C-LIFELINE Annual Report _Layout 1 22/09/ :08 Page 2 Cancer Lifeline is recognised as a best practice example of a community sector organisation that is actively engaged both with the community and wider stakeholders in the provision of services that contribute to the overall health and wellbeing of the population in North Belfast that is living with cancer Locus Management 2016 A warm welcome to our Annual Report for 2016/ 2017 Cancer Lifeline continues to grow and develop as a vital support organisation for those coping with a cancer diagnosis and their families / carers in North Belfast. There are a lot of emotions to deal with when you have cancer. At 44 Alliance Avenue our home from home base provides a calm and welcoming haven of support services, helping people to manage their condition and its treatments in partnership with their health care professionals. Many people still associate cancer with death. However, improvements in screening and diagnostic procedures as well as cancer treatments mean that increasingly, people diagnosed with cancer are reaching survivorship stages of care. Referrals to our organisation continues to grow both from health professionals and selfreferrals from the community. Service users report a substantial and positive impact on their overall wellbeing as well as an increased awareness and understanding of cancer, associated treatments and support available. We hope this report gives you a sense of the critical support services delivered throughout the year and the impact of the work on individual and family lives. Our two charity shops continue to thrive and are not only a vital source of funds but a key point of contact to direct people to support. We are delighted to be working with the Belfast City Council in progressing the possible purchase and development of the property next door. Funding has been secured via the Belfast City Council, Belfast Investment Fund (B.I.F.). This will help us meet the growing demand for services, focusing on members needs, while embracing the challenge of changes within the health sector, addressing tightening financial constraints as well as continuing to develop partnership approaches to delivering services. Our sincere thanks to the many volunteers, helpers, donors, businesses, counsellors, organisations, funders, charity shop workers, therapists, individuals and families who have given their time, finance and or skills to support us. Without you, we would not be able to support those faced with a cancer diagnosis. We are indebted to you all for your dedication to the organisation. Board of Directors and Staff 2 3
C-LIFELINE Annual Report _Layout 1 22/09/ :08 Page 4 Support Services We know that every person with cancer is an individual and every cancer journey is unique. I have realised with support, that I am a survivor of my illness. Having cancer can affect every aspect of someone s life from the physical and emotional effects of the diagnosis and treatment, to relationships with loved ones and to their wider social and work life. With the rise in cancer survivorship, significant numbers of people are left to deal with the consequences, not just of having cancer, but also of the effects of the treatments they have received. All these changes emphasise the increasing need for cancer survivors and their families to be supported to take an active role in their recovery and ongoing care. By 2020 the projected number of cases diagnosed is expected to rise by 25% for men and 24% for women to 5443 and 5285 cases per year respectively. Hence the clear need to make sure people have access to information and support on emotional, practical and financial issues. Throughout the year individuals and their families / carers have accessed a range of key support services in a one to one and group setting. Tailored, user led, accessible support and information services has been crucial to: Reducing anxiety and stress levels Helping users develop coping skills Improving physical and mental wellbeing Improving the ability of individuals and families to manage living with cancer Increasing confidence in selfmanagement / self-care Supporting people to navigate the health and social care system Assistance to help make complex treatment decisions Signposting towards other appropriate information and support Facilitating links with health care specialists Reducing barriers to participation via provision of transport, reminder calls and outreach services when appropriate By 2020 the projected number of cases diagnosed is expected to rise by 25% for men and 24% for women 4 5

Some even go as far as saying that their very life was owing to the support received from Cancer Lifeline. They also highlighted that it wasn t just about the support but the way in which the support was delivered that contributed to service user satisfaction. They reported: The speed with which Cancer Lifeline worked to assist them The flexibility, often working after hours to ensure needs were met The familiarity and quality of relationships that were formed and which were built on trust and openness Members felt they were more than just a cancer patient Welcomed the non-clinical home from home environment Because services were local and accessible people felt much more comfortable about accessing support Welcomed the opportunity to share and gain support from others facing similar worries and fears Positive supportive atmosphere, where people felt cared for and listened to Following service users through their journey and helping to ensure that they attend their appointments and if not seeking to find out why Service that provides support in a holistic way This year there was a reported a benefit retrieval of approximately 237,
C-LIFELINE Annual Report _Layout 1 22/09/ :08 Page 8 Talking to others gives you information you can understand and comfort knowing you are not alone. The above positive feedback from service users is also reflected in the high level of recommendations of the service to others in the community, high up take of support after initial assessment, ongoing positive participation levels and acknowledgements of the support as well as continued fundraising and volunteering activities by members wanting to give something back to the service. Example of other support and information programmes facilitated throughout the year included; Monthly Bereavement Support Bimonthly Family Support Sessions (in conjunction with Cancer Focus NI) Fortnightly Female Support Group Weekly Creative workshops Peer Led experienced listening / peer support Carers Support Tailored Support for those aged 60+ Feel Good Factor Wellbeing mornings for males, females and carers Twice yearly information News-sheet Library information Advocacy Support Annual Volunteer Celebrations Many service users report that because services were local and accessible people felt much more comfortable about accessing support and felt they were more than just a cancer patient. 8 9
C-LIFELINE Annual Report _Layout 1 22/09/ :08 Page 10 The nutrition course was excellent; I have made changes to my lifestyle regarding healthier eating. Health Improvement Creating an environment that encourages and supports health is critical. We know that healthier lifestyle choices are easier to make when people and families are supported to develop their skills, knowledge and capacity to make decisions, that help maintain good health and wellbeing. Cancer prevention, early detection and timely treatment must remain a top priority within the health agenda. Cancer Lifeline offers a unique community response model of practice in addressing health improvement. 8 C-LIFELINE Annual Report _Layout 1 22/09/ :08 Page 14 The whole experience of coming to Cancer Lifeline was excellent; it helped me through a very difficult time in my life. Partnership Working Cancer Lifeline epitomises a best practice example of a local community based organisation working within the values and principles of the Public Health Strategy. The organisation s work is clearly aligned to the aims of the strategy. The work of Cancer Lifeline in supporting people to live with cancer, through providing vital support services, addressing stress management and for those more isolated, fostering social connections within their community; demonstrates that Cancer Lifeline s work is very much in keeping with the focus of the work of the Belfast Strategic Partnership.
