Summer is an active time for our group, with a chance to enjoy the Arlington Heights area offerings of free summer concerts, festivals, pools and parks. It is also a time of transition with our change of officers which will take place in August. After several years of service, some of us will not be continuing on the Executive Board, including Michelle D., Becky H., Chris S., and me! We look forward to continuing as members. There will be some shifting of positions with the remaining officers and we will need four new officers. If you would like to volunteer for a position, or would like to nominate someone, please contact me! We have included all of the position descriptions at the end of the newsletter. Most only take a few hours a month. Please me at watia@hotmail.com and I can update you on which positions we still need to fill. I have found my seven years (and counting) with the Newcomers to be extremely rewarding. I have made so many new friends within the group, so I highly recommend getting more involved! Come watch this Jimmy Buffett tribute band in the kickoff to the free Sounds of Summer Concert Series on Thursdays and Fridays throughout the summer. Join us on Friday, June 5 from 4:30 to 7:30 PM as Arlington Heights Park District hosts "Picnic in the Park" Have friend and family fun with moonwalks, inflatable slides, face painting, balloon sculptures and micro reality stock car racing!! Musical entertainment includes: Jeanie B and the Jellybeans (4:30pm - 5:30pm) and Ac-Rock (6:00pm - 7:30pm). picnic. The AH Park District's "Picnic in the Park" will be held at North School Park, located at the corner of Eastman Street and Arlington Heights Road. Fridays at 10am Summer Park Playdays are super fun! Great way to make new friends! Be sure to ask to be put onto the playgroup list so you are aware of where they ll be meeting. Some fun and exciting locations are being planned! If you are interested in joining the Friday playgroups please let Pam, our Mom-Tot Coordinator, know! Book Club JUNE 23 rd 7:30pm at Bliss H. s House "Let's Pretend This Never Happened" by Jenny Lawson When Jenny Lawson was little, all she ever wanted was to fit in. That dream was cut short by her fantastically unbalanced father and a morbidly eccentric childhood. It did, however, open up an opportunity for Lawson to find the humor in the strange shame-spiral that is her life, and we are all the better for it. In the irreverent Let s Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson s long-suffering husband and sweet daughter help her uncover the surprising discovery that the most terribly human moments the ones we want to pretend never happened are the very same moments that make us the people we are today. For every intellectual misfit who thought they were the only ones to think the things that Lawson dares to say out loud, this is a poignant and hysterical look at the dark, disturbing, yet wonderful moments of our lives. "Pot Luck Dinner Party" at Michelle D. s house. Everyone bring one of their favorite dishes/recipes (and/or wine)! Whether it be an appetizer, side dish, main dish or dessert please bring along with copies of the recipe. We will all sample everyone's favorite dishes over some wine, laughs and good conversation. Thursday, June 18, 3:00-5:00 p.m., Pioneer Pool Tuesday, June 23, 10:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m., Heritage Pool Board Descriptions President The President of Newcomers is responsible for managing the overall running of the group. The responsibilities of doing this include: Writing monthly President s Prattles for the newsletter Welcoming new members as they join through an or phone call Coordinating with officers to make sure that monthly events are being scheduled Attending monthly events to meet new members Help officers organize large annual events such as the Spring Fundraiser and the Summer Family picnic Scheduling a kick off meeting w/officers at the beginning of the Newcomers year to plan events Conducting a survey annually with members to gather programming ideas Work with VP to set new members up with a Nifty Neighbor. A Nifty Neighbor is an existing member who has things in common with a new member. The nifty neighbor will invite them to go to events and potentially go with them so they feel they know someone. Vice President The vice-president of Newcomers is responsible for handling new membership. The responsibilities of doing this include: Responding to requests for information on the group. Following up with potential new members who have expressed interest. Updating the Group Directory, Google Group list, and Evite list with new member information. Alerting all Officers of new members through so they know the new member s interests and can respond accordingly to get her involved and on all lists. Alerting the group to new members (once they have paid dues) Periodically touching base with the President about new members as well as the Welcome Committee chairperson Attending monthly events to meet new members Help officers organize large annual events such as the Spring Fundraiser and the Summer Family Picnic Social Coordinator This officer is responsible for planning monthly GNO events, as well as additional events for couples. Responsibilities include: Planning a GNO each month Getting the month s events info. to the newsletter editor Making reservations for GNO events and taking rsvp s Planning additional events for couples and members including but not limited to: a day at the Racetrack, a show at Metropolis, plans to meet at summer concerts and festivals, Ravinia concerts, etc. Attending monthly GNOs and other events to meet new members and stay involved Helping with the spring fundraiser as needed (Continued on P. 5) 2014/2015 AH Newcomers & Neighbors BOARD Amy B. 5 Arlington Heights Newcomers & Neighbors Welcome Committee Chairperson This officer works with the Vice President to make sure new members who have paid dues are properly welcomed into the group. This position