ZDF Hear me out! Script with time codes ENGLISH MEETING OF TV YOUTH PROGRAMME EXPERTS Kevin: Hear me out! 10:00:15:00 10:00:49:00 Kevin (on): This is my cat Minka. She is a little runaway. I like animals because some people never hear me out when I stutter but my Minka always does. 10:00:49:00 10:00:55:00 Insert: Hear me out! 10:00:58:00 10:01:10:00 Kevin(off): The sentences don t stutter in my head but when they leave my mouth then they do. 10:01:10:00 10:01:21:00 Kevin (on): For me stuttering is connected with worries and stress. It s just stupid not nice at all. 10:01:23:00 10:01:26:00 Kevin (on): For each day a pair of socks. 10:01:27:00 10:01:39:00 Kevin (off): I am packing now because in two days a course begins where I will learn how to overcome the stuttering. 10:01:40:00 10:01:53:00 Kevin (on): That would be a big change, because nobody would make fun of me anymore. 10:01:57:00 10:02:08:00 Kevin (off): My first day at school was embarrassing because everybody found out about the stuttering. 10:02:09:00 10:02:35:00 I changed school twice. I had many bad experiences like people laughing at me. Then you feel bad because you think that you did something wrong though you haven t done anything wrong it s just the way it is. 10:03:02:00 10:03:15:00 Kevin (off) Tobi is my best friend and I like playing soccer with him and his brother; I also played in a club. 10:03:17:00 10:03:27:00 Kevin (on): Well, my coach didn t like my stuttering and therefore he just didn t take me seriously.
10:03:27:00 10:03:35:00 Tobi (on): It just depends on if he plays well and if he can stay in the team, but not if he stutters. 10:03:36:00 10:03:49:00 Kevin (on): Well I actually left voluntarily. 10:03:49:00 10:03:54:00 Tobi (on): Yes, but if they hadn t treated you like that, you would have probably stayed, wouldn t you? 10:03:56:00 10:04:14:00 Kevin (on): As soon as the others start laughing, you just want to disappear from the spot so quickly, to some place where you can be alone... that s where you want to be then. 10:04:36:00 10:04:47:00 Kevin (off): Well, my hope about the course is that the stuttering will disappear and I can talk fluently afterwards. 10:04:52:00 10:04:57:00 Kevin (on): I can t imagine living with it in the long run 10:05:08:00 10:05:10:00.because it s just stupid. 10:05:12:00 10:05:37:00 The funny attitudes are just a façade, nobody really cares at all. If you can t talk, you re a piece of dirt, and that s the way you re treated, at school, everywhere 10:05:57:00 10:06:22:00 Kevin (off): We re now on our way to the course. Kevin (on): If it doesn t work I would be really disappointed, because it s the last chance to get rid of the stuttering. 10:06:29:00 10:06:40 DelFerro (on): So you re Kevin? I m Ingrid DelFerro, welcome! So you want to put an end to your stuttering problem today? 10:06:41:00 10:06:42:00 Kevin (on): Well, yes actually. 10:06:42:00 10:06:43:00 Del Ferro (on): And why? 10:06:44:00 10:06:45:00 Kevin (on) (on): Because it gets on my nerves! 10:06:46:00 10:06:47:00 DelFerro (on): That s a good reason!
10:06:50:00 10:07:06:00 DelFerro (on): When people stutter their diaphragm trembles, for example they go like this: I work for the DelFerro I I I I I I Institute. 10:07:07:00 10:07:17:00 Assistant Anika (on): While speaking you have to remember to really press your ribs together, from the first to the last letter. 10:07:19:00 10:07:21:00 DelFerro (on): One, two... my name is 10:07:21:00 10:07:22:00 Kevin (on): Kevin Piwonka. 10:07:25:00 10:07:32:00 DelFerro (on): No, not like that. Speak normally. You press your hands together. Like this: take a breath, one, two 10:07:33:00 10:07:39:00 Kevin (on): My name is Kevin Piwonka, I m 13 years old and live in Cainsdorf. 10:07:39:00 10:07:42:00 DelFerro (on): Can you breathe? Breathe out! Breathe out! 10:07:43:00-10:07:44:00 Kevin (on): There was no breath left! 10:07:44:00-10:08:00:00 DelFerro (on): But I don t want you to complain about it all the time. I want you to work, and not say Oh how hard this is. To stutter your whole life is much harder. This here is top-sports! You want to reach your goal? You really want to be an exstutterer? 10:08:00:00 Kevin (on): Yes! 10:08:1:00 10:08:03:00 DelFerro (on): Ok, then you have to fight like a tiger. 10:08:04:00-10:08:15:00 Kevin (off): When she told me not to complain I didn t really understand her, because I wasn t actually complaining. 10:08:16:00 10:08:22:00 Kevin (off): I had imagined it would work a little more fluently with the method.. 10:08:23:00 10:08:25:00 I m a little disappointed, yes. 10:08:27:00 10:08:34:00 I think I still have a lot of work to do after the first day.
