2 FROM OUR PTC Join other Eliot students and march in the New Year s Eve Masquerade Procession! The Eliot group will march behind an Eliot banner and will wear blue and white masks. We will provide the mask and decoration you provide the glue and imagination! 4 From the Eliot Office AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT ELIOT SCHOOL PARKING Last Friday, the police department visited the school during our winter concert and found numerous cars illegally parked. No parking tickets were issued but we were warned that the next time cars were found illegally parked, tickets would be issued. The Police Department has asked that I inform you of the following: When attending all school sponsored events no parking is allowed on either side of Wellesley Avenue. Also, absolutely, no parking is permitted around the driveway. In the case of an emergency, police and fire department vehicles would not be able to make the turn. The police suggest you park on Taylor Street, Ardmore Road, or on Central Avenue. For your walking convenience there is a pathway from Ardmore Road that leads directly to the Eliot School. Please see the map, for more detailed information. 6 Climate Action Committee And Green Kids Needham invite you to join us for a presentation from Sony Pictures Classics of: Who Killed the Electric Car? Did you know that the first electric engine was invented in 1859 by Thomas Davenport using un-rechargeable batteries? Did you know that over 100 years ago in the year 1900 an electric vehicle by BGS Company set the first distance record by traveling 180 miles on a single charge? Where did this technology go all these years past? Join us to learn more about the history of the electric engine and the important role it must play in the reduction of our dependence on oil powered vehicles and global warming. Date: Sunday, January 6, 2007 Time: 1:30 p.m. Where: Needham Public Library (Community Room) This free event is open to all so we hope you will gather up some friends and join us for an informative afternoon! 8 Darkness Visible William Styron s memoir about his descent into depression and suicide, and his triumph of recovery Wednesday January 23rd 6:00 8:00 pm Over the past few years, the Needham community has experienced several suicides that have impacted the town on many levels.~ To address this issue, last spring the Needham Coalition for Suicide Prevention offered a program entitled Out of the Darkness. One of the initiatives of the program was to encourage individuals as well as book groups/clubs to read and discuss the book Darkness Visible by William Styron.~ Given the sensitive and complex nature of this book, the Youth Commission with the support of the Needham Coalition for Suicide Prevention, would like to offer a special FREE edition of Books and Bridges for adults/parents only; to allow people the opportunity to not only discuss the book but to see how the messages of the text may apply to their own lives.~ Space will be limited to twenty participants and registration is mandatory.