requires the following: Communication with the VP about new members Sending a welcoming to new members, finding out which event(s) they will be attending, and trying to meet new members at these events Accumulating information, coupons, flyers from the surrounding suburban areas to pass out in a Welcome Bag for new members. Some items to include in the welcome bag would be: Oaklee s Guide, library schedule, a hard copy of the latest Newcomers Newsletter, flyers from places of interest Annual dues are $25 in August and are prorated throughout the year. The Arlington Heights Newcomers club welcomes new members every month, whether they join because they are women new to the village or are just looking for a social organization with a playgroup or book club. (no purchasing of gift-type items is necessary with the exception of small gift bags to put the materials in) Distributing these Welcome Bags to new members within a month of their joining Periodically checking in with new members to make them feel welcome Updating member directory and list (with new member info provided by the VP) and sending to each member with the attached newsletter and directory each month Treasurer This officer is responsible for keeping track of membership dues, reimbursing members for club expenses, and reporting financial position to the President periodically throughout the year. This officer will: Take over the Newcomers and Neighbors checking account for the year Work with the VP to collect new member dues, reporting to the VP when dues are received Sending out s at the start of the Newcomers year (July) to remind members if they still need to pay dues Alerting the President and VP of any members who have not paid dues within two months Reimbursing members for club related expenses *with the President s approval only Mom-Tot/Family Coordinator This is a very important position, since many of our members are young mothers looking for ways to get involved and get out with their children. This job has the following responsibilities: Keeping track of all existing playgroups within Newcomers, this should be updated each new year as members change groups, change meeting days, etc. Contacting new members to see if they are interested in playgroups, and helping new members with children find a playgroup that fits their needs Planning a monthly Playgroup Event where various playgroups can all get together to have fun. Ideas include: bowling, picnics, children s concerts, meeting at the kiddie pool, family racetrack days, etc. Maintaining the Newcomers e-vite account with new members info/ s (Continued on p. 6) Come and Join us! 6 Arlington Heights Newcomers & Neighbors AH Newcomers & Neighbors Club Established in 1947 We are a nonprofit organization offering a welcoming hand to women who relocate to the area or those who are looking for a social organization. The group had a long history, founded in Arlington Heights, IL in 1947, but it stays young and revitalized as new members join each year. Our members are women of all ages, and we offer many activities designed to offer members friendship and support, to bring them together on a social basis. We welcome you. Come and Join us! Helping Hands Chairperson This position is responsible for all fundraising, charitable, and civic efforts. This position may require the assembling of additional members to help coordinate certain events. A committee would be beneficial in planning the spring fundraiser (and can include other officers). This position includes facilitating the following: Organizing Helping Hands meals for members who experience a need (birth, death in the family, or another speciall need) The President will inform the Chairperson of a need within Newcomers, the chairperson will then contact the member in need and establish a timeline for meal deliveries. They will then solicit volunteers from within Newcomers to donate meals and provide them with a date and place to deliver. Organizing the spring fundraiser/charitable event. The chairperson will get ideas from within Newcomers for charitable ideas or organizations close to members hearts. Decide on an event (wine tasting, baby shower, luncheon, or group participation in an event such as a walk or race, etc) With the help of the President, VP, and Social coordinator, plan this event. Optional: Organize a couple nights during the year to participate in local PADS meal service through local churches. Book Discussion Coordinator This officer must love to read, and keep up on new ideas for great book selections. Responsibilities include: Getting the new year started by selecting a book and potentially hosting the first book club (July or August) From there, the coordinator will be sure there is a host for each month s book club discussion, and a book selection-using Newcomer input for ideas and suggestions Can help the month s hostess with ideas for discussion questions, and making sure an e-vite is sent each month, either from the coordinator, or the hostess WebMaster/Newsletter Editor The Webmaster makes sure our Website is updated and accessible for members and potential members to navigate. The website includes information about Newcomers, upcoming events, current and old newsletters for the year, contact information for officers, and details on how to join. The Newsletter Editor portion of this position requires a proof-reading ability and familiarity with a word processing or publishing program. Accumulating monthly newsletter articles from all officers/coordinators, creating the newsletter, and ing the current newsletter to all members. Public Relations Chairperson This position requires a person that truly understands the purpose or a group like Newcomers. Responsibilities include: Including information about Newcomers in local newspapers, Oaklee s guide, and even Craigslist ads Thinking of creative ways to reach prospective members Being a spokesperson for the group and talking up the benefits of membership Directing prospective members to the VP
