strategy going forward and offers what I genuinely believe is an unrivalled opportunity. We are now a truly national organisation that requires a fundraising function that is led by a Director who matches this profile, shares our ambition and our belief that what we do really matters for current and future generations. There has not been anything to touch the scale of our ambition and our achievement in recent decades and I hope that you will want to play your part in the future success. Kathryn Morley Chief Executive OnSide Director of Fundraising August
INTRODUCTION OnSide s Youth Zones are designed to give young people aged 8-19 years old (25 for those with a disability) somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to in their leisure time; occupying their bodies and minds with fun activities, learning new skills and socialising in a safe, positive way. By working in true partnership, we have identified the challenges that need to be addressed in order to develop effective and sustainable youth services in our most deprived areas where the risk of being excluded, becoming disaffected and of getting left behind is high. Our model works because it is a unique partnership of private philanthropy, local authority, young people and the community that forms a dynamic four-way, inter-connecting relationship, which drives the success of an OnSide Youth Zone. Since 2008 we have achieved unparalleled success and growth, which now enables us to shift our focus for the foreseeable future to London. Our roots in North West of England and this will always be our OnSide Director of Fundraising August
spiritual home given the association of our Founder, Bill Holroyd, and the inspiration he found as Chairman of Bolton Lads and Girls Club. We know that by demonstrating that our model can work in the capital it will allow us to achieve our ultimate goal of 100 Zones across the country and with Youth Zones under development in Barnet, Barking and Dagenham and Croydon, we are well on the way to achieving this. Private philanthropy is a cornerstone of our strategy and as a result of our success over the past decade we can now put in place a national fundraising function to drive our ambition forward at pace. As Director of Fundraising you will oversee the development of all income streams paying particular attention to high-value partnerships with individual philanthropists and organisational donors. Key to your success will be the developing our fundraising to model the very best practice in a donor relationship stewardship to deliver long-term alliances. To achieve this, and aside from achieving our capital and revenue needs, you will have to grow a fundraising team that is best in class. OnSide Director of Fundraising August
OnSide 21ST CENTURY YOUTH PROVISION Youth Zones are designed to give young people aged 8-19, or up to 25 for those with a disability, somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to occupying their bodies and minds with engaging activities, helping them develop new skills and socialise in a safe, positive and accessible environment. More than 38,000 members make around 500,000 visits to OnSide Youth Zone s every year, attracting young people from the most disadvantaged communities. It s a four-way partnership OnSide is a unique partnership of the private sector, local authority, young people and the community that forms a dynamic four-way, inter-connecting relationship, which drives the success of an OnSide Youth Zone. OnSide Director of Fundraising August
Working by working in partnership, we have identified the challenges that need to be addressed in order to develop effective and sustainable youth services. How we create a youth zone Each and every Youth Zone presents its own set of unique and intricate funding challenges. A model of local ownership is a key success factor in ensuring financial sustainability of each Youth Zone into the future. This allimportant funding approach is split into two distinct areas of Capital and Revenue: Capital The cost of building and fitting out a Youth Zone is in the order of 6.5million. 3m is provided by the Council, with the site provided by the local authority and the remainder made up of grants, trusts funding and local philanthropic giving. The OnSide Foundation invests in the new Youth Zones by flowing capital grants raised by OnSide to each project. Revenue The cross-sector funding model is unique and sustainable. The annual running costs for a start-up Youth Zone are 1million; OnSide Director of Fundraising August
40% met by local authority support, 50% by the local private sector and 10% through membership and entry fees from young people. OnSide works with the local team to raise the first three years of private sector funding ahead of opening. Stakeholder engagement In developing new Youth Zones, OnSide adopts a total management approach, from supporting local stakeholders, identifying the need in each area for a Youth Zone, through to the completed building and its opening. Building design and development This includes the initial building design using experience gained from the six Youth Zones now operating, as well as the construction and internal specifications, ensuring it s all delivered on time and on budget. Alongside the physical building we work with the local Board, offering advice and support to raise the first three years revenue ahead of opening. Fundraising and marketing From overall branding and internal/external communications to supporting fundraising activities and helping the local community understand how they can make the most of the soon-to-be Youth Zone. As every business requires sound financial management, we have approved systems to manage capital, revenue, membership and attendance. Young people s development Throughout all of this we involve young people as much as possible; it s their Youth Zone. Young people s active participation and influence in areas of brand identity, transportation, fundraising and the interior design of the Youth Zone are fundamental to our approach. 12 MAIN PURPOSE A strategic senior level fundraising role to manage, develop and grow the existing fundraising team and to oversee all aspects of income generation for OnSide, in order to steer and support the charity to meet its ambitious goals for young people. Context of the role OnSide was established as a charity in 2008 to create Youth Zones across the UK. It has been growing rapidly ever since and has hugely exciting and ambitious plans to continue and accelerate this growth. Youth Zones are high quality, inspirational and well-run places, claiming only to offer young people somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to, but in reality provide so much more than this, changing many thousands of young lives, now on an incredible scale. We currently have a network of ten Youth Zones. Our role is to support both the existing network and create new Youth Zones across the UK. The next three Youth Zones to open are in London, with two following in the North West. Each Youth Zone starts with up to 6.5 million capital project, creating a new local charity, which will open seven days a week, with state-of-the-art facilities, delivering over 20 sporting, artistic, cultural and general recreational activities per session with additional targeted services also provided. Youth Zones are a proven model of youth service provision that is aligned to community needs and supported by cross-sector funding. Youth Zones give 8-19 year olds, and up to 25 for young people with a disability, affordable access to a broad range of sport, arts and OnSide Director of Fundraising August
employability services, designed to help them lead active, positive lives and raise their aspirations for themselves and their community. At the heart of the Onside Youth Zones Network is not only a hugely successful partnership between public, private and third sector organisations, the local community and young people themselves, but also by an overwhelmingly passionate and dedicated workforce, who are committed to improving the lives of young people throughout the UK. OnSide is now seeking to strengthen the team with the recruitment of a Director of Fundraising to enable it to meet its rapid growth plans nationally. The role will have responsibility for the management of all income generation, to include major donor development, grants and trusts, corporate partnerships and events all of which will contribute to the capital and revenue funding for new Youth Zones; in addition to setting a framework for the fundraising for open Youth Zones and ensuring OnSide centrally maintains its own core costs from private sector fundraising.
