As a formidable adversary in the battle to find a cure for childhood cancer for nearly four decades, CURE Childhood Cancer (CURE) is recognized locally and nationally for its work to fund research, support families and inspire the next generation of pediatric oncologists and researchers. Tremendous progress has been made and childhood cancer survival rates are now at 80%. CURE is determined to help find a cure for childhood cancer in this lifetime. The Director of Development will play an integral role in this effort. The organization aspires to grow CURE s level of support, increase the impact of its programs and help as many familes as possible cope with the diagnosis and rigors of treatment. Through compassionate outreach, acute understanding of the illness, a hands-on approach and an authentic desire to support patients and families, CURE s programs help a wide spectrum of the childhood cancer community confront the disease.

To reach its aspirations, CURE is seeking a strong, accomplished and dynamic development professional who will help advance the organization s fundraising capacity and be a passionate advocate for CURE s mission. The mandate for the will include: As the senior development officer for CURE, capably and consistently leading the development functions of the organization. Managing, developing and coordinating the work of the development staff. Representing CURE s mission, programs and message with important stakeholders and helping to activate a broad segment of the community behind CURE s mission. Serving as a successful strategic partner and committed teammate of the Executive Director, the Board of Directors, CURE staff, patients and families. Growing the level of support for CURE and its programs. The opportunity for the is bold and compelling: To take CURE s development efforts to the next level. The Director of Development will play a critical role and expand the fundraising capacity of the organization. Bringing a combination of relevant experience and authentic passion to the role, the Director will work in concert with the Executive Director and Board to broaden support, build new relationships and raise the level of urgency around CURE s mission in the community and important philanthropic circles. THE ORGANIZATION Cancer is the number one cause of death by disease in children. This devastating condition will impact nearly 16,000 children this year more than 430 of them in Georgia - and, even more sadly, one of every five children who are diagnosed with cancer will not survive. In spite of these sobering statistics, only 3% of federal funding for cancer research is focused on childhood cancers. CURE was founded in 1975 as a grassroots organization with one simple mission to save lives. The organization was the brainchild of Emory University pediatric oncologist, Dr. Abdel

3 Page 3 of 7 Ragab, who saw a desperate need for a specific focus on pediatric oncology research. Together, Dr. Ragab and a group of committed parents launched CURE and the organization began its work. Today, CURE is a strong and committed organization focused solely on childhood cancers with an annual budget of over $3.6 million. The impact of the organization is impressive and targets three key priorities: funding research initiatives, supporting the training of pediatric oncology fellows at Emory University, and directing a series of programs that support patients and their families in addressing their most critical and urgent needs. Led with passion and purpose by Executive Director Kristin Connor, CURE is literally helping save lives and improve the quality of life for those individuals and families that confront the battle with childhood cancer. In , CURE is funding $2.6 million in research for 16 major studies at Emory University, Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children s Healthcare of Atlanta, Memorial Sloan Cancer Center, St. Jude Children s Research Hospital and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. CURE s work also helps support the training of pediatric oncologists, providing full support for three pediatric oncology fellows at Emory University. CURE s Mission Statement: CURE Childhood Cancer is dedicated to conquering childhood cancer through funding targeted research and through support of patients and their families. CURE s patient and family services are a critical part of CURE s mission. Programs include: Early Outreach - a program that connects with families at the time of diagnosis and provides information, support and a network of help as families begin treatment and the process of understanding the path ahead. Caring for the Caregiver programming that is aimed at supporting the frontline caregivers, i.e. the nurses and family support teams in the hospitals who care for the entire family when a child has cancer. CURE provides specific outreach such as grief support, pick-me-ups and gestures of appreciation which are all designed to help these incredible caregivers cope. Critical and urgent needs care support services that provide tangible, immediate help for families such as: o Emergency financial assistance to families of children with cancer o Transportation assistance o Open Arms a twice-weekly meal program that provides meals, comfort and compassionate fellowship for in-patient families at Scottish Rite

