9 What we need Good Policy for Health (Sen 2010) is required Policy across all areas needs to be aligned to promote health Example: 3 key principles for improving CYP MH in schools an colleges School performance performance measures that are toxic
10 Policy and Politics We need an approach that includes and addresses the needs of 0-25 year olds. This should prioritise: Prevention of MH problems among infants, children, young people and families is essential if we are ever to reduce demand. This includes a universal, as well as a targeted approach for those living with and in the most challenging circumstances. Prevention should also be at the heart of providing mental health interventions to those in need by ensuring prompt and easy to access help and good quality step down care
11 Policy and Politics A re-balancing of current and future investment in favour of early intervention. We need bolder approaches to moving funding towards accessible, high quality, person-centred, early intervention in local community, including education settings. It means integrating NHS staff in other settings, as well as commissioning the VCS to deliver services. It also includes more joint commissioning with schools and local authorities.
12 Policy and Politics Everyone having the qualities, skills and confidence to recognise and address the mental health needs of infants, children and young people - We need an overarching workforce plan that includes not just NHS staff roles, but anyone who works directly with ICYPF. It must also recognise and include parents/carers and peer support. Workforce shortages could be eased by employing a more diverse range of therapeutically trained staff in NHS-funded services. We have an underused workforce of counsellors, creative and play therapists. Diversifying the workforce needs to be underpinned by a nationally agreed competency framework to allow better understanding of how different roles, training and qualification routes work together in the best interests on ICYPF.

15 Rights Based Approach What the coalition and CYP want Justice for Children and Families FAIRNESS A fair distribution of resources and burdens within communities so that every child and family gets the best possible chance to develop their potential PROTECTION Resources for families, neighbourhoods, schools and other agencies to help them protect and encourage their children alongside the means to intervene when these layers of protection fail AUTONOMY Encouraging children s voice and participation making it a level commensurate with their maturity This aligns with VALUES BASED PRACTICE Choosing Wisely UK and shared decision making
