2 Hi everyone The year got off to a roaring start (no pun intended.) The first three weeks in the month see an average three or four club visits in a week. Each club has its own little differences but when it comes down to it we are all there for the same reason, our community and our fellow man. August saw the first of our council meetings. Council is made up of all the District Governors (7) and is chaired by the Council Chairman (David McDonald) from Havelock North and our Executive Officer is the Secretary. We started on the Friday afternoon, all day Saturday and finished Sunday lunchtime. The District GMT and GLT had a meeting also in Wellington (with other from around NZ) but at another location which went well with a lot of ground being covered. The aim was to improve their effectiveness and common outcomes and results. As a result, a District meeting was held to formulate a three year plan forward for 202D. None of this would be possible if we did not have such a positive group of people in the District and I thank them for their dedication. Clubs undertaking the CEP will be better off for these training sessions. If you or your club have not done the CEP training, please consider it. What have you got to loose, NOTHING. It doesn t cost you anything but the results of doing the program will change your club for the better. It may be simply an improvement in the way we look at our club, how we do things or the way we treat each other??? During my visits I will endeavour to deliver chevrons to Club members for their membership to Lions. I would ask that when asked to host my visit that your club accepts the date given due to the number of visits scheduled. Otherwise it may be next year before I can get to your club and I do have a business to run in between visits. THANK YOU. If your club has a special event or function that they intend on inviting me I ask that you give me plenty of notice so that we can be there. September sees the visit to district 202M (Wellington) by the International President. He intends to visit some clubs and look at some projects. I did offer that he could join a club slink run for the morning but this was declined by 202M District Governor. I ask that you keep up the good work. I enjoy reading the club bulletins that I receive and would like to read more of them. ONLY if they were sent to me. Have another good month and remember to have FUN IN LIONS. DG ASH

6 Youth Report I have really enjoyed attending the first lot of Zone Meetings and getting to meet the new holders of the Youth Portfolios for their clubs. It is wonderful to hear about the great Youth Projects already completed such as sponsoring athletes for sports trips, ipads for deaf students and providing petrol vouchers for those children having to attend Starship. Keep up the great work of helping and supporting Youth in need in your Community. Please discuss with your clubs the possibility of reintroducing the 202D Youth Camp. This is looking at being held in Pohongina Valley in the second week of the first Terms holidays A van could be set up to transport attendees from the North of the District. Could you also please discuss the prospect of holding an International 202D Youth Camp in our District. Who would be keen and motivated to come on board with this project? Would some members of your club be able to help in some way? Please discuss these two concepts and /post your ideas and suggestions to me by end Sept. Many thanks. I was really pleased with the positive feedback that I received from our recent Host Families for our Finnish Students. It was great to hear about the positive experiences. Please discuss with your club about the possibility of the Club hosting in Dec this year! Make it a Club Project! 7 Highlights of the International Theme: Strengthen the Pride Part Two of this theme Strengthen the Pride through Membership Development Our focus is on service, but our strength is directly tied to our members. While we have been fortunate to sustain membership growth over the past six years, that growth must continue if we are to maintain our role as the global leader in humanitarian service. We can promote membership growth and development in the following ways: Ask One: Every Lion should invite at least one new member during the Lions year, and focus on pursuing those who demonstrate a desire to serve others. Tools, such as the Just Ask brochure, are available to support this effort. Set the Expectation: Clubs should prepare to welcome new members so that there is a timely club approval, meaningful induction, and a thorough new member orientation. The International President, district governors, past officers, and directors will expect to be included in inductions when ever possible. Every Club Needs A Plan: Clubs should create Membership Development and Leadership Development plans unique to their club and community Special Targeting: While we strive to grow in every demographic, members can be encouraged to focus on inviting women and younger people to join their clubs We Need More Clubs: Take advantage of extension tools and resources, including the assistance of Guiding Lions, to establish and develop new clubs. Rebuild Existing Clubs: Assign a Guiding Lion to work with clubs experiencing challenges to help them increase membership, develop better club operations and to expand service. Part Three next month

8 Back in June we gave your club some preliminary information about the Camp Quality Odd Shoe Day. This event is designed to generate much needed income and to raise awareness of the wonderful work that Camp Quality does to bring fun and happiness to the lives of children afflicted with cancer. Every year we run camps in various parts of New Zealand crammed with exciting activities which enable these young people to rediscover a childhood stolen by their illness and its associated treatments. These camps, which are fully funded and cost the participants not a cent, are eagerly awaited by the young people and their families. In order to continue providing this valuable service, our volunteers must raise around $700,000 annually. The on-going support from our Lions friends is very much appreciated and we look forward to it continuing into the future. Many Lions Clubs have already indicated their support for this year s event and we are very grateful for that. While 12th September is set to be our collection day we are encouraging schools, businesses and Lions Clubs to run events during September to raise funds to assist us to continue our camps for children living with cancer. Golf days, BBQ s, bowls, walka-thons, auctions, garage sales, or whatever inspires you are great ways to involve the public and raise some funds. Yes, participants can wear Odd Shoes to add to the fun. We will also be seeking assistance with collectors on Friday 12th September. So if you aren t able to run a fundraising project your members may wish to give a hand with this.
