Your local charity supporting blind & partially sighted people ISSUE 53 DECEMBER 2017/JANUARY 2018 Editor: Jo Wood It s nearly that time again - the festive season is almost here and we have lots of fun activities planned for our members. We start getting into the holiday spirit with a fantastic Christmas Concert by the Wessex Chorus on Tuesday 5th December in the Rooper Hall (7.30pm). Please join us for a good old fashioned singalong to both traditional carols and popular festive songs. Hopefully you all received your invitation to our annual Christmas Lunch on Thursday 21st December. We are thrilled that one of our members favourite musical entertainers, Mr Paul Hammond, has agreed to join us. The Christmas Raffle will be drawn during the afternoon of the 21st so please keep selling Raffle Tickets for us - you can pick up more supplies of booklets in the office or call to ask us to send you more. We really appreciate your support with the Raffle; in 2016 we raised over 800 and would really love to hit our 1,000 target this year. We wish our members, volunteers and supporters a happy and healthy CHRISTMAS and best wishes for the NEW YEAR. The Centre will re-open on Tuesday 2nd January 2018.

Archery The Archery Group held their Presentation Evening in the Rooper Hall on Tuesday 31st October. The group have continued to make excellent progress during this year and enjoy a great camaraderie. We are very proud of all their efforts, again proving what people with impaired sight can achieve. Certificates were presented to all group members, with their personal best scores for the year. Alan Taylor and Jean Sparrowhawk also received special certificates for achieving 6 gold ends (meaning all 6 arrows shot entered the gold bullseye). Adele Forbes gained a certificate for shooting 10 golds in 3 dozen arrows and Royston Ashley s certificate celebrated his 32 golds in 1 session. Medals were awarded to John Blake for Archer of the Year ; to Chrissie Woodham as Most Consistent Archer and to Ken Dix as Most improved Archer. We thank Dave and Janice of Sagittarii Archery Club plus all their volunteers for their expert tuition, patience and enthusiasm. If anyone would like to join the Archery Group after the Christmas break, (Tuesday 9th January 2018) please call us on no previous experience is required. 2

Philip recently attended a presentation at The Sandbanks Hotel where the Wessex Chorus launched their 10th anniversary year. The Chorus have supported us for about two years. The Mayor of Bournemouth presented Philip with a publicity cheque for almost 3,700. This is the amount the choir have raised for the Society so far. Wessex Chorus The choir began in 2007 with only 12 singers. They now have over 40 members and have raised money for charities such as Help & Care, Round Table Children s Wish, the Bournemouth Alzheimer s Group and Youth Cancer Trust. The Chorus is currently rehearsing for a series of Christmas events and we excitedly await their Concert here in our Hall: Christmas Concert by Tuesday 5th December 2017 Tickets: 5 Raffle & Refreshments for Sale Doors open 7pm for 7.30pm start Tel for tickets 3

Sight and Hearing Resource Centre Open from 10am - 1pm Monday - Friday New products in the Resource Centre include: Talking Cooking Thermometer ( 21.30); MedCenter Talking Alarm Clock and Medication Reminder ( 42); Grater ( 6) and Glowmat ( 6) Calendars and Diaries are now in stock or can be ordered. We also have broad tip pens, signature and envelope guides to help you when writing your Christmas cards. Christmas may be a good time to ask your family or friends to buy you presents from the Resource Centre. Talking watches, large print quiz books, large print games or playing cards are all good ideas. Demonstration Day Our Demonstration Day held in October attracted over 100 visitors. A great deal of positive feedback was received and people enjoyed finding out about all types of new products to assist with sight and/or hearing impairments. We hope to hold a similar event later next year. In the Community Our Counsellor Marie Evans talked about emotional support for people with Charles Bonnet syndrome at the Bournemouth Hospital s Macular Forum on Saturday 18th November. On the same day, Philip spoke to Concern With Hearing Dorset about the services we offer to people who are hard of hearing, including the drop-in coffee morning on the second Wednesday of each month. 4

Fundraising Thanks We thank everyone for their continued generous support of our Society. The September Quiz raised an amazing 1,155. Please note the dates for the 2018 Quiz Nights on Page 7. October s Bingo Night raised 520. Thank you to everyone who attended and we look forward to welcoming you all again on Saturday 27th January.
