In Our Own Words At Wyndham House, we understand that housing means far more than a roof overhead or a place to eat a meal. For us, it means a space where youth are empowered to develop skills, make impactful decisions, contribute to their community, forge their identity and ultimately reach their full potential. In order to foster this philosophy, Wyndham House offers a variety of programs that ensure all youth, regardless of where they are at in life are given the opportunity to make healthy decisions and bring greater stability to their lives. Contact us at: Tel:(519) info@wyndhamhouse.org Website: Mailing Address P.O Box 1898 Stn. Main Guelph, Ontario N1H 7A1 My life before coming to Wyndham House was simple, I only had to do a few chores a day then I could go back to my room. I was living with my step family and I lived out in the country. I found out about Wyndham House the day that I arrived, I didn t know that I was coming here. It was quite scary as I didn t know how people would react and I didn t know if they did drugs or not. I kept to myself in my room, as I felt scared to interact with others. While living at Wyndham House, my perception of the people in the house and what the staff does has changed. I understand the motives of the other guys in the house, and I feel more comfortable picking who I talk to because of that. My perception of the staff has changed, it used to feel like an orphanage or school guidance, and they were trying to get rid of us. I now see that staff are more compassionate and take the time to understand everyone s different quirks. Living with a group of guys has made me understand that some clients could use a bit more help, I feel like if they were to be out on their own, they wouldn t be able to sustain themselves. I d prefer to be living with a smaller group of guys, as I get nervous in large groups. I go to school, and I would not be going to school if I were not staying here, as I don t feel like it's necessary. I have been living here for almost a year, and there are some benefits of living here. I get bus passes; dinner is made for me, Wi-Fi is available and having the staff here to help me when I need to talk or just to hang out. My plan in the long term is to get a job and live a healthy life. I want to enter the workforce in a job that would be able to sustain myself.
Friends of Wyndham House THANK YOU! A big thank you to the 5 Days for Homeless Campaign for raising over $5,000 for Wyndham House! As part of the Push for Change Campaign, The Bishop Macdonell High School donated an entire shopping cart full of clothing and toiletry items. The Guelph Youth Council held a Hot Chocolate Fundraiser on Family Day. They were able to raise more than $350 to support Wyndham House. Throughout the months of February and March, Wyndham House held The Wyndham House Escape Room Challenge and Dinner series. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported Wyndham House. They say a person needs just three things to be truly happy in this world: someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for. -Tom Bodett
Wyndham House News The Push for Change in Guelph Orange Door Award The Push for Change Campaign came to Guelph on December 20th and left on the 23rd. Throughout those short four days, Joe Roberts was able to bring awareness to the issue of youth homelessness to our community. The Push for Change Guelph Committee was able to raise $18,645.66, half of which stayed in our local community and helped Wyndham House to support homeless youth in Guelph/Wellington. Thank you to the Push for Change Campaign, QCCC and our local community partners for supporting homeless youth in Guelph/Wellington. Five Days for the Homeless Campaign The University of Guelph s 5 Days for the Homeless 2017 campaign is the 8th year in a row students have volunteered to sleep outside for five nights in order to bring awareness to homelessness and to raise donations to support youth that use Wyndham House supports and services. This year s campaign was able to raise $5,040 in support of our Long Term Transitional Housing Program. Wyndham House was honoured to receive a $25,000 Orange Door Award from The Home Depot Foundation Canada for our Support Through Engagement in Programming and Sports Program (STEPS). Wyndham House was one of only eight organizations in Canada to receive an Orange Door Award this year. STEPS uses recreation and sport as a catalyst for change, providing high quality recreation and leisure programming for those otherwise unable to access these opportunities. Whether exploring new recreational pursuits or reconnecting with previously enjoyed activities, participants are connecting with each other, with supports, and with their community through positive pro-social activities. The STEPS service model acts as a non-traditional link to social services for those in need and unable/unwilling to access services through conventional paths. With this generous funding from The Home Depot Canada Foundation, Wyndham House will be able to continue to run the STEPS program and provide youth in our Long Term homes an opportunity to participate in high quality recreation activities. A big thank you to The Home Depot Canada Foundation for their continued support of the homeless and at-risk youth in our community! Life's under no obligation to give us what we expect. -Margaret Mitchell
Wyndham House News Housing First for Youth Source: Gaetz, Stephen. (2014). A Safe and Decent Place to Live: Towards a Housing First Framework for Youth. Toronto: Canadian Observatory on Homelessness The Housing First for Youth program is designed as a practical solution to end youth homelessness by supporting youth to find stable housing while ensuring they get the wrap-around supports they need to stay housed. Here at Wyndham House we have a dedicated Housing First Worker that provides a variety of services to youth including: - Individualized case management -Assistance in budgeting and household management - Tenant Education Here at Wyndham House, we were sad to hear that Janet Bennett, a dedicated longtime supporter has passed away. Janet was truly a civic minded and upstanding model citizen who cared deeply for the homeless youth in our community. Janet s last contribution to Wyndham House allowed us to provide tuition support to a past resident of Wyndham House s Long Term Program. These funds allowed the youth to stay in school and continue to work towards his university degree. Without Janet s contribution, the youth would have been forced to leave school. Janet s generous gift will continue to make an impact on the homeless youth in Guelph/Wellington for years to come. Janet s loss is deeply felt throughout Wyndham House. The Orange Door Project Each year, The Home Depot Canada Foundation holds a national in-store fundraising campaign during which customers are invited to make a $2 donation in support of a local charity. Administration Office The Administration Office has moved into a brand new location. You can now find us at 311 Woolwich Street Unit C. Our telephone number and mailing address has not changed. Feel free to stop by, check out our new space and say hello! The 2017 campaign will take place from Thursday, June 1st to Sunday, July 2nd and all the proceeds will go towards preventing and ending youth homelessness. We are happy to announce that The Guelph Home Depot Store s proceeds for the 2017 campaign will be going to Wyndham House! Should you need home repair or gardening materials during those weeks please consider shopping at Home Depot and making a contribution. Youth Resource Centre The Youth Resource Centre will be moving to 133 Woolwich Street in June. The telephone number for the Centre will not change. Courage isn't having the strength to go on - it is going on when you don't have strength. -Napoléon Bonaparte
Ways to Support Wyndham House Sending Words of Encouragement Raise money for Wyndham House simply by purchasing gift cards at face value! Fundscrip is an innovative program that earns cash rebates for Wyndham House based on things you buy everyday like groceries, gas and other household items. Every month you spend hundreds of dollars for things like food, gas, clothing, pharmacy, restaurants, electronics, home renovations, department stores, and so on. All you have to do is pay for some or all of your purchases using GIFT CARDS bought at face value from FundScrip participating retailers and a percentage of every gift card purchased directly contributes to Wyndham House s fundraising efforts. You can purchase your gift cards online by visiting You are valuable We believe in you There are people that care about you You are not alone These simple words can mean so much to youth that often feel invisible and unloved. In this newsletter we have included a blank note card. Please consider taking the time to write and send a small note of encouragement to one of the youth staying in our care. Did you know. 80% of youth staying in our Long Term Program left home because of family breakdown, abuse or neglect. 53% of homeless youth have mental health issues To purchase your gift cards by cash or cheque please contact Margaret Bain at (519) or margaret@wyndhamhouse.org for a paper order form. A failure is not always a mistake. It may simply be the best one can do under the circumstances. The real mistake is to stop trying. -B. F. Skinner
Request for Donations Wyndham House has been working with youth for over 40 years and we believe that providing opportunities for youth continues to be just as important today as it ever was.
