Background: AAP and the UN Foundation Campaign Global Vaccine Advocacy Education Materials Program WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE AAP AND PROGRAM? The goal of the program is to raise awareness about vaccine-preventable diseases and their affects globally through the campaign to educate families in pediatric clinicians offices. WHAT IS THE UN FOUNDATION AND THE CAMPAIGN? The United Nations Foundation builds public-private partnerships to address the world s most pressing problems, and broadens support for the United Nations through advocacy and public outreach. Through campaigns and initiatives, the Foundation connects people, ideas, and resources to help the UN solve global problems. The Foundation was created in 1998 as a U.S. public charity by entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner and is supported by corporations, foundations, governments and individuals. Shot@Life educates, connects and empowers Americans to champion vaccines as one of the most costeffective ways to save the lives of children in developing countries. The campaign rallies the American public, elected officials, and civil society partners around the fact that we can save a child s life every 20 seconds by expanding access to vaccines. By encouraging Americans to learn about, advocate and donate to vaccines, Shot@Life aims to decrease vaccine-preventable childhood deaths and give every child a shot at a healthy life. Shot@Life builds on the UN Foundation s 13-year legacy in global vaccine efforts as a leading partner in the Measles and Rubella Initiative and Global Polio Eradication Initiative. HOW IS THE AAP INVOLVED? One of the best ways to eliminate disease outbreaks and reintroduction of diseases in the U.S. is to make sure all children around the world have access to immunizations. It is in the best interest of the U.S. population to rid the world of diseases like polio and measles. Expanding access to vaccines strengthens our ability to fight disease globally, keeps our families healthy here at home, and improves economic stability around the world. The AAP supports global efforts to improve vaccine access, introduce new vaccines, and achieve polio and measles eradication. The AAP is a founding partner of the UN Foundation s Shot@Life Campaign, and is committed to mobilizing pediatric leaders to support and accelerate vaccine access goals. Working with Shot@Life provides pediatricians the opportunity to talk about the critical role of vaccines in saving and improving the lives of children around the world. AAP provides accurate technical health information to the campaign, spreads the message that all kids deserve a shot at life, and offers resources to help pediatricians educate about the importance of international vaccine-prevention programs. The AAP and Shot@Life believe there is an opportunity to educate Americans about global vaccines at a critical moment: in the pediatrician s office while parents are getting their own children vaccinated. Page 1
While we understand the constraints during busy office visits, these tools have been developed to help you and your staff educate families without a big investment of time or resources. More than 30 practices piloted these materials, and they are now ready to be used at a larger scale. HOW CAN MY PRACTICE BE INVOLVED? If you are interested, please follow this link to sign up! Your practice will play a key role in educating and raising awareness among patients by distributing educational materials and providing information where appropriate. Specifically, we ask that when giving vaccinations, you use the Shot@Life adhesive bandages and suggest to parents that they may want to learn more about Shot@Life. We understand that sometimes you may give multiple vaccines or would prefer to use other bandages, if this is the case, you can give the child/parent a Shot@Life bandage to take home with them. We also provide you with talking points to use when you have time and if you choose to engage in discussion with families about global immunizations. WHAT ARE THE MATERIALS AND HOW CAN THEY BE USED? Feel free to implement these materials in whatever way works best for you and your practice. Materials will be sent to you in a toolkit and you will receive some of everything. If you wish to add on a fundraising toolkit, ask for one during your on-line sign up. Packages will come via US postal service. Below is an overview of the materials and examples of how they might be used. 1. POSTERS We have designed a doubled sided poster. One side gives more information on vaccine preventable diseases and the other side focuses on overarching global issue and Shot@Life. You can choose to display only one side or display both sides. These are great for patient waiting areas, hallways, vaccination areas, and patient rooms. Page 2
2. INFO CARDS We have designed two different information cards. One is geared towards teenagers who may want to take action. It encourages them to use social media to spread vaccine advocacy messages and gives them factoids about vaccine preventable diseases. The second card is for younger children. The front of the card appeals to parents, while the back has a simple maze that children can work on while waiting. These cards can be used at your sign-in or registration areas, or in the waiting room on tables. Some of the pilot sites designated specific days for their offices to actively pass these out to patients and parents. If you have rooms specifically for adolescents, the teenager cards can go there. (Left) Parent and Child card; (Below) Teenager card Front Back Front Back 3. MOBILE APP CARD Shot@Life and the AAP have launched a free smartphone or handheld mobile app that parents can use to celebrate their children's developmental milestones. It's a great way to document those big moments and to make sure kids are developing on track. It's also a great way for parents to support kids in the developing world, for whom every birthday is an achievement. We encourage you to have these small cards available in patient rooms and at new baby visits and/or in the waiting room area. Page 3
4. BANDAGES While vaccinating children in your office, we hope you can utilize these unique bandages. The bandages have a website address which can help families learn more about global vaccines and the campaign. We think this may be a good way to encourage staff to talk about Shot@Life while vaccinating children. During the pilot, some expressed concern about the type of bandage and its ease of use. We hope a certain company might provide a different type at a later date; however, until then, if these bandages are not useful for putting on kids, we encourage you to give these as stickers during vaccination visits as they are still good for sparking a short discussion about how and where to learn about global vaccines with patients and parents. 5. PENS AND TSHIRTS We are able to supply your practice with limited numbers of pens and t-shirts. Some practices have given them to staff or used them as prizes. You can also order more t-shirts by contacting Ms. Kiran Patel (information below) for a donation of $20 for one t-shirt or $50 for three. We have been told staff loved wearing these on Casual Fridays! 6. MEDIA PIN DRIVE The thumb drive contains short Shot@Life videos that can be shown in the waiting room or on office computers. Page 4
7. OPTIONAL FUNDRAISING ADD-ON TOOL KIT Some practices have asked us if they can raise funds for global vaccines in their office. We understand that many practices do not want to do fundraising and that is why we are offering the fundraising tool kit is an optional add-on. The fundraising kit includes a donation box, a poster to track fundraising with sticky notes for those who donate to write what they want to give a child a shot at, and a fundraising guide. We recommended picking a week, month, or season for your fundraising activities. WHAT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS? Please feel free to ask us about any and all questions you might have. You can call or Ms. Kiran Patel, Manager, Global Child Health Programs (kpatel@aap.org). Page 5
