2 LIONS OF MICHIGAN MULTIPLE DISTRICT 11 96th ANNUAL STATE CONVENTION Wyndham Gardens Hotel, Sterling Heights, MI May 13-14, 2016 REGISTRATION TOTALS Lions 195 Lioness 4 Guests 4 Total 203 Representing 68 Lions Clubs and 1 Lioness Club PRE-CONVENTION PICNIC Thursday, May 12, 2016 Sterling Heights Lions Clubhouse What began four years ago as a means to connect Lions, guests, and, when available, the International Guest Speaker in a casual environment for the purpose of socializing before the start of the convention. There were approximately 103 in attendance for a picnic-style meal catered by The Pantry Restaurant. Members of the SHLC hosted this event from set-up to clean-up. FRIDAY DINNER & ENTERTAINMENT May 13, :00 p.m. Governor Jeff Mayuiers, 11 B2, MC Governor Russ Amaidon, 11 C2, MC The Welcome Reception on Friday night featured a Motown theme complete with decorations, a 1966 restored Chevy on display and a 7-member band from Indiana, The Spaniels. Dean Martin and two Marilyn Monroe impersonators completed the theme. The menu was fashioned after a traditional TV dinner from the 60 s, consisting of meatloaf, roast turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes and corn. 165 Lions and guests participated in an evening of fun and fellowship.

3 AWARDS BREAKFAST May 14, :30 a.m. Governor Peggy Allen, 11 B1 Governor Sharon Jordan-Crowley, 11 A2 The breakfast was attended by 162 people. Club presidents, first-time convention attendees, Key Members and Melvin Jones Fellows were recognized. Award Presentations The following awards and recognitions were awarded: Roger LaMothe Award to District Editor, James Leach, Sr Net Growth Award, District 11 A2 Biggest Little Club Membership Growth Award, 11 A1 Pride Membership Growth Award, 11 B2 Goliath Membership Growth Award, 11 A2 FDI Faculty Development Award: PDG Barry Allen, 11 B1; PDG Norm Stutesman, 11 B2; PDG Diane Wehby, 11 C1; DGE Lloyd Foster, 11 C1. At the close of the Awards Breakfast, the Lions of Michigan Foundation held the drawing for the 30 th Annual Sight & Hearing Sweepstakes. Business Session Call to Order Vice Council Chair Justin Faber called the meeting to order and introduced the parliamentarian, PID Dennis Cobler. Adoption of the Rules MOTION made and seconded, to adopt the proposed Rules as printed in the convention program. Motion carried. Preliminary Credentials Report PDG Tony Capozzo A review of registrations and credentials as of 11:00 a.m. found 195 Lions, 4 Lioness, 4 guests representing 68 Lions Clubs and 1 Lioness. Public Relations Centennial Campaign Lion Laura Hunt, Chair Lion Laura Hunt reported on the Centennial Billboard and Media Campaign. The Centennial Grant through LCI was approved for $15, Donations from Lions Clubs have totaled over $9,000, with a goal of raising $20, from Lions Clubs in the state. The Council of Governors voted to include media in the campaign, allowing for broader coverage than just billboards. Additional media to be added will be:

4 Radio Transportation (mobile busses) Television Pop-up web advertising Digital advertising Centennial Celebration Report PDG Diane Wehby, Chair The Centennial Celebration involves many areas of service, including Youth, Vision, Feeding Hungry and our Environment. MD 11 has already reported 20,000 people served in these particular areas of concern this year, with a growth of 50% over last year at this time. Centennial Legacy Projects are visible gifts to your community that commemorate our Centennial and create a lasting legacy of your service contributions. 18 Clubs have logged a Legacy Project with LCI. Part II of the Centennial Celebration: Invite Others to Serve. One active Lion =50 individuals served. Treasurer s Report - PCC Paul Hemeryck, State Treasurer The financial report covers the first10 months of the fiscal year from July 1, 2015 through April 30, At that point in time, the bottom line looked good. However, it was inflated because money had been collected, but expenses won t be incurred until May or June particularly expenses related to the MD Convention and the International Convention. Page 1 is a summary of income and expenses for all accounts administered by the Lions of Michigan. Accounts listed in bold print are dues-funded. The report shows the beginning balances, what was received in dues and other revenues, what was paid in expenses, and the ending balances. Also listed is a summary of the activities for the Lion Pride Magazine, which is a separate corporation.

MD 11 State Projects Lions Bear Lake Camp Dennis Tomkins, Director For 36 years, Lions Bear Lake Camp has provided the camp experience for students with Autism, visual and hearing impairments, to name a few. 509 campers were served in In the months of April October the camp hosted many schools and community groups, serving 430 people. The

