Economic Security/Legal Reform for Women & Girls Center for the Advancement of Women in the Public Sphere (WIPS) at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute: The Gender Index: Monitoring and Promoting the Status of Women in Israel: Launched in 2012, the Gender Index measures the rates and trends of gender inequality in Israel across a variety of issues including but not limited to income, political representation, educational attainment, and rates of violence. This multidimensional tool monitors changes over time, and can be used to create a snapshot of the depth and breadth of gender inequality throughout the country. By raising awareness among data generating organizations, women s groups, and policy makers, this project demonstrates how gender specific data can and should be used to inform policy recommendations. Grant Amount: $20,000 Center for Women s Justice (CWJ): The Public Interest Litigation Project: This project promotes women s rights by filing precedent setting lawsuits in civil courts across Israel to address discriminatory decisions and policies decided by Israel s rabbinic courts. Get refusal and get extortion (husbands who refuse to grant their wives a divorce) are among the top priorities of these lawsuits. Through litigation and public awareness activities, CWJ challenges unfair rulings and wins monetary damages for wives who were denied a get, thereby deterring husbands from using the get as a tool for extortion. By promoting legal reform in the Israeli civil court system, this project secures justice and fair treatment for women throughout the country. Renewal Grant Amount: $20,000 Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation (CAASE): End Demand Illinois (EDI) Campaign: This organizing and advocacy campaign is dedicated to transforming Illinois response to prostitution and sex trafficking through pioneering legislative and policy reform. EDI is grounded in the belief that the sexual exploitation of women and girls through prostitution and sex trafficking will never end until our community focuses its resources on holding those who create and support the demand for the domestic sex trade (i.e. pimps, johns and traffickers) accountable. CAASE recognizes that systemic change can emerge through faith communities, and is committed to engaging the Jewish community in this important effort. Through this campaign CAASE will partner with leaders in the Chicagoland Jewish community to promote awareness and action. Renewal Grant Amount: $15,000 YEDID- The Association for Community Empowerment: Bread and Roses: Protecting Women from Workplace Abuse: This program sheds light on workplace abuse in Israel and develops policies and legislative reform to address the problem. The project specifically targets lowincome working women and concentrates on their right to earn a living in dignity. Under this project, YEDID will: educate women on their rights; provide women with individual assistance when their rights have been violated; organize employees to stand up to unfair employment practices; and advance national policy initiatives to ensure safe and humane working environments. This work promotes policy reform and helps improve the economic status and well-being of Israeli working women. Renewal Grant Amount: $20,000 1
WePower: The College for Women in Politics Training Program: WePower is dedicated to elevating women s status and representation by increasing the number of women who run and who are elected to public office in Israel. This project seeks to address the current disproportionate distribution of political power in Israel by helping women access the skills and knowledge they need to run, be elected and ultimately advocate for women s rights and representation in their new positions. Through this comprehensive training program, WePower will specifically target female candidates running for council or mayoral positions in the Israeli municipal elections. This work increases the number of women in high level decision making positions throughout the country, thereby impacting gender equality at all levels of Israeli society. Renewal Grant: $20,000 Education/Leadership Development for Women & Girls AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps: AVODAH engages Jews in their 20s and 30s in a year-long service-learning program to combat poverty and promote social justice. The program consists of: work placements at Chicagoland anti-poverty agencies; communal living of corps members; mentoring; and educational sessions that include social activist training, education on the dynamics of urban poverty, and Jewish study. JWF funding supports the incorporation of gender-specific education into the corps member s regular trainings. By increasing corps member s connection to social activism, civic engagement, and Jewish values, this program is developing the next generation of young female Jewish leaders and activists who are committed to social justice and gender equality. Renewal Grant Amount: $12,000 Camp Ramah in Wisconsin: Exploring Spirituality of Girls and Women in an Egalitarian Setting: This new program will bring a more intentional gender lens into camp programming, thereby maximizing existing opportunities for engagement and adding a supportive path for girls and young women who are interested in further exploring their spirituality, Jewish identity, and taking on new leadership roles at home and at camp. For the first time, Camp Ramah will develop and implement a new leadership curriculum for both female campers and counselors. The program will create a safe environment for young women to express their feelings while encouraging a wider understanding and acceptance of the meaning and power of an egalitarian community. Grant Amount $7,500 Jewish Child and Family Services (JCFS): BeTween: A Jewish Community Planning Initiative: This planning grant addresses the needs of Jewish girls in the Chicago metropolitan area during their often turbulent tween years (ages 9-14). The ultimate goal of this planning grant is to develop a comprehensive model program that will provide Jewish girls with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote their own leadership, health and identity. Drawing from input received from parents, service providers and teen girls, this project promotes a coordinated, sustainable initiative that cuts across community settings and nurtures all parts of a Jewish tween girl as she is becoming a woman. Renewal Grant Amount: $20,000 2
Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago: Ma yan Research Training Internship: This 15-month internship program provides a girls only space where participants engage in serious inquiry about the topics that matter most to them. This project helps girls develop critical thinking and research skills, and allows teens to engage in feminist discussions through bi-monthly meetings. RTI achieves a secondary goal of producing new, well-researched evidence of the needs and experiences of Jewish teen girls, which can be used by community professionals to improve existing programs. After successfully running this project in Manhattan for six years, Ma yan will replicate this model in Chicago through a partnership between Ma yan, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago and DePaul University s Beck Research Initiative for Women, Gender and Community. Grant Amount: $17,650 Health & Well-Being for Women & Girls The Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel (ARCCI): Legal Counseling and Representation of Victims of Sex Crimes: ARCCI is the umbrella organization representing the nine Rape Crisis Centers (RCCs) throughout Israel and provides free legal counseling and representation to victims of sexual assault. Under this project, ARCCI s Legal Advisors support the rights of victims by appealing to the Supreme Court on behalf of survivors, lobbying to change legislation, offering support and consultation to all RCCs, and raising public awareness on the issues facing victims of sex crimes. By addressing the deficiencies in Israel s legal system at the institutional level, ARCCI works to enhance the rights of sexual assault victims and strengthen the laws against sexual offenders. Renewal Grant Amount: $10,000 Eden Center: Crisis and Health Intervention Training for Israeli Mikvah Attendants: This new project seeks to change the objective of mikvah attendants from performance of the mikvah ritual to working towards becoming an advocate for women s health and well-being. Through a series of educational programs, mikvah attendants will address pressing issues such as domestic violence, post-partum depression and breast health. This project seeks to shift individual and community behavior by educating and empowering mikvah attendants to recognize, inform, and advocate for the myriad of women with whom they interface on a regular basis. Grant Amount: $20,000 Jewish Child and Family Services (JCARES): Safe and Meaningful Immersive Jewish Experiences: Under this project, JCARES will partner with Shorashim, the Chicago area s largest Birthright trip provider, to conduct the first ever violence prevention/awareness training and consultation for Birthright trip leaders. JCARES will develop a training curriculum for Birthright leaders that will equip them with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent, intervene and respond to unhealthy or abusive situations that may occur on these 10-day trips to Israel. This project will also assist Shorashim with creating and implementing internal protocols for trip leaders to use in response to inappropriate behaviors and concerns or allegations of abuse. Grant Amount $12,200 Multi-Year Grant to Promote Financial Literacy Among Jewish Women and Girls - Year 3 3
Jewish Vocational Services, Duman Entrepreneurship Center: The Jewish Teens and Women Credit, Asset Building and Savings Help Program (CASH): This project empowers Jewish female teens and women in the Chicago metropolitan area to build their overall financial capability skills and begin setting and achieving their personal financial goals. JVS hosts group educational programs covering topics such as: banking services, credit, consumer rights, saving, budgeting, borrowing money, paying for college, and home ownership. Participants also have the opportunity to meet individually with a JVS financial counselor to seek assistance with their personal financial questions and goals. This program spans ages, neighborhoods, and denominations of Judaism to increase financial literacy skills and promote the overall economic security of women and girls. Grant Amount: $20,000 per year for three years for a total of $60,000 third installment Jewish Women s Collaborative International Fund Shutafot: Women's Organizations for Gender Justice and Economic and Employment Equality: In 2012, 17 Jewish Women s Foundations (14 in the United States and 3 in Israel) pooled together resources to affect social change for women and girls in response to the increasing instances of discrimination against and exclusion of women from the public sphere in Israel. The result was the creation of an unprecedented multi-year collaborative grant initiative that would award $150,000 to one project in Israel over a two year time period. In 2013, this new funding collaborative awarded a grant to Shutafot, a new partnership consisting of 6 prominent women s organizations in Israel that joined together to form a strong coalition. The goal of this coalition is to elevate women s voices and perspectives in policy debates throughout the country. Through public awareness activities, lobbying and advocacy, Shutafot promotes equality and seeks to reduce gender gaps in Israel s economic, social and occupational spheres. Grant Amount: $5,000 per year second installment The Ellie Fund of the Jewish Women s Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago The OpEd Project: Write to Change the World Program for Young Jewish Women in Chicago: The OpEd Project is dedicated to increasing the volume of women s voices in key thought leadership forums to a tipping point. Through highly interactive group workshops, participants are challenged to think more carefully and expansively about their knowledge and experience, and why it matters. The Write to Change the World program will train young Chicago area Jewish women on the elements of making a powerful evidence-based argument and empower them to find their voice and make a case for the ideas and causes they believe in. Whether it be in print, online, TV, before a board of directors, potential funders, or on the steps of congress, participants see their knowledge and experience in more expansive terms and develop a sense of social obligation as they more clearly understand their potential impact on the world. Grant Amount: $14,000 4
Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation (CAASE): Empowering Young Men to End Sexual Exploitation Program: This school-based prevention program engages high school aged young men as allies in efforts to address and prevent sexual violence and exploitation. Through a series of workshops, young men learn about the exploitative dynamics and violence that exists in the sex trade to deter their involvement in this industry as consumers and facilitate a more personal understanding of how sexual violence and exploitation affects them and their communities. Companion sessions are also held with high school aged young women. Learning about sexual exploitation not only deters men from purchasing sex, it also has the possibility to effect change in young men s relationships with women as well as help them see how they can be part of the solution to end sexual exploitation and violence. Grant Amount: $12,000 Mavoi Satum: Justice and Support for All Legal Representation and Social Support for Mesoravot Get: Working in Israel, this project provides social and legal support to agunot, women whose husbands refuse to give them a religious divorce (get). For many women, the process of securing a get can take many years, and ongoing legal and social support is crucial to ensure that women s rights are protected. Through this project women receive individual legal consultation and representation in both civil and religious courts as well as social support to help them address feelings of powerlessness and rebuild their lives. Grant Amount: $20,000 Total 2013 JWF Grant Allocation: $265,350 5
