2950 Potshop Rod Worcester PA, March 30, 2017 Issue 8 Voice of Variety

Dear Friends of Variety, It was another extremely busy month for us here at Variety. We were able to put on two hugely successful events, Let Them Eat Cake and Vegas at Variety, within 3 weeks of each other. This was a challenging task but with the help of supporters and a lot of hard work we showed what are able to accomplish. I m very proud of all members of the Variety team and anyone who helped us along the way. Our March newsletter highlights our new programmatic changes, the creation of our alumni association, and a Firstrust fundraising campaign to support Variety. It also includes a short recap of this month s events and a short bio of our Variety VIP of the month. It is a very exciting time here at Variety, especially with all the innovative changes happening all over campus. As always we d like you to keep a few dates in mind. Our Trail Run & Spring Fling Party is taking place Saturday April 29 on Variety s 80-acre campus. On Saturday May 20, we will be hosting our 2nd annual Black Hat Bash event at the Philadelphia Zoo. We will be honoring Paul McGovern of Deloitte for the many ways he supports Variety. If you have any questions, concerns or just want to chat about anything Variety, please feel free to contact me via at angus.murray@varietyphila.org or phone (610) x 203. Thanks for all the support you have provided and continue to provide to our kids! Sincerely, Angus Murray CEO Variety the Children s Charity of the Delaware Valley Variety VIP of the Month Don Faul We d like to congratulate Don Faul for being our Variety VIP of the month. Don is the Managing Director for CBIZ MHM LLC and has served as our board treasurer for over 5 years. Don was recently honored as our Ace of Variety at our 2017 Vegas at Variety event for all the support he has offered Variety in numerous ways. We cannot thank him enough for all hat he has done and continues to do to help nurture independence and self-confidence in our kids with disabilities.

Variety- the Children s Charity summer camp is under new management! With the addition of Heather Johnson, Director of Programming and Kristin Podwojski, Camp Director some exciting changes are coming to camp this summer. We are upgrading our programming! Instead of one activity per area, we are formatting each session to include a craft, sensory activity, cognitive activity, physical activity and large-group activity with an over-arching theme. This unique programmatic model will give every camper the opportunity to make choices about how he or she wants to participate. Also, we are currently pursuing funding for new activities such as a choir, robotics, photography, and social media programs. We will continue to offer our wonderful nature, arts and crafts, dance, sports, golf, drama, music, and science/technology activities. Of course, we will still be offering swimming every day! American Camp Association. We pride ourselves on the quality of our training for staff, and are happy to announce that over 75% of our staff are returning to work this summer. Although our prices have increased slightly, we do offer payment plans and financial aid for those wishing to apply. Priority will be given to those requesting financial aid for camp sessions in the month of July. We understand that in the past there may have been difficulties with communicating with the previous administration, therefore we have instituted a 2 business day reply policy on s and phone calls. We really appreciate everyone who has been part of the Variety family through the years, and are always here to address any questions you may have about our camp. We are looking forward to the best summer ever and invite you to be a part of it! Variety provides individualized attention to campers at no greater than a 1:3 staffing ratio and we have nurses available 24 hours a day. We continue to be accredited by the

Announcing the Variety Alumni Association! The purpose of the Alumni Association is to promote and support Variety and offer Alumni opportunities to develop and maintain friendships built at Variety by participating in recreational events. Membership is available to any individual over age 21 who has previously enjoyed any Variety program. In order to join the Alumni Association, dues are a donation of at least $100 per year and volunteering to work at one Variety event per year. Once you have submitted your donation online through our webpage, you will receive a program book filled with recreational opportunities for Variety Alumni, such as cooking classes, summer Saturday swims, monthly meet-ups in the community and a rec program on Variety s campus. Best of all, you will be able to the attend the six night, seven day Alumni Reunion Week every July. These camp weeks offer peer staff, specialized programs designed specifically for adults, and a new upgraded menu. Spaces will fill up quickly and will be available on a firstcome, first-served basis. New recreational programs will be added as the group grows, and Variety is now eligible to receive waiver payments! In addition, you can join our Alumni Association Facebook page, which will give you electronic access to other Alumni, as well as helpful information for our community. Variety aims to provide its Alumni group with the latest resources and education on things like social security, changes in waiver services, legislation and other opportunities to help individuals create his or her best possible life. For more information, or if you have any questions, please contact Heather Johnson at x 230 or heather.johnson@varietyphila.org

Trail Run & Spring Fling On Saturday, April 29, Variety will be hosting our annual Trail Run & Spring Fling event. This event begins with a race through the beautiful Variety campus followed by a Spring Fling party. The race portion is a chip timed 4 mile course taking participants through Variety s vast campus starting at 10am. You can choose to run or walk the course (walkers can do 1-4 miles) depending on your preference. Prizes will be awarded to the top runners overall and by age. All registered runners and walkers will receive a t-shirt (tech shirts guaranteed to those who register by April 15th, after that it is first come first serve), swag bag, & wrist band to attend the Spring Fling party. After the race our Spring Fling party begins. The party will include food, beer, live music from You, Me, & Reenie, family-fun activities, and vendor/resources tables. The party will go until 3pm giving you plenty of time to enjoy every aspect of the Spring Fling. All proceeds will benefit Variety the Children s Charity of the Delaware Valley. To sign up for the Trail Run or Spring Fling go to: Events Recap Let Them Eat Cake On March 5, Variety s held its first Let Them Eat Cake event and we couldn t be happier. The participating pastry chefs did a fantastic job making cakes that looked great and tasted even better. Overall it was a wonderful experience and we re excited to see what the event will bring next year. Vegas at Variety On March 25, we held our annual Vegas at Variety event in the Empress Room at St.Helena s Church. Plenty of games to choose from, extraordinary prize baskets, and an appearance from Elvis made the evening a night to remember. This is always one of our favorite nights of the year and we re already looking forward to next year. Photo by Laura Eaton
