1 Complete Childminding Learning Pathway National Work-based Award Presented by Caroline McGrory Training Manager, SCMA SCMA is the voice of childminding in Scotland. Our key priority areas are:

2 Introduction to SCMA Scottish Childminding Association (SCMA) is the only organisation dedicated to supporting childminding in Scotland and the majority of our services are available to all childminders. Our aim is to promote childminding as a quality childcare service; helping childminders to be the best they can be. Over 83% of Scotland s childminders are members of SCMA. We provide access to training and learning opportunities, regular news and updates, on-going professional guidance, and business support. Our vision is: Quality Childminding... building confident children within a family childcare experience SCOTTISH CHILDMINDING ASSOCIATION Making a difference to childminding in Scotland

3 Working in Partnership SCMA has worked in partnership with the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) to develop the Complete Childminding Learning Pathway (CCLP) National Work-based Award. The Award: Recognises and values the unique form of early learning and childcare provided by Establishes a learning and development pathway that supports childminders throughout all stages of their professional growth. Supports the commitment of the Scottish Government in the Blueprint Action Plan to help secure a role for childminders, allowing them to gain accreditation for their prior learning Shows childminders how they can develop their service. Encourages reflective practice. Enhances professional learning and development. The official launch took place in April 2018

4 Professional Growth The CCLP National Work-based Award will help the learner develop their childminding practice and enable the development of their early years and childcare provision. They will also learn to link theory into practice in their childminding setting. The learner should be able to: Show that they have knowledge and or experience in working with children in a childminding setting. Know and understand theory and legislation in relation to early years and childcare, and the impact this has on practice. Become familiar with current legislation, frameworks, and guidance in relation to early years learning and childcare. Entry is at the discretion of the centre.

5 Knowledge assessment The Complete Childminding Learning Pathway National Work-based Award is made up of six Units. All Units will be holistically assessed. Accordingly, some of the knowledge tasks and practical tasks will link to several of the units Learners will have to: Demonstrate their knowledge and understanding to agreed standards. Carry out assessments in relation to the performance criteria as they progress through the learning programme, and the evidence they submit will be assessed by the Assessor. Be given regular feedback while undertaking the assessments. Demonstrate the underpinning knowledge needed to deal with any problems and variations that may occur during practical work. This will take the form of a knowledge assessment (known as Knowledge Evidence) and will also be assessed by the Assessor.

6 Six Work-based Units The Complete Childminding Learning Pathway is open to anyone in childminding and consists of six Work-based Units which, when successfully completed, combine to achieve the Award. The six Units are: Unit 1: Ready for Childminding Business Unit 2: Child Development; The Carer s Role Unit 3: Getting it Right for Every Child in a Childcare Setting Unit 4: Quality of Childcare Progression Unit 5: Planning for Inspection Unit 6: Professional Childcare Service Development Accordingly, some of the knowledge tasks and practical tasks will link to several of the units

7 Progression Learners may progress to: An SVQ in Social Services (Children and Young People) at SCQF level 7, or An HNC in Childhood Practice at SCQF Level 7.

8 Key Steps Interested learners should: 1. Contact the Learn with SCMA team to discuss their learning needs. 2. Apply for an ITA through My World of Work. If not eligible then there is also the option to self-pay using a credit or debit card. 3. Complete all Continuous Professional Learning Courses within a Unit. Gain an Open Badge for every course successfully completed. 4. Compile and submit a Personal Portfolio to be assessed by an Assessor. Support is provided to learners throughout the completion of their portfolio. 5. Learners achieve a Unit and a SQA certificate once all performance criteria has been met, and will gain twocredit value, equivalent to 20 hours of learning. 6. Complete all six Units to achieve the Complete Childminding Learning Pathway - a Work Based Award. KEY STEPS TO ACHIEVING THE WORK BASED UNIT The award establishes a learning and development pathway that takes a potential childminder from induction to career professional.

9 Open Badges SCMA has partnered with the Scottish Social Service Council to provide SCMA Accredited Open Badges. Open badges: Are digital records of achievements and skills. Link to assessment and evidence. Recognise both formal and informal learning. Give tangible value to the reflection put into learning from different sources. SCMA ACCREDITED OPEN BADGES Open Badges are digital records of accomplishment, skills, qualities or interests connected across formal and informal learning.
