PLANNING FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE A Publication by the Family and Friends of Penn-Mar Human Services
[ PENN-MAR FAMILY AND FRIENDS ] Our Mission We believe in the determination and spirit of family and friends joining together for a common purpose in an effort to support each other and the agency through volunteer efforts.
A Message from the Co-Chairs OF THE PENN-MAR FAMILY AND FRIENDS PROGRAM Foresight is a new publication by the Family and Friends of Penn-Mar Human Services. We hope you find it enjoyable and informative. It is our hope, too, these pages will give you some peace of mind. As parents of children with intellectual disabilities, we have experienced the challenges and anxiety of caring for a son or daughter who will have a future with different opportunities. Among our greatest fears has been the worry of what will happen to our children when we are no longer present to watch over them. In these pages, you will read stories of other parents, family members, and friends who have faced similar fears and learn about the steps they are taking to overcome them and the importance in doing so. These parents and family members have been pleased to share their stories and, most important of all, the reasons behind their actions. If you have any questions, we are happy to provide more information to you. Claudia Summerson CO-CHAIR PENNSYLVANIA Claudette Wheeler CO-CHAIR MARYLAND
SAFEGUARDING TOMORROW THE STORY OF Bardelle and Jim Offutt and their daughter, Laura When our special daughter, Laura, was born, we realized we had to think ahead from the start, Bardelle said. We had to ask ourselves what kind of life we wanted for our daughter. Jim agrees. We also knew we had to think about the kind of services we wanted for Laura, especially when we would not be here to participate in her care. For Bardelle and Jim, this meant extensive research and visiting numerous agencies. Jim said, We were looking for a provider with a people culture that was not only business savvy, but also, how do you say it LOVING THEIR MISSION OF CARING. They wanted an organization that would provide a home for Laura one that she would consider home even after visiting her parents. Bardelle said, We knew Penn-Mar would offer Laura an environment where she would be proud of her activities and her new home. Jim accepted an invitation to join Penn-Mar s Board of Directors and also agreed to serve as a member of the Penn-Mar Foundation Board. Today, he still serves on the Foundation Board. When I tell people I am confident Penn-Mar is a well-run agency, I say so with the perspective of someone who has a comprehensive perspective, Jim said. I am aware of the economic concerns facing Penn-Mar but believe that with their fiscal conservancy and public and private support, they will be supporting individuals for generations to come. Jim said, We were looking for a way to give Penn-Mar financial support for the future and, thereby, secure Laura s future. This seemed impossible because we had to be realistic in considering our own retirement and our desire to leave something for our two boys. An estate planning meeting at Penn-Mar gave them the answer a Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT).
For us, the Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT) made perfect sense. It was a win/win. JIM OFFUTT This kind of trust is established using cash, appreciated stocks, or property donated to an irrevocable trust for life or for a fixed number of years. The trust generates income to the donor, and the charitable organization receives the principal when the trust is concluded. In Jim and Bardelle s case, the CRUT offered: No tax on the sale of appreciated assets donated to the CRUT. A substantial tax deduction. Reinvestment of assets into higher return options. Income for life on 100% of the assets which exceeded present returns. Resources to purchase a life insurance policy benefiting our other children. A substantial gift to Penn-Mar. For us, Jim explains, the Charitable Remainder Unitrust made perfect sense. It was a win/win. Most important of all, we know where the money is going after Bardelle and I are gone. It will help our daughter by helping Penn-Mar for many years to come.
SUPPORTING PENN-MAR NOW, FOREVER, AND BEYOND THE STORY OF Betty Lou and Harry Young and their son, Jeff When Harry and Betty Lou Young first met in 1941, Harry was 17 and Betty Lou was 15. They have spent their lives together ever since then, with the exception of Harry s military service in the China India Burma Theater. They were married in Not only devoted to each other, Harry and Betty Lou are devoted to their son, Jeff, as well. We are the same as any parent who wants the best for their child or their children, says Betty Lou. Jeff came to Penn-Mar Human Services in 1992 when he was 38 years old. In 2014, he will turn 60. Jeff may not have the ability to learn as quickly as other people, and he may not have the same skills most adults have, according to Harry. This does not mean Jeff has lacked an active imagination and lively curiosity. Penn-Mar values this fact as much as we do.
