14 Promoting the Event WITH IN-SCHOOL ACCESS: Distribute sign-up event fliers the week before the sign-up event Poster and yard signs around the school School rally or Scout talks at the school Back-to-school openhouses events, school carnivals, meet-the-teacher, and conferences Electronic backpacks Invite current youth and parents to attend lunch at school in uniform Videos on in-school video networks School newsletter or website PTA/PTO newsletter School Marquee signs

15 Promoting the Event SCHOOL TALKS: Visit each classroom and excite the youth about Scouting Best if done class-by-class School assemblies are second best Make them energetic! Make them memorable! Don t overstay your welcome AN EXAMPLE!

16 Promoting the Event OUT OF SCHOOL PROMOTION: Ask current members to use social media to let their friends and family know about sign-up event nights. Personalized invitations, s, and personal phone calls to prospective parents. Door hangers and door-to-door invitations Recruit a friend and other peer to peer recruiting initiatives Fliers and Scout talks at after school programs and churches in the community. Church and community websites, calendars, and bulletins Press releases Billboards, posters, and yard signs in the community (businesses, churches, etc.) Community fairs, parades, an other events.

22 After the Sign-up Event is Over Applications, after review and signatures, are turned in to the District Executive ASAP. Welcome call follow-ups with new families within the week Invite new parents to den and pack meetings involve them in the life of the pack. Den Leaders should make welcome calls to new parents or send messages with meeting dates, location, pack calendars, and other important dates. Follow-up with the families who did not sign-up

23 Volunteer and Pro Tips Use the New Member Coordinator Use New Member Welcome Pins Recruit Den Leaders prior to the sign-up event and involve them in the welcome process. Encourage and educate new parents, throughout the event, about volunteer opportunities in the Cub Scout Pack. Have computer stations set-up to allow on-line registration and payment. Encourage all new Scout to bring a friend to the next meeting. Utilize well-uniformed Den Chiefs at the sign-up night. Concentrate on education instead of selling. Use plain English, avoid jargon UNIFORMS yes or no? Make sure an activity or event is planned soon after the signup night the council or district can control the message and promote the year-round activities of the council.
