2 THE MISSION Crime Prevention through athletics, education and recreation. It is the mission of the Police Athletic League of St. Petersburg to provide crime prevention programs that utilize education, recreation and athletics to facilitate a positive relationship between police of icers and the community. THE HISTORY The Police Athletic League of St. Petersburg, Inc. (PALSP) was founded in Its primary purpose is to address the needs of youth labeled disadvantaged and/or at-risk and the potential negative involvement with law enforcement. PALSP offers rewarding and challenging after-school, evening, and weekend activities to children ranging in age from Our programs in education include an after-school and summer program that provide children with enriching activities that they would not experience within their daily lives. These activities include itness, art, lag rugby, cultural ield trips, writing workshops, music, drama, and character education with St. Petersburg Police Department of icers. Our Athletics Program includes wrestling, basketball, baseball, and track & ield. Our newest program is beach volleyball. THE GOAL Our goal is to provide youth with opportunities to become involved in alternative activities to crime. We offer youth opportunities to enrich their self-esteem and teambuilding skills in a structured, non-threatening environment which insulates them from crime during the peak hours of violence involving youth. Our programs are structured to address various issues including gang involvement, good choices vs. bad choices, goal setting, stranger danger, etc. Through our programs, we are proud to say that we make a difference in the lives of approximately 300 children and teens every year. THE SUPPORT It is impossible for PALSP to continue to directly impact the lives of children and the St. Petersburg community without the support of caring individuals, corporate sponsorship, and contributions of local businesses. Our partners are diverse from small to large companies and individuals who can give small amounts to many thousands of dollars. They all share the same philosophy, we can t arrest our way out of juvenile crime, we must prevent it. And so all these supporters invested in the Police Athletic League of St. Petersburg to make a difference in the lives of our kids, and to make our community a better place to live.
