THE CNH BUZZ THE CNH BUZZ THE CNH BUZZ DECEMBER-JANUARY PUBLICATION District Governor Edition December 1, 2012 Welcome to the Holiday Season full of busy schedules, family dinners, and an abundance of service opportunities! With service and frost in the air, your I am sure that you are a very busy BEE this month! I had a great time seeing many of you at Fall Rally and across the district as I visited Region Training Conferences! Meeting you is so inspiring and I love to hear all about your success as a President or a Vice President. As a district, we have been doing an excellent job keeping up with our goals. At Fall Rally, we were able to raised over $138,000 for the Pediatric Trauma Program; club rush season was definitely a success; and we continue to do more service! It is important that as we reach our fourth quarter, we continue to grow and do more to achieve all district, club and personal goals. This newsletter will provide you with information on a variety of topics. Please read through this newsletter to learn more about what the District Board has been doing to serve you, Key Club International Updates, Candidate Training Conference, Conclave, Major Emphasis, achieving more service hours and more! Introduction.1 Message from the Governor District Goals District News...2 What the District Board has been doing International Updates Events..3 CTC Conclave Elections Education..4 Major Emphasis Service Hours Goals.5 New Years Resolutions Resources...5 If you have any questions comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at any time. I absolutely love to hear from you. Yours in Service, From left to right: Tech Editor Rasmi, Secretary Lloyd, Treasurer Cannon, and myself at Fall Rally South. Photo taken by Charlie Sin. Page 1

district news The Executive officers have just finished visiting Region Training Conferences and Fall Rallies. It was a pleasure to be able to travel the district and learn all about your club and experience the passion that you have for Key Club. In addition to this, the executives have been working to prepare for our Winter Board Training Conference in January. We have also been busy with our one true love service! The Committee Leadership team is composted of our Executives, District News Editor and our six Committee Chairs. Together, the team has been preparing for District Convention in many different ways! From planning logistics to working with DNE Mark to compile the Convention Issue of the District Newsletter, we have all been busy bees! If you haven t already, BEE sure to check out the Convention Issue! You can find it on the CyberKey at cnhkeyclub.org The District Board (InfiniBEEs) have been incredibly busy planning out details for Fall Rally, Candidate Training Conference, and a multitude of division and region events. Each Lt. Governor serves on one of our six standing committees. Together, Lt. Governors have been producing many materials and inserts to better educate you on everything regarding Key Club! BEE sure to continually check the CyberKey for new updates regarding District Convention, District Projects, Kiwanis Family and Foundation, Member Recognition, Member Relations, and Policy, International, and Elections! At the next Division Council Meeting (DCM) thank your Lt. Governor for all that he or she has done to serve you and ask all about his or her involvement with the committee! The district task coordinators have been working to plan logistics for Convention as well. If you have any questions concerning the Service EXPO or Sargent At Arms opportunities, please contact them! Service EXPO: Bea Dimaunahan and Sean Burris Sargent At Arms: Vyvy Hoang and Josef Madrigal The Key Club International Board met at Kiwanis International in November to discuss a variety of topics. Check the Key Club International website (keyclub.org) to learn about news and updates. All amendments that Key Club passed at International Convention this year were passed by Kiwanis International. You can view these amendments in the KCI Guidebook and on the KCI website. The Membership Update Center has gone through many changes this year. As with many new items, it takes time for it to be adjusted. With that said, I do thank you for your patience with it! Also bee sure to pay club dues! Although the dues deadline for the club is December 1st, you can pay dues all throughout the year. It would be great to celebrate club rush week year round. Remember, the service never stops. If you are having challenges with the Membership Update Center, try to do a reset with the account and if that does not work, your Faculty Advisor may contact Member Services. Page 2