10 challenge course and climbing tower are popular with groups outside of the campers who utilize the facility for team-building events. Volunteers are always needed for camp clean-up and maintenance. Special volunteer work days help save approximately $10, per year. During the year, Michigan Lions donated $174, in funds to the camp. Leader Dogs for the Blind Susan Daniels, CEO Leader Dog and Lions have been partners for 77 years. This past year, Lions funded $2.4 million dollars to the Canine Development Center, in addition to their annual giving. With over 1,616 Lions Clubs contributing to the $14.5 million goal, Michigan Lions were at the top of the donations. The Canine Development Center project began four (4) years ago, and a sneakpreview was given on Friday to 80 Lions and guests attending the MD 11 Convention in Sterling Heights : 198 teams graduated, consisting of a blind client and a leader dog. There were 77 one-on-one trainings held at the facility. 19 students, aged 16-17, experienced Leader Dog Camp for Teens. 11 Deaf and blind clients were trained with dual Leader Dogs. Eversight - Alison Wright, Community Outreach Director Michigan now has 54% of adult drivers on the Donor registry, which translates to 4.2 million Michiganders. There were 1,427 transplants in Michigan and 1,868 donated corneas. Lion members and Lioness members helped to financially assist in providing sight for 1,333 people. The Mints for Military Program now includes military and veteran hospitals. Eversight continues to change the future of vision. Lions of Michigan Foundation Chad McCann, Executive Director The Lions of MI Foundation has received approval of a grant requested of LCIF in the amount of $48, to provide one half of the total project cost to obtain six fully equipped KidSight trailers and six new hand-held vision screening devices.

11 The 30 th Annual Sight & Hearing Sweepstakes raffle drawing was held at this morning s Awards Breakfast. This was the largest selling raffle to date with 1 st prize winner of $5, went to Ron Kerley. Bangor Lions Club sold the winning ticket. The Foundation will sponsor two cruises in 2017: Holland America Land and Sea Cruise, Alaska and Vancouver in June, 2017, and Royal Caribbean Southern Caribbean Cruise departing from San Juan, Puerto Rico, March State of the Lions Council Chair Linda Tate Bring Hope and Dignity through Service Centennial Service - The State s Public Relations committee has been doing a great job on the Centennial Billboard Project. LCI approved the $15,000 Centennial PR grant that was submitted. The PR Committee will be working to have billboards located throughout the state of Michigan. Children First-Lions of Michigan Foundations approved for a $48, grant from the Lions Clubs International Foundation will provide one half of the total project cost for us to purchase six fully equipped KidSight Trailers and six new hand-held vision screening devices. This equipment will enable us to identify and help many more children whose academic and social development is adversely affected due to an undetected vision disorder. Leader Dog for the Blind received a grant to assist in the renovation of the canine development center. Create Harmony through Effective Leadership Michigan Lions Forum, which has continues to show an increase in attendance every year and offers high-quality, informative breakout sessions led by leaders from our state. The T-shirts that were added this year were a great success. The Lions Leadership Institute continues to remain a vital part of training for Michigan Lions. The addition of the Master s Program in 2013 continues to grow, proving this to be another successful piece of the Leadership Institute. The dedication of Co-Chairs Paul Hemeryck, PCC and PID Bill Hansen along with the LI Team has contributed greatly to the success of this program. The USA/Canada Forum being in Grand Rapids Michigan last September was a great boost to the Michigan Lions and offered great sessions on becoming a leader in Lionism. The inaugural Lions University Graduation was held on

12 Friday, September 18, 2015 in the Amway Grand Hotel at the USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Lions University is offered by the USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum that provides year round Lion leadership training and allows Lions to receive Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate Program certificate. This a great resource for old and new lions to learn. Build Bridges for Humanity Peace Poster - MD Peace Poster winner Hamlin Park is a 6 th grader from Northville, MI competed against Approximately 400,000 children from 65 countries and was chosen as one of 23 merit award winners. LCIF - In the area of membership, there was a reported 269 activities; hours of service; people served. The state of Michigan is proud to support LCIF with 3738 Melvin Jones Fellows & 306 Progresses Melvin Jones Fellows. It s great to be a Lion and even greater to be a Lion of Michigan. Let s continue to SERVE. The Business Session came to a close with praise and encouragement from LCI guest speaker, ID Howard Hudson. Breakout Sessions Two (2) breakout sessions were held on the topics of the Centennial Billboard and Media Campaign, and the Centennial Celebration. Participants were provided in-depth details on these large-scale projects, set to occur over the next year. A special offering on Travel Tips to Japan was held with International Convention Chair, PDG Dennis Lautzenheiser moderating. Those planning to attend the LCI Con in Fukuoka, Japan, were given information on what to expect when traveling to Japan, provided mini-us flags for give-away along the parade route, and given a commemorative patch. Lion Jess Arnold and Lion Shirley Kelly, IC committee members, will be in Japan and together will oversee the parade line-up and any other necessary details. 96 th Annual Awards Banquet & Memorial Service Saturday, May 14, 2016 The evening began with a reception and concert by the Lions of Michigan All State Band. The band had their final rehearsal earlier in the day and took the time to perform before departing for home. A special guest performer was ID Howard Hudson, who played his trumpet along with the band.

13 Through the efforts of many, the LMASB inducted 26 members into the newly formed LMASB Leo Club. ID Hudson performed the induction with the Ashley Lions Club, 11 C2, as sponsor, and VDG Brent Beracy as Advisor. Director Hudson performed TAPS for the Memorial Service, remembering those who have passed this year. 180 attendees enjoyed dinner and dessert, followed by ID Hudson s address and recognition awards. Recipients of the S.A. Dodge Distinguished Service Award- PCC Donald Brown, 11-B2 PDG Karen Routson, 11 C-2 Recognition Awards Council Chair Linda Tate, for her service this year.