10:08:35:00 10:08:59:00 Mother (on): These are two to three really hard days for you, in which your diaphragm has to adapt, but you have to go through this. And I know it s exhausting and that you feel strange doing this. It s a big change, but once you ve managed, then you made it. And we have only the ten days one of them is gone already. 10:09:16:00 10:09:30:00 Kevin (off): I felt pretty bad, when the method didn t work first. When my parents started getting on my nerves, saying I should use the method, I never thought about giving up 10:09:30:00 10:09:39:00 Kevin (on): I really wanted to make it (3x) 10:09:43:00 10:10:00:00 Kevin (off): During the first three days we pressed the diaphragm up with our own force, so it goes up smoothly. Now we just imagine the diaphragm. We imagine an arch, and take it up with our hand. 10:10:05:00 10:10:08:00 Guy (on): Kevin, now you can ask all the girls for their phone numbers. 10:10:09:00 10:10:12:00 Kevin (on): All the pretty girls... 10:10:15:00 10:10: 17:00 Kevin (on): Yeah, I m the one to tease here. 10:10:18:00 10:10:27:00 Kevin (off): Today is a challenge day. We re picking situations in which stuttering was always very embarrassing, to train them. 10:10:36:00 10:10:39:00 Kevin (on): Could I get your telephone number? Women: No way! 10:10:42:00 10:10:45:00 Kevin (on): Are you crazy? The boy-friend is right there. Guy (on): That s her father. 10:10:49:00 Woman (on): No speak German! 10:10:59:00 10:11:29:00 Kevin (on): Hello, what s your name? Woman (on): Annemarie! Kevin (on): Could I get your phone number? Woman (on): Uum, no!
Kevin (on): Well, I m here in Olsberg because I want to get rid of my stuttering and because I found this was a challenge, I have to ask people for their phone number. Woman (on): Ah, ok, not bad. Good luck! Kevin (on): Thanks, bye! 10:11:37:00 10:12:00:00 Kevin (off): Well, I needed a lot of courage to talk to these people. As I was nervous I still stuttered sometimes, but I think it s normal because it s very embarrassing for me to ask pretty women for their phone numbers, that was really embarrassing. 10:12:05:00 10:12:13:00 Kevin (off): Today is the last day of the course. I am stuttering extremely less by now. 10:12:13:00 10:12:23:00 DelFerro (on): If he was consistent I want to see the thumb up, almost consistent to the side, and if he wasn t consistent at all, thumb down. 10:12:24:00 10:12:31:00 Kevin (off) The most difficult thing for me was to consistently speak according to the method, because you need more time to speak. 10:12:32:00 10:12:47:00 DelFerro (on): How do you feel now? Kevin (on): I feel just great! DelFerro (on): And what do you say if someone doesn t have the time to listen? Kevin (on): Then that s tough luck for him! DelFerro (on): Exactly! 10:12:54:00 10:13:01:00 Kevin (off): That was the first time for me with so many other stutterers. That was nice because they don t make fun of you. 10:13:12:00 10:13:23:00 Kevin (on): I haven t made it yet, but I m really happy and everything s going to work. Mother (on): We re very proud of you and you ll make it. 10:13:31:00-10:13:41:00 Kevin (off): What I like about motorcyles is that they have a lot of power. That you can control it. 10:13:41:00 10:13:49:00 Kevin (on): Well, my goal is to control the stuttering just like a motorcycle. 10:13:49:00 10:14:14:00 Mother (on): You ll stop stuttering, use that method and overcome it, because we know you can do it. And once you ve succeeded... Kevin (on): Say it Mother (on): we ll think about buying you that motorcycle... Kevin (on): Come on, what s the deal? Mother (on):...then we ll buy that motorcycle.
Kevin (0n): Yeah! Is that on tape? Mother (on): But you really have to make it. 10:14:16:00 10:14:26:00 Kevin (off): Now it s definitely better. As long as I use the method, I can talk fluently. I know for sure I can make it.
