First United Church Community Ministry Society Annual Report 2014
President s Welcome In 2014, First United held steady its resolve to support the most marginalized men and women living in the Downtown Eastside. In a time and place marked by change and uncertainty, the staff and volunteers reinforced their commitment of care. This year, our partners stepped up to acknowledge and reinforce our good work. The federal government stepped up to support our seniors outreach work and the Law Foundation of BC deepened our partnership. These all serve as testaments to the dedication and capability of our team. We can look back on this as the year that we set the stage for exciting things to come. In 2014, Executive Director Stephen Gray announced his intention to retire, sparking us all to reflect on our vision for the future. Thanks to the solid foundation set by Stephen and the team, First United is well prepared for whatever the future holds. As part of these exciting changes, we are pleased to welcome Genesa Greening as our new Executive Director. We know we can anticipate great things as a result of her dynamic leadership. On behalf of my fellow Board members, I applaud the hard work and commitment of all the staff and volunteers to First United and the Downtown Eastside. - Stan Lanyon, Board Chair
Board of Directors Stan Lanyon - Chair Brian Thorpe - Vice Chair Ariel Creighton - Secretary Bob Burrows Judy Echols Mark Paetkau Scott Griffin Don Robertson Paul Scipio Lydia Taylor Marion Young Stephen Gray - Non Voting Sally McShane - Non Voting Doug Goodwin - Non Voting Board Retirements & Welcomes Special thanks go out to our recently retired board members Bob Burrows and Don Robertson. Your service as board directors, as well as your many years of dedication to the greater First United community, has made an immeasurable difference. Thank you both. We are delighted to announce Judy Graves has joined First United as the newest member of our board. Judy came on as a director in early Welcome, Judy!
Executive Director s Welcome A pivotal year in the life of First United Church Community Ministry that is how I would describe In May, we held our first annual general meeting as an incorporated society and elected an outstanding group of directors to see us through the next three years. In June, we completed and began living out our strategic plan, a plan that will guide us through the next five years. As an important community asset in the Downtown Eastside, we have determined a course of action to ensure a longterm presence in this neighbourhood. This year saw the release of the City of Vancouver s official Downtown Eastside Local Area Plan, which provides us with a guide to the future of the community over the next years. It is both exciting and challenging to be part of the rapid change occurring around us. As a rock in a community undergoing transformation, we know it is incumbent upon us to be a source of stability and continuity for the people being impacted most directly: those who are homeless, poor, socially isolated, and otherwise vulnerable. On the operational side, 2014 saw the stabilization and growth of our legal advocacy program. Our major funder, the Law Foundation of BC, designated us a continuing program after an intensive evaluation of our service. And advocacy was enhanced with the addition of two part-time advocates largely through funding from the City of Vancouver and other partners.
Our seniors social club, focused on overcoming isolation amongst the older population, became an integral part of our community outreach in 2014 with an injection of funding from Employment and Social Development Canada. And the community volunteer tax program has now become a core program, offering an essential service and a gateway to many other programs and services for low income people brought many other great successes. We mobilized mass support for the Aviva Community Fund campaign, resulting in a gift of $41,000 in aid of our storage program. We provided over 2500 high quality nutritional meals every week to the Downtown Eastside community. And, very importantly, we continued to offer our ministry of sanctuary and pastoral care, guided by Reverend Sally McShane. Overall, 2014 set the stage for First United to continue to play a major role affirming the worth of individuals, empowering communities and working for social justice in the Downtown Eastside for the balance of this decade and beyond. - Stephen Gray Stephen Gray retired from First United on August 14, 2015 after 24 years of service. We are deeply grateful for his years of commitment, and wish him well in his next adventures! Stephen was succeeded as Executive Director by Genesa Greening, who brings to the role a wealth of organizational leadership experience and years of engagement in the Downtown Eastside community. Welcome Genesa!
