KAPPA ALPHA PSI Accreditation Report Intellectual Development Kappa Alpha Psi was ranked second among the Multicultural Greek Council Chapters in the fall 2010 semester with a GPA of 1.615, a decrease of from the spring 2010 semester. The GPA placed the chapter below All Greek, All Men, All Fraternity and All Undergraduate averages. Kappa Alpha Psi was ranked second among the Multicultural Greek Council Chapters in the spring 2011 semester with a GPA of 1.45, a decrease of from the fall 2010 semester. The GPA placed the chapter below the All Greek, All Men, All Fraternity and All Undergraduate averages. The chapter held a healthy relationships program during their fall Kappa Week as a continuation of programming conducted in The chapter is also considering hosting an eating disorder awareness workshop. The committee commends membership for their follow-up. The chapter co-sponsored an academic excellence workshop with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the Center of Academic Success and discussed hosting a retention related program. The committee would like to continue to see the chapter advertise initiatives such as these to interested potential members. Kappa Alpha Psi held a discussion with the Black Student Union (BSU) on the adjustments faced by minority students when attending a predominately white institution. Kappa Alpha Psi has an alumni academic support group, but the committee would like to see the chapter formalize the structure to benefit from volunteer knowledge, time and talent. The Center of Academic Success would serve as a great resource for the chapter. The committee would like to see Kappa Alpha Psi appropriately balance their academic responsibilities with chapter activities, as members are at Lehigh University to be students first. This should be a primary focus area for the chapter during the upcoming school year. Kappa Alpha Psi members are aware of the academic resources available to them, but the committee would like to see the chapter re-visit their scholarship plan to ensure that their determined priorities are consistently implemented into their chapter operations to promote academic success. A consistent academic plan should be developed. While the intellectual development activities the chapter has instituted are commendable, the GPA of Kappa Alpha Psi cannot be ignored. Knowing the time constraints already placed on the membership by both Kappa Alpha Psi and other Lehigh and personal commitments, it would be irresponsible if the committee did not note their worry about the negative trending of the chapter s GPA. This is something that cannot continue. How does Kappa Alpha Psi scale back organizational commitments until chapter members are at a place where academics can be given the priority and support that is needed to be successful?
In the area of Intellectual Development, the committee rated Kappa Alpha Psi to be an Unacceptable Chapter. Leadership Development Kappa Alpha Psi was very involved in the conversations held at Multicultural Greek Council meetings and the council s leadership, as Tennyson Hinds served as the Treasurer. The chapter continues to emphasize relationships and communication to build all the organizations under the council. The committee commends Kappa Alpha Psi for their active participation in this past fall s Greek Week, knowing that the size of the chapter makes attendance difficult. Kappa Alpha Psi was involved in the LeHIgh Initiative, especially the chapter s senior president Karl Brisseaux. Chapter president Karl Brisseaux served as a keynote speaker during Lehigh University s Founder s Day events during the fall semester. The chapter attended the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Convention. The committee would like to see membership implement the lessons learned to improve chapter operations and prioritization. The committee would like to see Kappa Alpha Psi members apply what they learned at a recent Values Institute experience to their chapter experience at Lehigh University. The chapter sent members to their C. Roger Wilson National Leadership Conference and the 82 nd Province Council, as this is where the new members were initiated and crossed over. The committee commends the chapter for their continued participation with Headquarters based programming. The committee would like to see Kappa Alpha Psi continue to review their new member education plan to ensure that the academic success of their members is the primary concern of the program. Individual members expressed their comfort in confronting other members, but the committee would like to see the chapter have an educational dialogue on the importance of confrontation when member actions do not meet Kappa Alpha Psi priorities. The Offices of Student Leadership Development and Fraternity and Sorority Affairs would serve as great resources. How is dialogue about balance of chapter members with personal, academic, and organizational needs something that the chapter makes a priority for ? How do the alumni of the chapter support and hold chapter members accountable for this dialogue? In the area of Leadership Development, the committee rated Kappa Alpha Psi to be a Bronze Chapter. Community Development Kappa Alpha Psi conducted programming such as a free campus wide Sexual Transmitted Infection screening; a program focused on the seven deadly sins; as well as a co-sponsored black affair event with Lambda Sigma Upsilon and Omega Psi Phi during the organization s Kappa Week.
The chapter was involved with the Multicultural Greek Council s Stroll at Dancefest. Kappa Alpha Psi once again held their annual White Party social event with Sigma Phi Epsilon. This year s Krimson and Kreame Ball involved a partnership with the Schools 4 Schools student organization to raise funds for children in Uganda and for the fraternity s Adopt-a-Family funds. The committee commends the chapter for changing the purpose of the Krimson and Kreame Ball every year based on what the chapter feels needs to be addressed most. The chapter continues to excel at developing partnerships with departments and organizations that extend beyond a single event. Examples of these relationships include the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the Black Student Union (BSU). Kappa Alpha Psi continued their invested relationship with the STRIVE after school mentoring Program by volunteering their time on a weekly basis. Kappa Alpha Psi s community service and philanthropy involvement has always been a priority for the chapter. The committee commends the chapter for their continued dedication to service, as the organization has impacted the campus and local community. The committee would like to see Kappa Alpha Psi submit their community service and philanthropy reporting forms through the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs website. Kappa Alpha Psi did not have any conduct violations this past year. Greg Anderson, a recent alumnus, served as the Vice President for Multicultural Greek Organizations on the Greek Alumni Council this past year. The committee would like to see Kappa Alpha Psi s engagement in the Greek Alumni Council continue to grow in the upcoming year. The committee believes that Kappa Alpha Psi s relationships with alumni have always been strong and helpful, especially with those that are currently enrolled in graduate school at Lehigh University. Many of these alumni will be leaving the Bethlehem area soon and the committee would like to see the chapter think about how they can utilize their local province for support. Kappa Alpha Psi continues to embody and support community wide diversity and pluralism programming, as this is an area of development that the chapter has continued to do well in over the years. How does the chapter continue to create streamlined programming opportunities with existing partnerships, while identifying and letting go of less successful partnerships? In the area of Community Development, the committee rated Kappa Alpha Psi to be a Gold Chapter. Organizational Development Kappa Alpha Psi leadership participated in the Everquest leadership program during a Multicultural Greek Council retreat. The committee would like to see membership implement the lessons learned to their chapter operations.