4 Page 4 of 7 and Egleston campuses of the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children s Healthcare of Atlanta o Professional counseling services for all members of a patient s family o Bereavement support for families who have lost a child to cancer CURE s organizational culture is unique. It is defined by values that include accountability, passion, reliability, partnership and constant focus on fulfillment of organizational mission. Thanks to an engaged Board, a strong, committed staff and an army of loyal donors and volunteers, CURE is financially healthy, has compelling clarity of purpose and is comprised of and supported by people who view the battle to beat childhood cancer as a calling. THE RESPONSIBILITIES CURE s new will bring a record of success in fundraising and resource cultivation, particularly in annual campaign planning, major gifts and donor relations. She or he will be experienced in the development discipline. The Director will be passionate about the mission of CURE and adept at translating that passion into engagement and support. Specifically, the will: 1. Lead organizational fundraising efforts as the senior development officer for CURE. The will be a warm, personable and effective leader with significant fundraising accomplishments and expertise. In particular, she or he will bring strong competencies in fundraising, cultivating major gifts and incubating and developing corporate partnerships. The Director of Development will work with the Executive Director and the Board in the development of comprehensive fundraising strategies, plans and innovative approaches that result in increased resource growth and mission accomplishment for CURE. 2. Manage, mentor and support CURE s development programs and staff. The will be a collaborative, inclusive individual capable of organizing, managing and executing all aspects of development planning and implementation. She or he will have experience with annual campaigns, planned giving, current development tools, online philanthropy and social media. The is responsible for all aspects of resource acquisition including donor cultivation and stewardship, grant writing and exploration of new contributed revenue opportunities. 3. Be an effective external representative of CURE and skillfully advocate for its mission. The will be able to energetically

5 Page 5 of 7 communicate the vision, mission and impact of CURE in a way that compels engagement and support. In a wide variety of contexts, the Director of Development will deliver clear and consistent institutional messages and persuasive rationale for supporting CURE. 4. Partner with the Executive Director, the Board and critical community partners. The Director of Development will have experience as an internal and external partner and a facility for developing and nurturing partnerships and relationships. By providing a strong foundation of planning and direction regarding CURE s goals, he or she will engage and activate Board members and other supporters and will facilitate new partnerships on behalf of CURE s mission. The Director of Development will play a role in ensuring that partnerships are effective economically, are related to mission and advance CURE s strategic priorities. 5. Grow and diversify the level of support for the organization. The new Director will build organizational resources and relationships in tandem with the aspirations of the Executive Director, the Board of Directors and that are aligned with long-term strategic planning. Growing and strengthening current donor and institutional relationships as well as identifying and engaging new individuals and entities in CURE s efforts will be a major priority for the organization, the development staff and the Director. THE CANDIDATE The ideal candidate is an experienced development professional with an established history of successful fundraising, relationship-building and a passion for CURE s mission. Commitment to the fight against childhood cancer and material experience in the philanthropic field are essential. Knowledge of healthcare, research organizations or similar fundraising environments is highly valued. Personal assets will include humility, a collaborative spirit, high emotional intelligence, listening and communication skills and confidence born of authentic ability. Assets being sought include: The ability to build consensus around common vision and goals. The ability to handle multiple initiatives simultaneously

6 Page 6 of 7 and to be accountable for and successfully manage deadlines, goals and budgets. Flexibility and a willingness to play both lead and supportive roles as part of a team. Comfort, maturity and professionalism in a wide variety of professional and philanthropic settings. Optimism and a warm personality. A strong work ethic and a strong sense of self-direction towards outcomes. The ability to balance high-level visioning with reliable and consistent execution. The ability to design and implement an effective development plan that includes systems, processes and metrics. A sense of humor. The ability to communicate compellingly and convincingly in a wide spectrum of settings, and to demonstrate passion for CURE s mission. THE RELATIONSHIPS The will report to the Executive Director and manage three full-time and one part-time staff as well as relationships with high-level volunteers and donors. The will be the senior development officer of the organization, an integral and trusted advisor to the Executive Director, part of CURE s senior leadership team and a key member of a loyal and dedicated team of 10 employees.
