1 East Cobb Lions Serving our community for 59 years! We Serve November, 2017 Page 1 of 6 From our President Hello Lions, The month of November is here with the cooler temperatures we have been craving. Our vision screening program in the Cobb County Schools is winding down and will be completed in November with three schools remaining. Kudos, to those that participated in this project and made it a success. Our efforts for conducting visions screenings for the remainder of the year will focus on providing this service to whoever request it in our community. Therefore, if you have not participated in our vision screening program yet, consider joining one of the visions screening in the future, since, in all likely hood they will be conducted on a weekend. On November 11th we will be at the Atlanta Food Bank partnering with the Blue Cross / Blue Shield Anthem group to help stock the food bank shelves. If you would like to participate, contact Kelly Ryan for details. On November 20th we will be having our joint thanksgiving meal with the Marietta Club as we do every year but this year we will be joined with all the other clubs in our zone, since this is a zone meeting as well. This joint meeting will take place at the South Cobb Club. Please contact Lions Ray and Liz as soon as possible if you plan to attend to have an accurate head count for our meal providers. This month (November), I need everyone in our club to concentrate your efforts on obtaining door prizes to raffle off during our pancake breakfast with Santa to be held on Saturday, December 2nd. We will also need to obtain gift cards from our local food merchants ( Kroger, Publix etc.) to purchase food to support our pancake breakfast and Meals on Wheels on the December 25th. Lion Asgar Kachwalla, is the chairman for our breakfast with Santa this year, so give him your support to make this event a success this year. Lion Al Hernandez

The cost of the meal will be paid by the club. A head count has been requested, let me know on the 14th if you will be there. Our Christmas Party is scheduled for Tuesday Dec 12 and will be held at Indian Hills Country Club. Entertainment is planned. Reservations are required. Any questions, please let me know. 3 Page 3 of 6 Vision Screening Vision Screening Update October 30, 2017 Lion Ed Ressler, Chairman East Cobb Lions Vision Screening Some of you know that I prefer not to throw out a bunch of numbers but at times they are very impressive. Our Vision Screening Teams, which includes members of the East Cobb, Atlanta Latino, Smyrna Jonquil and Marietta Lions Clubs, have been busy screening the students in the Cobb County School System since August. When I say busy, I mean busy. There have been weeks when we did seven screenings. Most of the time we use two SPOT vision screeners but on occasion we only use one and at times we will use three. Unless there is a last minute call for vision screening, we will be done on November 17. As of October 30, our TEAM has screened a total of 9065 clients. Of that number, 8030 were in the Cobb County School System. Just in October the Team screened 4598 students. No there were very few three day work weeks but the Team has gotten the job done and we have educated several schools of the benefits of using the SPOT vision screener, the least important being the amount of time we save the school. Next month I will have the totals for the year and we will be close to 10,000 screenings and in excess of 9,000 in the Cobb County School District. However, we cannot stop there. After the first of the year we need to be screening in Day Care and Early Learning Centers. If you know one, give the contact information to Ed Ressler so he can contact them. From: Kelly Mccluskey To: Ed Ressler Subject: Teasley Report Good morning! I hope that you are doing well and enjoying this southern fall weather! I wanted to let you know and I hope you can pass it along, that we are thinking of you and all of your sweet volunteers as we muddle through our hearing screening. We so appreciate your dedication and how quickly we were able to get through our vision screening with your amazing technology thanks to your dedicated volunteers!

We will be sorting food items for the Atlanta Food Bank on the morning of Saturday November 11, There will be 30 anthem volunteers which means we just need a few Lions for this activity. Light refreshments will be served after the work is completed. The exact time will be announced as soon as it has been established. Thank you Kelly Ryan East Cobb Marietta Lions Anthem Day Coordinator
5 Page 5 of 6 East Cobb Lions support Habitat for Humanity The East Cobb Lions were a sponsor of the 24th Annual Habitat Road Race on Saturday, October 7th at Mt. Bethel UMC in Marietta. All proceeds from the race are used to fund Mt. Bethel s 37th Habitat home. There was a 5K road run at 8:00 am, a 1 mile fun run at 9:00 am, followed by a Habitat Trot (ages 5 and under). Over 700 runners took part in the races. Lions Henry Bohn, Bob Hennessey, Don Garrow, Susan Hampton and Don Webster participated in supporting this great event. On Saturday, October 21 st, East Cobb Lions participated in the Mt. Bethel UMC Habitat Build. Lions Al Hernandez, Asgar Kachwalla, Henry Bohn and Don Garrow worked on constructing the house. Lions Ray Moore, Liz Moore and Granddaughter Avery prepared and served lunch to all the volunteer workers.

One has a guide dog, and the other is tapping his way along the aisle with a cane. The cockpit door closes and the engines start up, the passengers then become anxious for some sign that this is just a practical joke. None is forthcoming. The plane moves faster and faster down the runway, and those sitting in the window seats realize they re headed straight for the water at the end of the runway. As it begins to look like the plane will plough into the water, screams fill the cabin... At that moment, the plane lifts smoothly into the air. Everyone relaxes and turns to their magazines and ipads, secure in the knowledge that the plane is in good hands. In the cockpit, one of the blind pilots turns to the other and says, Ya know, Bob, one of these days, they re gonna scream too late and we re all gonna die!
