Starlight Movie Month FUNDRAISING TOOL KIT 2015 Raising funds to help Starlight continue to inspire the imaginations of sick kids 20003
YOUR FUNDRAISING TOOL KIT Welcome to your 2015 Starlight Movie Month Fundraising Tool Kit. Hosting a Starlight Movie Party is a fun, social, and rewarding way to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families across Australia. Movies are an important escape for everyone, especially when you re feeling sick. Entertainment and positive distraction are at the core of all Starlight s programs and the funds you raise will help continue to inspire the imaginations of sick kids and brighten their hospital experience by replacing pain, fear and boredom with fun, joy and laughter. Don t forget to let us know you re hosting a Starlight Movie Party by registering online at. We hope that this tool kit offers you everything you need to host your event and fundraise for Starlight. Inside you will find helpful ideas and tips, handy posters and templates. Plus, throughout the kit we ll demonstrate how your fundraising will be making such a huge impact on the lives of sick kids. Remember, you don t have to fundraise alone so be sure to recruit your family, friends and colleagues too! Good luck and happy FUNdraising! Walt Disney
PLANNING YOUR STARLIGHT MOVIE PARTY WHERE Home Make sure you ve got enough room to host the number of people you re inviting whether it s for a screening, quiz night, dinner or party. If you re hosting a large group, consider hiring or borrowing chairs, bean bags or speakers to make sure everyone is comfortable. Remember that a Starlight Movie Party can be as big or as small as you like! Cinema If you think you ll have lots of people at your Starlight Movie Party event why not approach your local cinema? Work with them to organise an event where all or part of the proceeds from tickets and snacks go to Starlight. Publicise the event to your networks, in the local media and in all your local clubs, and encourage everyone in the community to attend. Work Why not turn your Friday night drinks into a movie themed party? Kick off the weekend with prizes for the best dressed movie star and a game of trivia! In the community Consider throwing a movie themed bash at your local community hall, Scouts club, dance school or sports club. It s the perfect way to unite the community and together raise funds to support Starlight. TICKETS Star Tip: Don t forget a wet weather plan if your event is outside! Consider whether you would like your guests to purchase tickets prior to your event, or whether a fee will be charged at the door. We recommend selling the majority of tickets prior to the event as this will make sure they are committed to attend. If you are hosting a movie night at your local cinema, discuss with them how best to organise ticket sales. Audrey Hepburn
EVENT IDEAS AND THEMING Choose your event type Starlight Movie Parties can be anything you want them to be you re only limited by your imagination Choose A Theme Here are some of our favourites to get you started! Die-Hard trilogy boys night Movie Screening at home, under the stars in your backyard or at your local cinema Dress up transport your guests to another world or time! Dinner Party for the sophisticated A-lister types! Music from the Movies have the time of your life dancing to the classics! Toy Story marathon for the kids Sex And The City Night in with the girls Star Wars James Bond Give your event the wow factor and match your décor with your theme! Your event can also pay homage to the capital of movies, Hollywood! Roll out a red carpet and block off your entrance with a velvet rope. Station a guest at the door with a clipboard, checking the list and collecting their entry fee. Quiz Night cue the movie trivia! Movie Marathon bring out the trilogies and series! Star Tip: Enlisting a door person to sell raffle tickets and having the draw during your event is also a great way to raise more funds on the night! Kid s party make them the superheros for a day!
SET A FUNDRAISING TARGET AND ASK It s important to set yourself a fundraising target so your supporters know what you are trying to achieve. Every dollar you raise will help Starlight brighten the hospital experience for over 146,000 seriously ill children and their families each year! If you collect funds at your event we ask that you bank funds within 14 days of hosting your event. Don t forget to visit our website to see all the wonderful things your money can do. Virtual Guests Naturally some of your friends won t be able to attend your event but will still want to support you in your fundraising. You could do something fun and quirky in return for their donation like printing their picture and sticking it on a balloon at your event. Be sure to take a picture of their balloon with other guests and send it to them so they still feel part of the fun! Woody, Toy Story
SPREAD THE WORD Send out invitations EVENT TICKETS You can create invitations by using our editable templates. Plus, promote your event through our editable posters or print smaller versions as flyers. Visit to download resources for your event. POSTERS Social Media Don t forget to spread the word on social media and get your friends and family to do the same! PLANNING CALENDARS
HELPFUL HINTS AND TIPS Make it as easy as possible for your guests to support your Starlight Movie Party event before, during and after! Open with a quiz Break the ice with your guests and start by holding a movie quiz with guests that don t know each other on different teams. Ticket pricing Set the price of your ticket based on the type of event you are hosting anything between $20-$50 depending on what is included in the price. If you are hosting a movie screening at home, ask your guests to donate what they would normally pay for going out to the cinema. Double your donations Host your Starlight Movie Party in a local cinema and ask the cinema to match the funds raised during the event or donate all/percentage of ticket and snack sales. Set up a donation box Have a donation box or jar at your event. Hold a raffle Source prizes from your local community; you only need four or five prizes to make it worthwhile for your guest. Make it fun and entertaining by writing the prizes on paper and placing them in the balloons before blowing up. Guests can buy a raffle ticket and pop a balloon to see what they have won! Movie bingo Design cards based on your theme or whichever film you are screening. Put famous phrases or expressions in different squares, and see who calls out Bingo! when they match four in a row. Create an event on Facebook Create an event on Facebook, share your event details, include a link to your fundraising page and post photos afterwards.

Addressee Name Company Name Street Address City, State Postcode To whom it may concern, This September is Starlight Movie Month, an Australia wide campaign helping to raise over $420,000 to help brighten the hospital experience for seriously ill children and their families. This letter is to confirm that the below fundraiser/s will be taking part by hosting their own event where they aim to raise much needed funds for the Starlight Children s Foundation. NAME OF FUNDRAISER/S: Name Here NAME OF EVENT: Name Here DATE: Date Here FUNDRAISING GOAL: Goal Here Movies are an important escape for everyone, especially when you re feeling sick. Just ask the kids who have been in hospital, some for long periods of time. For these children, it s this time spent in hospital that steals away their precious childhood and so movies and entertainment become a powerful escape from the pain, fear and boredom they experience. It s one of many positive distraction techniques Starlight uses in their innovative programs. While health professionals focus on treating the illness, Starlight is focusing on the child lifting their spirits and improving wellbeing. Starlight is a very good example of what miracles are all about. Because of the work and the facilities Starlight provide, our children actually look forward to visiting the hospital for treatment. Starlight Parent With limited funds and no government funding, Starlight relies on the community s support to deliver programs in every children s hospital across Australia, seven days a week. We would be delighted if you could support this amazing event and help us brighten the lives of seriously ill children, teenagers, and their families. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me on or visit our website. Thank you for your support! Sincerely, Lucy MacLennan National Projects Coordinator
