2 Our Mission Heart to Heart International strengthens communities through improving health access, providing humanitarian development and crisis relief worldwide. We engage volunteers, collaborate with partners and deploy resources to achieve this mission. Our History At the close of the Cold War, Dr. Gary Morsch, a family physician from the Kansas City Metro area, traveled with several other medical professionals to Russia in an effort to assess the state of patient care. The group toured many first- rate facilities, meeting many qualified physicians but pharmacies were empty. They witnessed a healthcare system on the brink of collapse. Motivated by the trip, Dr. Morsch challenged the Olathe Rotary Club to help provide medicines and supplies to hospitals in Moscow. Collection drives spread across Kansas City. Major pharmaceutical companies joined the effort by donating much- needed product. The United States government became involved, providing the largest Air Force cargo plane in its fleet to fly the medical aid to Russia. On May 22, 1992, the C- 5A Galaxy aircraft landed in Moscow. Seventy- five tons of donated aid was distributed to 28 area hospitals. Patients began receiving the care they needed. A gift from the heart of America to the heart of Russia the Heart to Heart Airlift became a reality because hundreds of volunteers and generous corporate partners joined together to help people in need. At the time, it was the largest, private humanitarian airlift in U.S. history. The momentum from that first effort was so great that it launched Heart to Heart International (HHI) which now helps to provide healthcare services and medicines to people in need domestically and internationally. 3 What We re All About At HHI, we believe in creating Access to Healthcare, helping People in Crisis and working with people and partners on Improving Communities. HHI works on a number of fronts to address a number of needs around the U.S. and around the world. Crisis Response HHI responds when people are harmed by natural disasters or are threatened by other crisis. We deliver targeted shipments of relief aid and deploy teams of trained medical personnel. Recent deployments took us to Nepal after the earthquake and to Liberia to fight the global threat of Ebola. Medical Aid & Supply Each year, HHI receives approximately $100 million in corporate donations of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals, which are then available to safety net clinics and medical teams in the U.S. and around the world. We are currently working with a hospital in Cuba to deliver needed medical supplies. Rural Health We have launched an effort to address healthcare needs in the rural heart of America. Starting in the Bootheel of Missouri, we have begun working with partners and local stakeholders to develop ways to increase access to healthcare and increase positive health outcomes. Medical Services In SE Haiti we provide the only healthcare available to approximately 250,000 people. Our Haitian medical teams work out of 16 fixed and mobile clinics across this region weekly and are currently providing medical care in refugee camps along the Dominican Republic border. Community Development Our work to improve communities is showcased through our efforts to develop federations in Haiti - grassroots groups that address local needs, and through our work with Kore Fanmi - a joint effort with UNICEF that connects vulnerable populations in Haiti with community and medical services. Laboratory Improvement HHI conducts WHO laboratory standards training in places like Haiti and Papua New Guinea to improve patient services. HHI also provides guidance and equipment to build on- site laboratories in U.S. safety- net clinics, and helps to increase lab services for vulnerable populations. Volunteering HHI provides opportunities for individuals and companies/organizations to make a positive difference in their world by volunteering on a number of fronts - from health events, to Care Kit Assembly Events, to working in our Operations Hub, to traveling on medical service trips.