events Candidate Training Conference On January 12th at the District Office in Rancho Cucamonga, CA there will be a District Candidate Training Conference. This event will be for the members who plan on seeking an Executive or International Office to get trained by our Administrators and Executives. Please share information about this event with the members that you serve and look on the CyberKey for registration and tasks. If you have questions, please contact an Administrator or Executive. Conclave is an event that the current Lt. Governor will be hosting to elect the next Lt. Governor for the division. As a member within the division, it is important to BEE involved with the election process of your future leaders! The is also a great opportunity to get newly elected club officers and all club members more involved with the division. Each club will be allowed 2 Conclave delegates to vote for the candidates and each candidate will be allowed 5 minutes for their speech and 4 minutes for questioning. If your event has more than 2 candidates, a Nomination Conference will take place where the top two will be selected and voted upon before the Lt. Governor will be announced. If you are interesting in running to be a Lt. Governor BEE sure to contact your current Lt. Club Elections Governor. Also share this information with the members in the club that you serve. **This year, there was a change to the Service Agreement that all Lt. Governor Candidates must sign before running. The Service Agreement has been updated AND includes a new required section: Meeting with the Region Advisor. As Presidents and Vice Presidents it is important to work together as a team to conduct Club Elections. These elections should take place during the month of January. Work with your Club Board of Directors and Faculty Advisor to choose a date for the elections to take place. In addition to this, bee sure to prepare for the election. For help in leading an election, look on the CyberKey (cnhkeyclub.org) and contact your Lt. Governor. As we focus on recognition and elections, it is important to keep a few things in mind: 1. When you were elected, did your Lt. Governor provide you with valuable training? What can you do to provide even better training to your elect? 2. What do you wish you knew as an elect and how can you share that this year? 3. Remember that the more training and transition there is between you and your Lt. Governor elect, the further your legacy and the division you serve can grow! YOU are the beginning to an excellent ripple effect that has spread across our district. From the positivity, to the training, to the service and other opportunities, you have been the cause of a wonderful member experience this year! As we enter the fourth quarter, it is important to stay focused on your goals and everything that you want to accomplish personally, for the club, and for our district. Page 3

education Major Emphasis challenges all Key Clubs and members to focus on making an international impact through helping children. To fulfill the mission of the Major Emphasis, Key Club International serves children in many ways. Members participate in the hands-on service initiative, currently The Eliminate Project, and fundraise for Key Club International s preferred charities: Children s Miracle Network, March of Dimes and UNICEF. Beyond what you can do on behalf of Key Club International, there are many local opportunities to do something to help Major Emphasis. From book drives, to volunteering at elementary schools, to tutoring, to clothing donations, the ways to help children are A service-hour constitutes any hour of service performed by an individual Key Club member with the approval of his/her club s board of directors. Major Emphasis endless! Service Hours As a President or Vice President, it is important that you achieve over 50 hours of service! As leaders, it is also great to reach for the stars and complete over 75 hours of service! Planning an event counts as service according to the International Board as of January 2012! This means that so long as the home club board of directors approves of the planning/project, it is a Key Club service hour! From the planning and preparation to the indirect and direct service events, you certainly are a busy bee! Be sure to get recognized for your efforts through accurate reporting. Also continue to encourage your club Secretary to complete an accurate Monthly Report Form and submit it on time! One fun idea to get members more interested in Some creative fundraisers for service partners such as the Eliminate Project and UNICEF, Children s Miracle Network, and March of Dimes include: dance marathons, awake-a-thons, miracle minute, concessions, change race, and much more! For a detailed explanation of these ideas and more, access Key Club International s Service Directory at: Service/Guide_KeyClub_Service_Directory_ - _Complete.sflb.ashx The Kiwanis International Mission statement is Children their future, our focus so take the time to talk to your sponsoring Kiwanis Club about doing an event to benefit Major Emphasis! Community Service is by helping members plan events that they are interested in! Ask members to complete a survey with projects that they want to do then help them plan the event. This helps get members more involved and it provides the members with an opportunity to help a cause that they are truly passionate about! Here is a list of a few service and fundraising ideas. Also, BEE sure to check out the Service Directory listed above! Adopt a family Book/toy/toiletry/ food/coat drive Food bank Cards to soldiers Telephones for troops Soup kitchen Raise money to take children toy shopping Gift Wrapping W i n t e r b r e a k classroom cleaning Thank a teacher Soda tabs for Ronald McDonald Win ter festiv al/ carnival Special Olympics PTP Dolls Variety shows Page 4

resources District, Club, and Personal Goals The fourth quarter is the perfect time to continue working on goals! Promote active reporting so that we can reach 800,000 hours of service. Promote dues payment (all year) so that we can reach 46,000 members. Promote PTP events and donations so that we can reach $154,000 for PTP. Remind clubs to turn in their Trick-or-Treat/UNICEF funds to the Eliminate Project so that we can begin to conquer our $500,000 goal for the Eliminate Project. Remember that success never stops and that we can focus on our goals all year! Set a few New Year Resolutions as a club! What are long and short term goals that you and the club hope to complete in 2013? Maybe it is reaching a goal for service hours or membership or maybe it is having more events. Regardless of the resolutions, the New Year is a great time to set goals for transition into the new Key Club year to come. Member Reflectors Although our District is large and our clubs vary in size, socio-economic levels and personalities, you are not alone: we are one organization one ohana who support each other! Join any of these reflectors to gain more information about Key Club, what s happening on the District Level and much more! I suggest that you assign each board member to participate in the reflector that aligns more closely to their position so that your club can grow even more. Not only are these reflectors for the officer and appointed board members, members are welcome to join as well! These reflectors will give all members a voice. BEE sure to advertise these to the members that you serve.
