1 Lions Roar Palatine Lions Club P. O. Box 441 Palatine, IL Have you Visited our Club website lately???? 1st Guest Night coming Oct. 18th Our first guest/spouse night of the year will be held at the upcoming October 18th meeting. For those of you that may be new members or are not aware of what this night consists of, it is very simply an evening that you can bring your spouse, a potential member or another guest to the meeting. We traditionally have a great speaker lined up for the meeting. (Potential members are guests of the Club. Spouse are required to pay.) At this meeting our guest speaker will be State Senator Matt Murphy. The Senator resides in Palatine and will be speaking to us followed by a time that you can ask questions. These meeting are great ones to bring potential members to as well because there will be more people in attendance that he prospective member can meet. We generally also provide a recap of the events that the Club has completed and discuss what the Club is working on and the goals for the year. There will also be a couple of awards that will be handed out. You will not want to miss those. NOTE: Remaining Spouse/Guest night dates for the year are as follows: December 6th Christmas Party February 1st Guest Speaker May 15th Scholarship Night June 19th New Officer Induction Please mark your calendars so you do not miss these upcoming special meetings. Golf Outing Recap Our Club s 0th Annual event took place recently. Due to the inclement weather it needed to be postponed from our original date of August 9th to the new date of September 0th. This was the first time in 0 years that we have been forced to make a change to our event. The final results are still being tabulated, but from a first glance it appears that this year was our most profitable on record. More details next month... Volume, Issue October 5, 007 Inside this issue: Guest Speakers for Future Meetings Newsletter Editor Wanted Calendar of Upcoming Events Lions PR & New Member Recruitment Mt Prospect Corned Beef Dinner Cash for Cans Program Screenings for Macular Degeneration 3 3 s 4 5 Annual Club Dues Lion Secretary Britta Schneider issued dues notices at the last meeting. She will be mailing the notices to those that were not at the meeting. The annual dues are $75 and should be paid as soon as possible. Our dues and Tailtwister fines are the ONLY funds we can use to run our Club. So please pay promptly.

Make a note of these upcoming events to put on your calendar now. FUNDRAISING Candy Days Our street corner solicitations will be held on Friday & Saturday October 1th & 13th. The funds we raise help support our Lions of Illinois Foundation programs, such as Camp Lions, Hearing Bus, Macular Degeneration Screenings, Infant Screenings, Low Vision Screenings, etc. IF YOU KNOW OF A GROUP THAT IS INTERESTED IN HELPING PLEASE LET LION PECKHAM KNOW. MORE BODIES MEAN MORE FUNDS RAISED. Purple & Gold Raffle Please try to sell your tickets and return your money and ticket stubs to Lion Gerry Ross as soon as possible. Also, let Gerry know if you need additional tickets. You can sell them up until the time of the first drawing, which will take place at our October 18th meeting. Tootsie Pop Days May nd & 3rd will be upon us before you know it. This collection benefits our Lions of IL Foundation (see Candy Days). Be sure and mark your calendar. We could use group assistance. SOCIAL & COMMUNITY Hearing Bus Screening at Palatine Township-Saturday October 7th from 9:00-1:00. Recycling Efforts-We collect used eyeglasses, hearing aids, cell phones, keys and ink jet cartridges for our Lions of Illinois Foundation that are recycled and used by others (eyeglasses and hearing aids) or are sold to companies. 3 Volume, Issue Page 3 Have you noticed any of the Lions billboards in your travels around the Chicagoland area??? The above billboard has appeared 0 different times throughout the area including Antioch, Grayslake, Gurnee, Lake Villa, Mundelein, North Chicago and Waukegan. There is a program that the District supplied funds for last year that were matched by Lions International in order to promote our efforts and recruit new members. Hopefully this is just a first step in additional visibility for Lions Clubs in our area. We certainly try to do our share in getting our events published in the local papers. Do you have any ideas on how we can do more? Please bring your ideas forward, let s discuss them. New Member Recruitment Event We have recently been discussing that we should hold a new member recruitment event. Some of the ideas have been to do a postcard mailing to a number of households in Palatine. This would be used in conjunction with other means of communicating, including a press release, distributing flyers and the good old fashioned way of one on one contact of inviting potential members to attend. The Library was discussed as the sight that would be the easiest