Chief Executive Officer Job Information Pack 2018

Thank you for your interest in the role of Chief Executive Officer for Somerset and Avon Rape and Sexual Abuse Support (SARSAS). Following a successful bid to the Ministry of Justice, Bristol Rape Crisis widened its remit and geographical reach in 2013 and was renamed SARSAS (Somerset and Avon Rape and Sexual Abuse Support). SARSAS is the specialist support service for survivors of rape and sexual abuse across Bristol, Bath, North East Somerset, North Somerset, Somerset, and South Gloucestershire. We work on a hub and spoke model in eight locations dispersed widely across urban and rural areas in Bath, Bristol, Bridgwater, Yate, Minehead, Glastonbury, Taunton, Yeovil and Westonsuper-Mare. Bristol and Taunton are our main office bases. SARSAS safeguards and relieves the trauma, fear, isolation and distress of survivors who have experienced any form of sexual violence, however long ago, through the provision of trauma focused, client-centred support, counselling and information. We believe in the resilience and power of people, their ability to achieve post traumatic growth and the strength of survivors to learn to live with their past experiences and rebuild their lives with the right support. We provide public education about sexual violence and raise awareness of the impacts of rape and sexual abuse on the survivor and wider society. In the last five years SARSAS has grown from a staff team of three to a staff team of 26 with over 45 volunteers. SARSAS is a full member of Rape Crisis England and Wales and meets 100% of their specialist service standards. We are a women led organisation and recognise sexual violence as a gendered crime. We are rooted in feminism recognising the importance of equality, empowerment and the dynamics of power and control within sexual violence. Providing the right service to all survivors at the right time is a priority for our development going forward. SARSAS is at an exciting stage with a great track record of innovation, partnership work and developing and delivering an excellent range of services and resources. SARSAS initially led and co-developed the Bristol Sexual Violence Support Consortium which continues to go from strength to strength. The members are SARSAS, The Green House, Womankind Therapy Services, Barnardo s and the Southmead Project. It has widened its remit and is currently being independently managed and developed by an Innovations Manager employed by VOSCUR. The direction of this work includes delivering a sexual violence needs assessment for all 5 counties in our area, exploring a shared database with partner organisations, developing a new triage assessment and producing a national tool kit for sexual violence consortia. This will be a critical part of the CEO role going forward. Securing new premises and developing a Somerset Trauma Hub with partner agencies will also be a priority for the CEO within the first year.

Other key partnerships include working with Barnardo s in Somerset to deliver the Somerset Phoenix services; working alongside and training and advising the local workforce to children and young people who have survived childhood sexual abuse. SARSAS are active members of the Sexual Violence Reference Group in Bristol and represent this forum on the Domestic and Sexual Abuse Strategic Group. Contributing to the working group for developing the first sexual abuse strategy for North Somerset is also a priority for this role. SARSAS work closely with the SARC, Safelink and the Green House providing services across Avon and Somerset in a collaborative way, reducing duplication, sharing premises and increasing choice and access to services. In this pack, you will find information about SARSAS, the role of the Chief Executive Officer and information on how to apply for this exciting post. We thank you for your interest in this opportunity and look forward to hearing from you. Claire Stewart Hall Chair of SARSAS Board of Trustees

SARSAS Services SARSAS runs a helpline five days a week, an encrypted support service, group work and 1-1 support. We have a team of Specialist Support Workers who work with women who have more barriers to attending services, are struggling more to cope and have additional complex needs such as learning disabilities, drug and alcohol misuse or mental health problems. Outcomes include stabilisation, increasing healthy coping strategies and resources and better care co-ordination. We provide counselling and are an organisational member of BACP. We have recently piloted and evaluated a successful solution focussed therapy service in Bristol showing us the effectiveness of this model with survivors. SARSAS have produced four self-help guides for survivors, friends and families and people with learning disabilities. These are nationally acclaimed by Rape Crisis Organisations and partners across the UK and are now translated into four other languages. We are developing a new service in 2018, following research by Bristol University, helping survivors find their own sense of social justice, using solution focussed therapy and action planning. Training for change, campaigning, raising awareness, ensuring survivors rights and voices are heard is the second main strand of our work alongside our specialist services. For example; we are currently working alongside Navy Welfare and developing resources to increase awareness and improve pathways for personnel and their families. We challenge myths and victim blaming and have developed three significant awareness campaigns: It s never too late to talk supports anyone who has undergone abuse at any stage of life. Pause,Play,Stop; Sexual Consent, Do you get it? 1 in 5 raising awareness of the scale of sexual violence and showing the importance of not being bystanders and standing alongside survivors. We developed the Survivor Pathway website to ensure all concerned and caring others, know what steps to take if someone discloses sexual violence at any time and any age. We are working in partnership with Navy Welfare to develop resources raising awareness and improving pathways for all personnel and their families. Please see the SARSAS website for further information about all our work

Staff Team and Governance SARSAS employs and supports a highly skilled, committed and passionate team of women to deliver services. The Management and Co-Ordination Team is line managed by the CEO and was established to support the CEO in the day-to-day operations of the organisation. This comprises the Training and Information Officer, two Service Delivery Managers, the Volunteer Manager and the Finance Manager. In October 2017 a new Fundraising and Events Manager also joined the team. Three administrators work from the Bristol and Taunton offices and we have fifteen women in the therapeutic team including specialist support workers and counsellors. We also employ external sessional supervisors for all staff. Our volunteer manager leads an exceptional team of women who give their time voluntarily. We have over 40 volunteers involved in the helpline, one to one support, administration and fundraising. All come from a variety of backgrounds including survivors, students, lawyers, primary and secondary health practitioners, psychologists and support workers from partner organisations. We encourage survivors who feel ready to support others and welcome all women to play a supportive role standing alongside survivors, offering information, support or raising awareness. A strong, supportive and dynamic Board of Trustees with a wide range of skills including fundraising, business development, marketing, workforce development and management work closely with the CEO and meet bi monthly in Bristol. We also have a Clerk to the Board of Trustees who maintains accurate records, organises Board meetings and advises on good practice around Governance. Further Information We welcome any enquiries you have. If you have any questions and would like to speak to someone about this role, please contact Rowan Miller
