1 Food for thought Hello! FALL 2016 This page is traditionally reserved for a story about the people we serve. We know that putting a face to the 47,000 people who are hungry in Boulder and Broomfield Counties can be a very powerful way to connect you to our work. We had spoken to a man earlier this month when he and his wife came to request food for the first time. They filled a cart and enrolled in our weekly Feeding Families program. As many visitors do, the man shared a bit about their situation. A member of the U.S. Armed Forces, he was preparing to leave in a few weeks for his next assignment. He was so grateful to hear that his family would receive the extra food they needed while he was away. His relief was visible. Moved by the story, we asked him if we could share it. He agreed, and as the interview drew near, he changed his mind. He was comfortable sharing his story with us, but he was just too nervous about sharing it publicly. We have other stories we could have substituted here, but as I thought about the situation, I felt it was important to talk about why there are so many stories we don t tell. For as many stories as we share, there are hundreds more that we are asked to keep anonymous. Quite often, the people we serve are too embarrassed or ashamed. Even when their situation is outside of their control, even when they are working hard but can t make ends meet, and even if it is a one-time visit to the food bank, they feel bad about needing help. When you walk away, food in hand, we do not want you to feel regret. We want you to feel the support and encouragement of your community, even if your story remains anonymous. 4 TIPS FOR CONDUCTING A SUCCESSFUL FOOD & FUND DRIVE Food and fund drives provide nutritious food and vital operating funds to Community Food Share, while raising awareness of hunger issues in our community. What to Collect We ll provide you with a list of our most-needed nonperishable food items. We also encourage you to collect funds as part of your drive, because for every $1 you raise, we provide 3 meals. We will happily track donations and report the total to you. NEW WEBSITE COMING JANUARY 2017 Community Food Share s website is receiving a makeover. Our hope is that the new website will offer an improved, more intuitive user experience that gets you the information you need quicker. We re recruiting Quality Control Volunteers to review the new site and provide feedback prior to the launch. 5 TEE UP! Against Hunger Golf Tournament $106,000 raised thanks to generous sponsors and attendees Our 27th annual golf tournament welcomed 30 foursomes to Coal Creek Golf Course on September 2nd. A sincere thank you to our title sponsor, Richmond American Homes, as well as the supporting sponsors, players, donors, and volunteers who helped make this festive event a success! Over the last 27 years, proceeds from this tournament have provided nearly 7 million meals to those in need in Boulder and Broomfield Counties! 6 FAMILY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES We are thrilled to welcome kids to Community Food Share, while offering you the opportunity to engage your children in hunger relief. Tasks typically include sorting and repackaging food donations. Age Eligibility Chaperone Requirements When 5 years and older. Children ages 5-14 must have an adult chaperone with them, at least 1 adult for every 3 children. Ongoing opportunities available on Tuesday evenings, 3:00-6:30 PM (drop-in). Shifts typically last 2 hours. How to Get Started New family volunteers must attend a 30-minute orientation, which is offered weekly on Mondays at 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. If you need to schedule an orientation outside these times, please call our office and speak with a member of our volunteer team. Once you ve attended an orientation, you re ready to drop-in on a Tuesday evening no registration required! Children as young as five are fighting hunger with Community Food Share. NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR REGISTERED VOLUNTEERS: SATURDAY SHIFTS Come sort food and bag produce at our warehouse, every third Saturday of the month, 9:00 AM-12:00 PM. Volunteers must sign up for shifts in advance at www. communityfoodshare.org/get-involved. Volunteer Spotlight Mike Diestel & Dean Turczyn Mike and Dean deliver boxes of fresh produce and pantry items to senior living communities as part of CFS s Elder Share program. They go the extra mile by delivering food directly to residents doors, and they are proud of the relationships they ve built. Mike says, I get a tremendous lift when I deliver food through Elder Share. The people recognize us, and it s so nice to see their faces light up when we arrive...we share conversation and exchange recipes. They show us their gardens and their photos. Mike and Dean, thank you for serving our senior clients with such compassion and commitment. 6

7 FAMILY VOLUNTEER DAYS DURING WINTER BREAK Tis the season to volunteer as a family! We re happy to offer additional family volunteer shifts while school s out. A FOND FAREWELL TO SUE ERICSON Sue pictured with previous CFS staff members, at our original office off of 55th Street in Boulder (circa 1999). In September, we celebrated the retirement of Sue Ericson, Community Food Share s longtime volunteer manager. After 24 years, there are countless memories and stories tied to the woman who represents the heart and soul of our volunteer department. Since she arrived in 1992, Sue has introduced thousands of volunteers and supporters to our mission, significantly increasing our capacity to distribute more food to those who need it. We thank her for the hard work and dedication she has shown this organization and the community as a whole. Sue s energy, enthusiasm, humor, and sass will be dearly missed by staff and volunteers alike, but we won t worry too much...she tells us she will be back as a volunteer! Thus far, Sue has settled in nicely to retirement, spending most days with her grandchildren, and she has been volunteering at a local church s food pantry. BioLife Plasma The team at BioLife Plasma Services is passionate about giving back to the community, and when they heard about CFS s need for volunteers, they immediately came to help. Our friends from BioLife are up for any task, whether sorting canned goods, packing orders for our Partner Agencies, or their favorite task sorting frozen meat! What do we REALLY love about them? They ve committed to volunteer with us every month. BioLife, we are so grateful for your ongoing support, and we hope you ll inspire other local businesses to join us as monthly group volunteers! 7

Last year, Colorado Gives Day raised more than $28 million for Colorado non-profits! Get Involved Donate at Donations made to Community Food Share on Colorado Gives Day qualify for a boost from the $1 Million Incentive Fund, thereby increasing the value of every dollar you donate.