Penn-Mar has provided our son with experiences and choices to pursue his interests. No parent could ask for more. BETTY LOU YOUNG From the first day Jeff arrived at Penn-Mar, Betty Lou and Harry felt their son would receive the services he needed to help support him and the stimulation and encouragement he would need to offer a fulfilling quality of life. Penn-Mar has provided Jeff with more than food and shelter. Penn-Mar has provided Jeff with experiences and choices to pursue his interests. No parent could ask for more, Betty Lou says. Harry adds, This is why we have supported Penn-Mar for the past 22 years, and why we want to support Penn-Mar for another hundred years at least. You might think this a strange thing coming from an 89-year-old man, but we found a way. Betty Lou and Harry have decided to endow an annual gift to the Penn-Mar Foundation. With a gift of $2,500 to Penn-Mar s Endowment Fund, Betty Lou and Harry want the income generated used to support Penn-Mar s quality programs and facilities. We still have Penn-Mar in our estate plans, but Betty Lou and I thought why should we wait to make a difference for Jeff, Harry says. Betty Lou agrees, This is another way for us to stay connected to Jeff now and for years to come.
INSURANCE FOR THE FUTURE THE STORY OF David Stang and his brother, Murray When my mother and father were making plans to divide their estate among their children, I let them know where I stood, David Stang recalls. They had provided me with a wonderful upbringing. They helped give me all the knowledge and skills I needed to make my way in the world. The rest was up to me. My brother, Murray, didn t have the same chance, and I wanted my parents to take any share of their estate intended for me and use it to support him. It was the least I could do for Murray. My wife and I feel the same way in making our own estate plans. We want to help Murray and other men and women who can t help themselves as a result of their intellectual disability. David and Murray Stang have a special relationship. As the oldest, David has always looked out for his younger brother. He has always taken an active role in overseeing Murray s welfare, and he has formed strong viewpoints about the right thing for him to do. Murray is my brother, David stated. Physical challenges and an intellectual disability do not change this fact. He is his own man and has a clear idea of what he wants. He has never been shy about making his thoughts and feelings known. Murray came to Penn-Mar in 2008 at the age of 48. David was closely involved in the transition. The services Murray was receiving from another agency were good, David remembers. I just thought the services available at Penn-Mar were better. From what I learned about Penn-Mar, I was certain Murray would have a richer, more varied quality of life, and I am confident he has. David Stang is also a man with a clear idea of what he expects and what he wants for his brother. He likes the opportunities available to Murray at Penn-Mar and the way his brother is treated with dignity and respect.
From what I learned about Penn-Mar, I was certain my brother would have a richer, more varied quality of life, and I am confident he has. DAVID STANG As an executive with the Jack Daniels Distillery, he also appreciates Penn-Mar s strategic vision. What I value most about Penn-Mar is the way the organization works together to offer high-quality services and the desire to always do better. This has been good for my brother and my family, and I want to help continue this work. This is why David Stang and his wife, Robin, have decided to make a gift of life insurance to Penn-Mar s Endowment Fund. David has also named Penn-Mar Human Services as the beneficiary of his retirement plan.
THE TIES THAT BIND THE STORY OF Darlene and Keith Peterson Darlene and Keith Peterson feel a special kinship to Penn-Mar Human Services, even though they do not have a son or daughter receiving services from Penn-Mar s programs. Darlene, as a Special Education School Office Manager, and Keith, with his history of direct service and leadership positions serving people with special needs, have devoted their careers to that mission. For 20 years, Keith served in an executive capacity at Penn-Mar. For me, working for Penn-Mar was always more than a job, Keith says. It was a calling. I have met so many family members who would not accept the status quo. They have never stopped trying to provide their sons or daughters with better choices, better opportunities, and a better quality of life. They continue to be truly inspirational. For these reasons and more, Darlene and Keith have included Penn-Mar in their estate plans with a bequest. By including Penn-Mar in their will, Darlene and Keith believe they are demonstrating their commitment to all the individuals and families Penn-Mar serves. This decision was really very easy, Darlene mentioned. The people and inspirational stories of Penn-Mar have always touched our hearts, and we knew supporting the mission and the vision was something we just had to do. Keith agrees. When you work with children and adults with intellectual disabilities as Darlene and I have, you learn a disability never defines a person. Who they are is much more. It is for this reason Darlene and I wanted to invest in the future of this program and provide Penn-Mar with a legacy of our own.
The people and inspirational stories of Penn-Mar have always touched our hearts, and we knew supporting the mission and vision was something we just had to do.