for people to find and the least expensive for us to use. Do you have any ideas on what you think would appeal to potential members? What should we plan on telling them to get them to attend? What should we have on the agenda to communicate to them the night of the event? Please provide Lion President BC with your thoughts. A special committee will need to be formed to work out the details so we can schedule the event and make it one that secures some new members. How can you help our Club grow????? Mt Prospect Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner Many of you have attended this annual event and have expressed interest again for this year. Please let me know by the October 18th meeting if you are interested in attending and I will get the tickets. We have had 8-10 people go each year for the last several years. It is a great time and the Corned Beef is catered by Harrington s of Chicago. The all-you-can-eat dinner (that also includes soda, wine and beer) will be held on Friday November nd in Mt Prospect at St Paul Lutheran School gymnasium (18 S School St). Tickets are $5. I am not sure of the time, but I believe it begins at around 6:30. The exact time will be provided later. Please let me know if you want to attend and then give me a check so that I may order the correct number of tickets. Lion Paul
4 Volume, Issue Page 4 Cash for Cans sends Kids to Camp (Note: This article was submitted by Lion Jim Wilson of Barrington and first appeared in the Governor s October Newsletter.) The Barrington Lions Club has been sending this message to all friends, neighbors and businesses in our area for the past three years. Slow to start, it has begun to gain momentum outside of the local area and into some of the neighboring suburbs thanks to fellow Lions like Paul Pioch in Palatine, our District Sunshine Queen, Alice Terrill, in Long Grove and the Lions Den in Lake Zurich. The collection of aluminum in can form - or ANY ALUMINUM METAL - has been successful when the number of participants is noted. We started with the big green monster parked in ACE Hardware lot in Barrington and the help of the Scouts from Troop 1, the monster was filled in 006 and emptied for recycling. The current shed parked in the same spot now receives the collections, which have produced the following numbers: YEAR POUNDS MONEY $ TOTAL 1480 $ The above has been donated to the Lions of Illinois Foundation to finance sending hearing and sight impaired kids to Camp Lions. Anyone who collects aluminum cans for our project can drop the bags or containers off anytime. You won't miss the shed. It's located in the rear of the ACE Hardware parking lot on Highway 14 in Barrington. ACE is located just one block west of Highway 59 (Hough Street) on Highway 14. We take aluminum wheels, aluminum siding, aluminum doors, and any other kinds of metal such as brass, copper, etc. PLEASE...NO FOIL PANS OR WRAP!! They won't accept it for our recycling purposes. Streetfest 007 Results Lion 1st VP Tom Peckham was the one that chaired this event for the Club this year. Not to say that he did not have some assistance from some more experienced Lions that have taken the reins of this project in the past. This year s event was the most profitable Corn Booth anyone can ever remember. The weather was great for the event. It didn t hurt that a recent storm knocked out power to many of the surrounding areas residents and that they must have felt it was easier to come to Streetfest than to try and stay at home to cook. Great job Lion Tom. Congratulations on a good event and thanks to everyone that volunteered to make it a profitable one as well. The increased results just means that we can assist more people in need.
5 WE SERVE Palatine Lions Club P. O. Box 441 Palatine, IL H AVE YOU VISITED OUR CLUB WEBSITE LATELY???? Macular Degeneration Screening a Success Our screening was held at the Palatine Township Offices on September 5th. This is only the second time that we sponsored the screening. The first was years ago and we screened individuals at that time. This year we screened 43 people in just four hours. We had some very good publicity about the screening. Our information appeared in the Palatine Township quarterly newsletter, it was posted on their marquis sign in front of their building for two weeks prior to the event, PR releases appeared in the local newspapers, flyers were sent to all of the churches in the area as well as the senior center and hopefully our own Lions distributed flyers and told their friends and neighbors about the screening. Lions Ray and Paul worked at the event and passed out information about our Club and how we help the community. One person even asked about joining. What a terrific improvement. It made the entire effort worthwhile.
Lions Roar. It is Christmas time. Hopefully you will be able to join in the Club s annual event later this week, Wednesday December 15th.
