WEBER WARRIOR STRONG COALITION Goals and Objectives Weber Warrior Strong Coalition is implementing the CTC process to achieve the community s vision that all young people in Weber Cone grow up supported and nurtured by their families, schools and community, and become healthy adults who contribute positively to society. Goal: Reduce substance use and suicide among the youth in the Weber Cone Weber Warrior Strong Coalition Accomplishments to Date Identified a champion to guide the process Inventory of existing community services addressing youth and family issues Identified a lead agency committed to supporting the project Developed roster of Key Leaders to be involved in the process Prepared initial work plan and timeline for getting started The problem in our community We know about the youth in our community from the SHARP survey. From , 12th graders in our community have reported a 55% increase in alcohol use, 37% increase in marijuana use, 807% increase in e-cigarette use, and 142% more youth reporting high need for mental health treatment. Next Steps Hold a Key Leader Orientation Hire a coalition coordinator to facilitate all coalition activities and goals Obtain memorandums of understanding from Key Leaders Invite and engage a diverse group of community representatives to participate on the Community Board

Why does our area want a Coalition? Because we can make the world better! Image by Jolaine P. Garner

WE NEED A system that actively engages in local community processes, educates and motivates key leaders, promotes and establishes prevention policy, and coordinates a well planned prevention effort in every community.

Coalition a formal arrangement for cooperation and collaboration between groups or sectors of a community, in which each group retains its identity but all agree to work together toward a common goal of building a safe, healthy, and drug free community.

Youth Parents Education Substance Abuse Organizations Business Volunteer Organizations Director and/or Coordinator Healthcare Professionals Government Law Enforcement Media Faith-Based Organizations Youth Serving Organizations

Accomplishments so far Champion identified Inventory of community services addressing youth and family issues Identified a lead agency committed to supporting the project Roster of Key Leaders Initial work plan and timeline for getting started

Strategic Prevention Framework(SPF) aka PUBLIC HEALTH MODEL

Communities that Care+

Reduce Problem Behavior Substance Abuse, Delinquency, Teen pregnancy, School Dropout, Violence, Depression & Anxiety CTC FRAMEWORK By Reducing Risk Factors and Increasing Protective Factors SPF/Public Health And Employ evidence based practices that are designed to decrease prioritized risk factors and increase targeted protective factors CONSEQUENCE DATA CONSUMPTION INDICATORS RISK FACTORS STRATEGIES

BOTTOM LINE CTC+ is a tool that can be used to complete the Public Health process (Collective Impact) CTC+ has a strong emphasis on local control and multiple agencies Videos, guidance documents There is support for communities to use CTC+!

What resources exist? Contract with Experts on CTC+ Coaches statewide Regional Directors Matching funds for community coordinators

How long does this all take?

But really How long?

Barriers Consistent community involvement personalities Need a coordinator (not me) Hesitation to use the model Don t fully understand CTC+ Need something now City support (all cities) Believe that cities are unsure what role they play in the coalition process

People leave. Funding changes Policies change Coalitions are fluid just like Public Health What do we do to address this?

So what is the ask? City leaders involved on a regular basis Key Leader Board (Mayor, City council), once a quarter Community Board (Police, Community Events) once a month. Dollars/Funding Tooele City has a fully funded full time prevention coordinator. Brigham City had a fully funded full time prevention coordinator. (staff turn over)

Vision To foster an inclusive community that is informed, caring and driven to ensure youth wellbeing.

Vision To foster an inclusive community that is informed, caring and driven to ensure youth wellbeing. New Member Packet I chose to be on this council because it seemed interesting and I have never been a part of something like this. This council is different because you get to express yourself.
