The River Lion edition 2013/7 February 2014 Welcome to 2014! The New Year always bring challenges for every Club where to with membership, how to find funds to support worthy causes in our community. Who will be on the next Board of Directors? Membership seems to be strong at the moment we welcomed some new members late in 2013, and we have several people interested in helping us help our community by joining our Club. Please make all these people welcome when they attend our meetings, and invite them to join in service work. Sadly, we recognised the passing of our esteemed member, and Life Member of the International Association of Lions Clubs, Past President Terry Kearney. Terry was a valued and well respected member of our Club, instrumental in a number of projects. Terry s particular passion was the Images of the Riverland calendar. His drive and enthusiasm for the success of this project will be sorely missed. Please remember to touch base with Dawn. I know that Dawn still wishes to be involved with the calendar project, which will now be guided by Allan, Terry M and Debbie. Debbie has started promoting quiz nights at the Berri Club, to be held the first Monday of every month. Proceeds from the Quiz Nights will be shared between the Berri Club and our Lions Club. Please put these dates in your diary and make the effort to attend I am sure that you will have a great night. Don t forget that we welcome District Governor Rhys, and his wife Helen, on 5 March. The evening will be a dinner meeting, catered by the Club. Venue details will follow. Until next time. Veda!

Vale Terry Kearney Terry, we will miss your humour, your good advice, your passion for the community, and most of all your friendship. Rest in peace our friend. A society grows great when men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.

Happy birthday 6th February Scott Pedler 11th February Graham Kassebaum Enjoy your day! Belated birthday greetings to Dennis Matthews 70 on January 10th Tomo Firli 70 on January 20th Annette Smith 21st January To be Careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy. Get your breath freshener from us! Lions Youth of the Year is designed to encourage, foster and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities in our youth, at the age when they are about to enter the fields of employment or higher education, and provides students with the incentive to pay greater attention to the general qualities, so vital in developing our youths into first class citizens. The qualities sought, apart from academic attainments are those of leadership, personality, sportsmanship, public speaking and good citizenship. The students meet in fellowship and have the opportunity of open discussion, exchange of ideas and meet professional people of a community service Club organisation.

Mission Statement is To fund mobility devices for children with disabilities, giving these children a chance to walk.

District Governor Rhys Roberts Born during WWII on the Adelaide plains and escaped to the Adelaide Hills aged 3. Been there ever since except for a short 15 year holiday in Canberra as a Political Lobbyist, representing the interests of people as diverse as BHP, the Japanese Government and the Australian Consumers Organisation - the Publisher of the national 'Choice' magazine. Always had an interest in disabled sport and led Australia's Paralympic Team to Seoul in 1988 as its chef de mission. My wife, Helen Henbest, and I officially run a small Adelaide-based family art publishing company which trades as Australian Prints and Paintings, but these days we are essentially retired. Once upon a time played cricket, footy, squash and was even stupid enough to run a few marathons. Trained hard to cover my distinct lack of talent. Today it's very social tennis. Helen and I have four children between us and seven grandchildren. We live in Blackwood, where we both enjoy painting - she specialises in landscapes, I do the occasional portrait. Joined Blackwood Lions in Been Club President twice, a Director for too many years, and ran the Club's Bargain Centre from 2000 to I'm privileged to have an MJF and a James D Richardson Award. I have been a Trustee and Secretary of the C Districts Lions Medical Research Foundation for the last decade. Was the Inaugural Chairman of the Adelaide Hills Combined Community Clubs and Chairman of the Mitcham Hills Christmas Pageant. I'm on the Blackwood Community Recreation Centre Management Committee, and I'm Chairman of the Blackwood War Memorial Hall. Our Club will welcome DG Rhys and Helen to our meeting on March 5. Please join in hearing Rhys message to us, and be prepared for a great night!

Nominations and Elections what are they about? WHAT IS THIS BOARD OF DIRECTORS ALL ABOUT? The Board of Directors, usually just called the Board, is in effect the management committee of the club. It is made up of members elected annually by the whole club and comprises the President, Vice Presidents, Secretary, Treasurer and Membership Director. The President may appoint other members as he/she sees fit. The Board meets once each month to carry out club business. It approves all payments, although it is not allowed to approve payment of anything outside policies approved by the club as a whole, it recommends new projects, policies and ideas for decision by the club, and does much of the nitty-gritty detail administrative work so that members don t get bogged down in detail at club meetings. ELECTIONS Every year in February, the President appoints a nominations committee whose job is to ensure that there is at least one Lion nominated for each elected position. Then an official Nomination Meeting is held you are entitled to receive written notice of this meeting at which any member may nominate any other member for any position. You can even nominate yourself if you want! An election meeting follows in early April at which all members vote for each position. Only those already nominated may be elected and no further nominations are allowed except in very special circumstances. Members elected take office on July 1st following. We have received an order for 3 Lions seats. We need to make these as soon as we can, and despatch them to Mallala Lions Club. We will hold a working bee shortly to make them stay tuned for more details
