3 Welcome to Through the Maze Hello and welcome to the Through the Maze Newsletter. We hope that you enjoy the Summer Newsletter. There are lots of events and activities happening in Leeds this Summer including Leeds Learning Disability Week. 4 Leeds International Concert Season Summer Bands are playing in Leeds Parks on Sundays during the Summer. Entertainment from brass, jazz and concert bands. 6 Women Speak to Power It is 100 years since women got the right to vote. We are going to celebrate this with 2 events for women with learning difficulties. On the 11 th October, Learn how women got the vote. Why it is important to vote. Write questions to ask politicians on the 12 th October. On the 12 th October we have MPs and local councillors coming to answer your questions PM 3.00PM Lunch is provided. If you want to know more or to get a booking form please ring

7 70 years of NHS in Learning Disabilities During 2018 the NHS are celebrating 70 years. There will be an exhibition, stories about living in Meanwood Park Hospital. The Outsiders Band, Mind The Gap Theatre Company and the Ginger Cat Theatre Company will also be performing. 8 Leeds Young Talent Night People in Action, People Matters and Leeds City College are organising a Talent Show for people aged with a learning disability. This year there will be celebrity judges. Liam Bairstow who plays Alex in Coronation Street, Lee Ridley the Lost Voice Guy from Britain s got Talent and a surprise actor from Emmerdale. This year the event will be on 27 th June at Leeds College of Music. You can only come and watch this event if you have a ticket. Tickets cost 4.00 We are looking for young disabled people with a talent to perform at this year s show. You must be between the ages of to enter. 9 BEYOND Learning Disability and the Arts in Leeds - Festival 2018 BEYOND is an arts festival in Leeds. It celebrates the great work by artists and performers with learning disabilities. It also tells people with learning disabilities about the arts organisations in Leeds that they can join. The festival will start on 5 th July and finish on 22 nd July. There will be loads to see and do. Please visit the Beyond Arts website or ask for a brochure to find out what events are happening. 10 Leeds Festival Leeds Festival is a large rock music festival. The Festival takes place in Bramham Park near Wetherby. Some of the bands that are playing this year include, Fall Out Boy, Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, Panic! At the Disco and Kings of Leon. The Festival take place over 3 days 24 th, 25 th, 26 th August. There are different tickets available. Please check the website for more details info@festivalrepublic.com 9

20 Pass it on People s visit the Old Fire Station-Gipton The Pass it on People went to the Old Fire Station in Gipton. We liked it a lot because we were made to feel very welcome. At the reception we were told about some of the organisations which run activities there People in Action Space Jamie s Ministry of Food ( Zest Health for Life We visited The Feel Good café run by SLATE. We thought it was a relaxed place to have a drink and chat. We found the Old Fire Station easy to get to by bus. There were lots of buses we could get. The building has a large car park. 21 Pass it on People talk to Dave Firth from SLATE Tania Sapphire Janet George What can you volunteer to do at SLATE? There are 2 shops, 2 cafes, 2 delivery vans and a warehouse. There are jobs serving customers, using the till, cooking and working on the vans. How do you become a volunteer? Ring Ann Wilson to get an application form When you have filled it in, we will meet you to decide what you would like to do. Do you have to pay? Volunteers apply for funding through Adult Social Care Are there any volunteering places available now? There are some volunteer places, give us a ring. Courtney Tania What skills do you need to have? You don t need particular skills, you just need determination. How long can you volunteer for? Some people have volunteered for 15 years. There s not a set time. Sapphire What training do you get? We have a person centred approach and will train you in whatever makes sense to you. There s a Health and Safety course. Some people have done NVQ level 2 in Customer Service and in Food Hygiene. Janet Do you get paid? No but 7 people have gone on to get paid work. People enjoy the social aspect of SLATE, it s a great place to be. We have 2 residentials a year and trips out. We are going to Scarborough this summer. 22 Scope Kick Start Employment Kick Start is an employment service run by Scope. The service supports disabled people, people with learning disabilities and people with autism to find employment. To get help from the Kick Start service you must be : Of working age. Looking for paid work. You will get support from a specialist employment advisor to understand your goals and how to achieve them. For more information contact Amy Green amy.green@scope.org.uk 21
