2 WORKERS DEFENSE PROJECT The Mission Workers Defense Project is a membership-based organization that empowers low-wage workers to achieve fair employment through education, direct services organizing and strategic partnerships. The Need The Texas construction industry is booming! Yet, despite the industry's enormous size and wealth, Texas construction workers - a large proportion of whom are Latino immigrants - consistently suffer poverty level wages, dangerous working conditions and abuse of their rights. Our Approach We combat these disturbing trends and achieve justice for working families using a two-pronged approach. We empower low wage workers directly through our education programs, legal services and organizing efforts. At the same time, we seek large-scale systemic change through our policy and research and Better Builder programs. Recent Achievements Recovered $239,921 in back wages and injury compensation Trained 2,811 workers on their employment rights and how to defend them Ensured fair wages and safe working conditions for 4,619 construction workers through the Better Builder Program
