1 Pupil Voice Activities Autumn Term /19 School Council Attend Cluster Meeting The first School council cluster meeting took place at Immanuel and Saint Andrews on Thursday 8 th November. The meeting was led by WE and Team London, who encouraged the groups from six local schools to think about the issue of homelessness and share their ideas. They guided them through facts and asked them to think about the areas they could positively impact. They discussed ways in which they could raise awareness and came up with lots of ideas for a group project. The next step will be to plan the event watch this space! Peer Mediators Lead Anti-Bullying Week Each year our team of Peer mediators organise and run activities during Antibullying week. This year was no exception. The theme this year was Choose respect, so a group of the Peer mediators attended an after school club to learn what this means and decide how to spread the message to the whole school community. They chose to plan the following: Two assemblies - one for KS1 and one for KS2, explaining what respect means and why it is important that we act respectfully. They played a
2 video from the Anti bullying alliance that explained this perfectly then, they shared their views and asked the audience for theirs. R.E.S.P.E.CT. letters - the pupils cut out large letters and asked each year group to make coloured hand prints and write respectful messages inside. These letters, filled with hand prints were displayed in the lunch hall. Circle time activity - each class were asked to write the name of each member along with positive attributes for each. The idea was to show we are all different but all deserving of respect. Certificates were awarded for the most respectful classmate. Pyjama day pupils were asked to dress in their pyjamas and bring in a 1 donation for Anti bullying alliance They raised a fantastic ! Sensible Suggestions Every long term, during circle time sessions, our School councillors collect sensible suggestions from Nursery to Year 6. They explain that a sensible suggestion is something that will help their learning or the school in environment. They also explain what a sensible suggestion isn t e.g. having fizzy drinks at lunch time. This term, the children collected 335 suggestions, 160 of these were considered. The rest were either not sensible or were things we know are already being worked on.
3 They voted on five suggestions each, which narrowed down the list, then they voted as a group for their favourites. The following were chosen: Another Take over day Inter house football tournament Girls football club Chess competition Eco Warriors Lead Cluster Meeting Three of our Eco warriors volunteered to host a meeting with our cluster schools. They planned an agenda, including games, facts and discussion about eco issues. Seven local schools came to the meeting, which took place on Thursday 22 nd November in the pupil Voice room at Sunnyhill. After listening to the projects that the Sunnyhill Eco warriors have been planning, the other schools volunteered their own activities. They then discussed planning a group activity. A final list of five ideas was drawn up and voted on. The winning idea was to build a bug hotel in a public space such as the Rookery. Our Eco warriors received fantastic feedback, with everyone involved feeling that they had met new, like minded friends. The only complaint was that it wasn t long enough! Everyone was friendly and the hosts were amazing! I found it good because I could share my thoughts Next time, Streatham wells will be hosting and the children will plan the project.
4 Eco Warriors Help Community Clear Up One of our Eco warriors and one of our School councillors gave up their Saturday morning on 8 th December to help clear Unigate woods. They joined forces with members of the community, Friends of Unigate woods and Lambeth council to litter pick, make paths safe and ensure the young trees have room to grow. The adults we met were very impressed by their attitude and maturity. They have invited them, and other team members, along to the next clear up in February. We are hoping this is the start of a great community relationship.
5 School Council Pitch at City Hall Last half term, the School council team took part in training with Team London to develop their project ideas for this academic year. They chose to concentrate on the elderly, loneliness and mental health. Based on these ideas a proposal was written to apply for a Team London Small Grant. This idea was shortlisted and on 3 rd December, six Year 5 and 6 School councillors went to City Hall to pitch for up to 1000 to run the project. They stood on a stage in front of a panel of judges, reading the script they had written as a team. Everyone had a chance to speak during their 5 minute slot. Once they had proposed their ideas, the panel asked them questions, which they answered confidently and really impressed the panel. On the 10 th December we received fantastic feedback and found out they had been successful! The school council have been awarded to run their project this year the amount they carefully planned out in their budget. We are so extremely proud of you Well done! The judges were pleased that you had thought about sustainability and felt you would be able to keep the project running after initial funding. The team presented well, with persuasive and clear points which engaged the judges. The slides were very interesting with key information and statistics. They came across very well during the questions, dealing with pressure and answering everything well, this showed great preparation. Feedback The thing I m most proud about from our pitch is our budget and how confident everyone was about (answering) the questions Maggie Y6
6 Collection for Calais Last year the School council collected for Calais in two successful campaigns. Mr Holland was visiting the refugee camps again this December, so the school council wrote a letter to parents and pupils asking for donations. Sanitary products such as wet wipes, tooth paste and tooth brushes are particularly helpful. Some of the students also manned a stand at the winter fair selling t-shirts to raise funds for this cause well done team! Play Leaders Sensory Room Competition Two of our year 6 Play leaders took the lead in planning and running a sensory zone design competition. Friends of Sunnyhill kindly donated the proceeds of the Summer fair to building and stocking a sensory zone. The Play leaders launched a competition, open to everyone in the school, to design and advise the things they think this should include. Over 100 designs and ideas were submitted, four people even made 3d models. The ideas were fabulous! These were presented to Friends of Sunnyhill in a meeting at the end of term. The children explained how some of their ideas will be made into reality by them and Cathy Macdonald in the sewing room. We can t wait to see the end product! Peer Mediators Poetry Competition As part of Anti-bullying week the Peer mediators launched a poetry competition. This competition was open to all pupils of Sunnyhill and required the pupils to write a poem about kindness.
7 They received over 100 entries and it was very hard to choose. Luckily they had Ms Cornish and Ms Rackham to help. There were two overall winners: Mulki 3 Stour Enoch 4 Aire There were also seven runners-up. All entrants received a certificate. The runners up received pens and the winners received a pen and notebook to encourage them to write some more wonderful poems. Well done everyone!
