3 The UK SMART Recovery Partnership Scheme What is SMART Recovery? SMART Recovery uses psychotherapeutic techniques that are similar to those used in the majority of treatment services in the UK. This similarity helps SMART Recovery meetings sit comfortably alongside the treatment system and makes the transition from being a client to mutual-aid participant a natural and coherent step. SMART Recovery offers the benefit of mutual-aid, but can be actively encouraged or supported by treatment providers and commissioners. Through this Partnership model, Partners can extend access to mutual-aid alongside existing treatment interventions including OST and harm reduction. The network of peer-led SMART Recovery meetings provides a through-care / after-care option for the long-term support after treatment completion, reinforcing and sustaining treatment gains. One way for SMART Recovery to spread is the organic growth of meeting members training as Facilitators and then starting their own meetings. Our Partnership scheme complements this approach and makes sure that service users are exposed to SMART Recovery during their treatment journey. Why Partner with UK SMART Recovery? It is now a well-known fact within Alcohol and Drugs Treatment Services that - engagement with mutual-aid improves the long-term prognosis for addictive disorders however; despite the previous prominence of 12-step Fellowship approaches, this aspect of mutual-aid is neither appealing nor acceptable to everyone who may benefit. There was and is a requirement for an alternative. UK SMART Recovery provides that alternative. What are the Intended Outcomes? A vibrant and sustainable network of peer-led SMART Recovery meetings in the local community. Improved rates of sustained recovery for people with addictions by increasing early engagement with mutual-aid, strengthening the psycho-social interventions and recovery focus of your service and after-care capacity. Page 3 of 9

4 Key Points SMART Recovery is 100% consistent with the new drugs strategy and is an ideal vehicle to improve the recovery orientation of treatment, due to its acceptability to providers and service users, coherence and evidence base. With the majority of existing UK mutual-aid being based on the 12-step model, there is an urgent need for alternatives. SMART Recovery is the only national network of non-12-step mutual-aid meetings that is available now and growing rapidly. Our Partnership approach trains Champions i (equivalent to Therapeutic Recovery Champions within the drugs strategy) within treatment services using our cost effective and scalable online training platform. These Champions introduce SMART Recovery within their services and kick start meetings. Over time they identify service users to undertake the Facilitator training course and in turn spread meetings across the area. Partnership sites are also able to make use of SMART Recovery tools and materials to enhance the psychotherapeutic aspects of their treatment programme. The partnership scheme is based on a positively evaluated Government Pilot scheme ii. SMART Recovery co-exists comfortably with the existing 12-step fellowships and many people attend meetings from both traditions. Partnership Conditions Two members of staff per site (more at a small additional cost) train as SMART Recovery Champions, by using our online learning programme (approx. 20hrs) or, participating in one of our two-day Champion/Facilitator courses iii. Additional members of staff can undertake the first half of the online training Getting SMART to help embed understanding of SMART into your service. Champions can then kick start SMART Recovery meetings within the service, seeking to identify service users to co-facilitate and in time train up as Facilitators themselves. These peer Facilitators are then encouraged to set up new meetings in the local community. The site can then use SMART Recovery materials and manuals within your programmes, including sessions that are not peer-led SMART Recovery meetings. This includes for example using the handouts and tools within one to one counselling sessions. Page 4 of 9

5 With agreement of UKSR, partners are able to display the SMART Recovery Partner logo on their website or other promotional materials. UKSR will list your organisation as a partner on our own website. Organisations may also include mention of their status as a UK SMART Recovery Partner within funding applications using standard wording supplied by or otherwise agreed with UKSR. The partner agency/organisation must; (1) actively promote free standing peer-led meetings in their local areas, (2) sign a formal legally binding written agreement and (3) pay a small annual license fee (see current tariff). It should be noted that, as a not for profit organisation, UKSR utilises this income solely to support the ongoing development of the SMART Recovery programme, replace and invest in new materials and further the growth of the mutual-aid meetings network across the UKwide Recovery Community. 9 More Information Further information about the scheme, or advice about implementing and participating in the UKSR Partnership Scheme can be obtained from any of our National Co-ordinators or by contacting the Central Office. National Co-ordinators England Dave Hasney England Carl Zuccaro Scotland Trish Allan Wales Leigh Proctor Central Office details Thérèse Davall, Business Manager, UK SMART Recovery, Dresden House, The Strand, Stoke on Trent, ST3 2QH Thank you for your interest. i Separate documentation and guidance is available for SMART Champions working within partnerships. ii From 2008 to 2010, the Department of Health funded an evaluation of the partnership approach between Alcohol Treatment providers and SMART Recovery. The pilot was for just six sites, though strongly influenced the national partnership scheme that was launched in Much has changed since the report was written, so some things that were true then have developed and/or changed. For example, the UK and US Board of Trustees have now decided that training is mandatory (see below), organisations should not be running meetings prior to completion of the authorised training provided by UKSR. There are some other developments however; the report remains an interesting read. A copy of that evaluation report can be found HERE. iii Since the conception of the SMART Recovery Partnerships Scheme in the United Kingdom, UKSR are now in a position to additionally deliver the required learning in face-to-face training sessions for partners (when and where applicable). NB. This is not an additional requirement to the on-line training. It does however provide a more interactive opportunity to assimilate the required knowledge. This option unfortunately necessitates an additional cost to partners (please see current tariff). Page 9 of 9