Kappa Alpha Psi has increased their use of social media to market their events and organization, as the chapter now has active twitter account and website. The committee would like to see chapter leadership evaluate their membership intake plan to ensure that it allows time for aspirants to complete their academic responsibilities. Kappa Alpha Psi now has a scholarship fund through a grant by alumnus Terry Williams Kappa Alpha Psi is in good financial standing, but the committee would like to encourage the chapter to continue to plan ahead when it comes to raising or accessing available funds. The chapter should work with the Offices of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs and Student Leadership Development to develop a formalized leadership transition process. The organization should consider utilizing their local alumni as part of a mentorship program. The chapter has a new staff advisor, Cleveland McCray, an Academic Services Manager at Lehigh University. The committee would like to see Kappa Alpha Psi work with their advisor to develop goals and expectations of another during the upcoming year. This will be a great resource for the men of the chapter. Kappa Alpha Psi was not able to articulate what changed this past year. The committee would like to see Kappa Alpha Psi set intentional goals and action steps that help the organization evaluate structure and programming. The chapter struggled with action planning and follow through this past year. Chapter leadership struggled to put together their Accreditation materials, as the packet and presentation were completed late. The chapter had a member who struggled to find a balance between extracurricular involvement and academic responsibilities this past year. The committee would like to see membership stay committed and diligent to their priorities during the upcoming academic year. Kappa Alpha Psi leadership should remain in constant communication with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs. How can Kappa Alpha Psi organize and utilize staffing and volunteer resources available to them in order to create successful support processes? In the area of Organizational Development, the committee rated Kappa Alpha Psi to be a Poor Chapter. Overall Rating Overall, Kappa Alpha Psi has been rated a Bronze chapter by the Accreditation Committee. The chapter went through a transition period this year where they had new chapter members stepping up to take in the lead. It is fair to say that the chapter needs to think about what this affect has on them as students both personally and academically. The chapter needs to make sure that they are putting themselves and their academics first and the chapter second. This is something that they have achieved in the past but struggled with this year. Knowing this is the first year that they ve struggled, the committee is confident that Kappa Alpha Psi can turn things around and make the change. In order to do so, the chapter must build relationships with the volunteers and staff members at their disposal.
The committee has assigned Kappa Alpha Psi an overall rating of Bronze Chapter, which is considered solid level of achievement in the Accreditation process, with all the privileges and rewards that accompany such a rating. Recommendations The chapter co-sponsored an academic excellence workshop with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the Center of Academic Success and discussed hosting a retention related program. The committee would like to continue to see the chapter advertise initiatives such as these to interested potential members. Individual members expressed their comfort in confronting other members, but the committee would like to see the chapter have an educational dialogue on the importance of confrontation when member actions do not meet Kappa Alpha Psi priorities. The Office of Student Leadership Development and the chapter s Greek Life Coordinator would serve as great resources The committee would like to see Kappa Alpha Psi submit their community service and philanthropy reporting forms through the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs website. The committee believes that Kappa Alpha Psi s relationships with alumni have always been strong and helpful, especially with those that are currently enrolled in graduate school at Lehigh University. The committee would like to see membership implement the lessons learned to their chapter operations.
Kappa Alpha Psi is in good financial standing, but the committee would like to encourage the chapter to continue to plan ahead when it comes to raising or accessing available funds. The chapter should work with their Greek Life Coordinator and the Office of Student Leadership Development to develop a formalized leadership transition process. The organization should consider utilizing their local alumni as part of a mentorship program. The chapter has a new faculty/staff advisor, Cleveland McCray, an Academic Services Manager at Lehigh University. The committee would like to see Kappa Alpha Psi work with their faculty/staff advisor to develop goals and expectations of another during the upcoming year. This will be a great resource for the men of the chapter. Kappa Alpha Psi was not able to articulate what changed this past year. The committee would like to see Kappa Alpha Psi set intentional goals and action steps that help the organization evaluate structure and programming. The committee would like to see membership stay committed and diligent to their priorities during the upcoming academic year. Kappa Alpha Psi leadership should remain in constant communication with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs. Best Practices The committee commends the chapter for their continued dedication to service, as the organization has impacted the campus and local community. Developing partnerships with departments and organizations that extend beyond a single event have never been an issue for Kappa Alpha Psi, as relationships include ones with National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the Black Student Union (BSU).
