4 WALK TO END ALZHEIMER S COMPANY TEAM CAPTAIN GUIDE 3 I. Welcome to the Alzheimer s Association Walk to End Alzheimer s, the nation s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer s care, support and research. Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, this inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to reclaim the future for millions. Together, we can end Alzheimer s disease, the nation s sixth-leading cause of death. Thank you for registering as a Company Team Captain. We value your leadership in this unique role, as company participation is essential to the success of Walk. In this role, you can be a powerful force in the fight to end Alzheimer s disease. The end of Alzheimer s disease starts with you! When you participate in Walk, you are not only helping to raise critical funds to fuel our mission, you are also working to change the level of awareness in your community. At a Walk event, your company team can demonstrate team spirit, celebrate your fundraising success and learn more about Alzheimer s disease and the support programs and services offered by your local chapter. You will also have unique opportunities to get involved with the cause through advocacy initiatives and clinical trial enrollment. Walk to End Alzheimer s creates a unique opportunity for participants to personally connect with the Association and a community of people fighting Alzheimer s. As a Company Team Captain, you will have an opportunity to: Establish/strengthen a relationship with the Alzheimer s Association. To find your local chapter, visit alz.org/findus. Contribute personally to your Walk fundraising efforts. Recruit others to join you in support of this cause. Involve clients, family and friends. Educate others about the importance of early detection of Alzheimer s. Represent yourself and your company as a community leader. Help us move toward our vision of a world without Alzheimer s disease. This Company Team Guide focuses on the essential and proven elements of a successful Team Captain, including recruitment, fundraising, event presence and organization. To support these main functions, this guide contains instructions and tips. Together and with effective implementation of these steps we can make this year a great success.

5 WALK TO END ALZHEIMER S COMPANY TEAM CAPTAIN GUIDE 4 II. about the alzheimer s association and alzheimer s disease Alzheimer s Association The Alzheimer s Association is the world s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer s care, support and research. Founded in 1980 by a group of family caregivers, the Association includes the national office in Chicago, the public policy office in Washington, D.C., and chapters in communities across the country. We deliver information, education and support for millions of individuals, caregivers and medical professionals who face dementia every day. We provide care and support across the country. We advance research seeking methods of prevention, treatment and ultimately, a cure. We advocate for the needs and rights of people facing Alzheimer s. OUR MISSION is to eliminate Alzheimer s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. OUR VISION: A world without Alzheimer s disease. About Alzheimer s disease Alzheimer s disease is a global epidemic. Worldwide, more than 35 million people are living with the disease. In the United States alone, an estimated 5.4 million people have Alzheimer s, and more than 15 million are serving as their caregivers. Alzheimer s is the only cause of death among the top 10 in the United States without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression. More information about the Alzheimer s Association and Alzheimer s disease is available at alz.org.

8 WALK TO END ALZHEIMER S COMPANY TEAM CAPTAIN GUIDE 7 IV. fundraising 1. Set a team fundraising team goal. We suggest a goal of $225/raised per team member. The majority of Walks also offer participants an official Walk T-shirt after you raise $100. National Teams, please contact your National Team Coordinator for more information on your company fundraising goals and guidelines. We encourage participants who are unable to attend a local Walk to register as a virtual walker in order to gain access to easy fundraising tools. 2. You can also your team through the Participant Center and encourage them to take advantage of the templates as well. 3. Consider friendly competition between team members and departments. Set weekly or monthly goals for everyone to beat, offer prizes/ incentives and recognize members successes. Most programs give you the ability to create your own signature at the bottom of each message. This is a great way to let both personal and business contacts know that you are walking. Add a link to your Walk page and you may be surprised at the number of people who end up donating. Ask your boss to donate a free day off for the top fundraiser on your team, or something meaningful to employees. Host a morning coffee cart or afternoon snack cart. Sell candy, chips, popcorn, soda, bagels or donuts at the office and wheel them around the office on a mail cart. You may be able to get the goods donated so everything goes to your fundraising. 4. Regularly communicate with your team members, provide updates and highlights, and encourage them with fundraising options. Consider using , voic and face-toface gatherings. TIP Invite your colleagues to send in their personal stories to highlight why they Walk. Employees may be more inclined to donate or form a team to show their support for another colleague.
