2 2014 Relay For Life of Weston/Westport WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! We invite you to be a part of an important tradition in the West Hartford community The 2014 American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Weston/Westport. The Relay is a meaningful way to raise money and awareness of cancer, and bring together the entire community to celebrate those who have survived cancer and to remember those no longer with us due to this disease. The American Cancer Society is proud to present the 2014 Relay For Life of Weston/Westport an overnight walk to fight cancer. This year s event will take place from 4 p.m. Friday, May 17, and will conclude at 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 18. We expect to have at least 50 teams made up of 10 to 15 participants representing businesses, civic groups, churches, schools, friends and families. The Relay is a memorable community celebration attended by hundreds of people from all over the community. Teams set up and decorate tents and campsites for an overnight stay at Weston High School and participants take turns walking for the fight against cancer. Local cancer survivors begin the Relay with a Survivors Celebration Lap, and all participants enjoy entertainment, food, music, games, sports, and camaraderie. At dusk, all gather to light candles in a moving ceremony that touches the hearts with a magic that is the American Cancer Society s Relay For Life of Weston/Westport. There are many opportunities and levels of support for you to consider by being part of this year s Relay that will help you participate in your community and promote your business. By becoming a sponsor and/or forming a team, you will help us reach our local goal of $147,000 in the fight against Cancer. 3 Dear Respected Reader, It is very likely that you, a family member, a friend, or a co-worker has been touched by cancer. This is the reason we invite your company and employees to support an event that raises awareness and dollars for the fight against cancer. Locally, the American Cancer Society s annual Relay for Life of Weston/Westport will be held at Weston High School May 17 May 18, The Relay for Life is an overnight event where teams from businesses, schools, and neighborhoods take turns walking around the track. The dollars raised through Relay for Life fund the American Cancer Society s vital cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient service programs to defeat this disease. Last year, the Relay raised more than $140,000 and included 65 teams, 103 local cancer survivors, and hundreds of Luminaria bags. The Luminaria bags are candles lit to honor community members we ve lost to cancer, and honor those battling the disease. Each Luminaria bag represented a $5 donation, but the emotional impact was worth far more. This year, we re striving to increase community participation and funds raised to help eliminate cancer in our lifetime. We need the help of local businesses to reach our goal. When you support our event, you become part of a network of people who are committed to eliminating cancer. You help us fund pioneering cancer research that leads to lifesaving discoveries. You empower us to share cancer knowledge and resources with people wherever they are including in your own community!
