2 Youth Mental Health First Aid Youth Mental Health First Aid Training program launched by SCOE in 2014 Partnership of SCOE, Sacramento County Behavioral Health Services, and 9 School Districts in Sacramento County Supported by Sacramento County MHSA Workforce Education and Training (WET) funds Purpose: to educate teachers, school staff, caregivers and other caring adults on how to help adolescents ages who are experiencing mental health challenges or crisis 4 2

3 Program Goals The overarching program goals are: Increase the number of diverse, qualified individuals who have the skills and knowledge to recognize youth mental health or addiction challenges and/or crisis Reduce stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness or addiction Improve attitudes leading to social distance from individuals with mental health problems Increase access to mental health care in the community 5 Youth Mental Health First Aid Curriculum Participants learn: The risk factors and warning signs for a range of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents, including: depression, anxiety, psychosis, eating disorders, AD/HD, disruptive behavior disorders and substance use disorders Assess for risk of suicide or harm Listen nonjudgmentally Give reassurance and information Encourage appropriate professional help Encourage self-help and other support strategies Participants do not learn: To diagnose, nor how to provide any therapy or counseling 6 3

4 Countywide Progress 46 educators, school staff, community based organization staff and youth-serving law enforcement officers completed the Training of Trainers during and Certified Instructors conducted 39 YMHFA trainings for 713 district, school site, parents and community members between February 2014 and June Youth Mental Health First Aid Project Findings 98% of YMHFA course participants agree that the training made them more aware of their own views and feelings about mental health problems and disorders 97% of participants agreed that they could assist a young person or listen to them with compassion if they were experiencing a mental health crisis 97% of participants felt they could reach out to a person in crisis and either assist or direct them to appropriate services Overall, adults who participated in the trainings, either as course instructors or as YMHFA course participants, were grateful for the learning experience and were better equipped to help youth in crisis 8 4

5 Countywide Bullying Prevention Program Why Bullying Prevention? Children Who Are Bullied May Experience: Mental Health Consequences: Lower self-esteem, greater loneliness, greater anxiety, more depression Increased risk for suicide; the more types of bullying experienced, the greater the risk Physical Health Consequences: Headaches, backaches, stomach pain, sleep problems, poor appetite, bed-wetting Academic Consequences: Avoiding going to school, lower academic achievement Adult Psychiatric Disorders: Higher chance of having agoraphobia, anxiety and panic disorders 10 5

6 Bullying Prevention Program Launched in Fall 2011 as the first project of the Student Mental Health and Wellness Plan Partnership of SCOE, Sacramento County Behavioral Health Services, and all 13 School Districts in Sacramento County Supported by Sacramento County MHSA Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) funds Currently serving grades K 12, dependent upon the district 11 Program Overview Purpose of Project is to develop the capacity of districts to implement sustainable bullying prevention programs and strategies, as well as provide bullying prevention training to County staff who work with youth. Evidence-based bullying prevention programs Annual Administrator Update trainings Annual MH/AOD Staff trainings Demonstration schools sites and infrastructure to support expansion District Activities include: Board policy changes/revisions to specifically address bullying All-staff training Curriculum training Second Step, Steps to Respect, Olweus Classroom instruction and schoolwide events Parent & Community education and awareness 12 6

7 Project Implementation Progress In the Fall of 2011, 13 districts began implementing bullying prevention activities at 24 demonstration sites throughout the County By June 30, 2016, bullying prevention activities had expanded to include 68 school sites throughout the County 13 From July 1, 2011 to June 30, ,715 administrators, teachers and school staff trained 26,737 parents/community members attended prevention education & awareness events 206,433 students received direct service 14 7

8 Bullying Prevention Project Findings As compared to the baseline data collected in Fall 2011 for beliefs about the year, the Spring 2016 data showed significant improvements as follows: An increase in student initiated prevention activities An increase in staff initiated prevention activities An increase in overall school commitment A decrease in the prevalence of bullying incidents 15 Students Solutions for Bullying as an adult: If I were an adult, I would call home. I would mostly try to talk to the bully because they re probably going through something at school or even home. If I were an adult I wouldn t be a bystander, I would be an upstander. I would go over there and tell the bully to stop bullying. as a student: I will put up posters. I will help out. I will stand up. I will speak out. I will be kind! To stop bullying, students can get in a program kind of like the one we have called Dragon Brigade. They go around the school and problem solve and stop bullying when it happens. 16 8
